Subject: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 12 Jan 09 - 12:22 AM Headsup for all Richard Thompson completists! Being a bit of an insomniniac, I have just stumbled across a half hour interview with Mr Thompson. (0430!) It appeared on the BBCs NEWS channel, as an edition of their programme Hard Talk. (normally a one-on-one i/view with a political slant). It was a pleasant surprise to find Mr T there!. Obviously not an in depth trawl through Richards life, but, an interesting vignette, nonetheless. (The idea of the Incredible String Band on X Factor, sort of appealed!). Listings for BBC NEWS are notoriously absent, but looking at previous days editions, I'm guessing that it might be repeated at 2330 UK time, tonight Monday 12th Jan.(but don't hold me too it!). Just the thing with your late night cup of Horlicks!. He plays a bit too.. Probably not available for US Viewers, Blame the Beeb. It's worth a look anyway. (He also talks about Morris dancing in a positive way!) Have a good day each and everyone Ralphie |

Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: smurf Date: 12 Jan 09 - 04:55 AM It's on the BBC iplayer click here |
Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: Will Fly Date: 12 Jan 09 - 04:55 AM Available on the BBC's iPlayer at: Hard Talk. Close your eyes to the opening graphics sequence - the like of which was parodied by Chris Morris in "Brass Eye"... |
Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 12 Jan 09 - 05:16 AM Yes indeed, but If you're a sad anorak like me, your little pinky will be poised over the record button on the video tonight...Sad or What!!!!LOL! Looking again, Yep, certainly a Brass Eye connection. I wonder, does Mr T take "Cake?" |
Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: Will Fly Date: 12 Jan 09 - 05:21 AM D'you know, I can't remember if Chris Morris's graphics sequence parody wasn't in another programme, and not "Brass Eye". COuld it have been "The Day Today"? |
Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: Will Fly Date: 12 Jan 09 - 05:25 AM Forgot to say: Isn't it the way that the interviewers in these sessions are always fore-armed with the most obvious questions? I know that they have to bring the subject of the interview into the general view, but there's never any subtlety or more in-depth questioning. RT seemed to handle it all fairly coolly - I suppose he must be used to it by now... |
Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: Rasener Date: 12 Jan 09 - 05:38 AM Scunthorpe or Sleaford not romantic indeed Hrummmp. Just gone off him and he better not set foot in Lincolnshire (Probably wouldn't anyway). Seems like he loves Morris Dancing! |
Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: Rasener Date: 12 Jan 09 - 05:41 AM Is he a friend of Martin Simpson? |
Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: Will Fly Date: 12 Jan 09 - 05:45 AM My first girlfriend (we were both aged 9) was from Scunthorpe. We met in a Blackpool boarding house in 1953, and it was love at first sight. Didn't last long, though, but there's probably still some romance in Scunthorpe. Don't know Sleaford. If RT does ever make it to Lincolnshire, mug him and take his Lowden guitar away from him - I could do with it. |
Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: Rasener Date: 12 Jan 09 - 12:07 PM So could a few others :-) |
Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 12 Jan 09 - 01:10 PM Ah....I've actually played it! (well for about 5 seconds, and then got soundly thumped!!). Yes Will, It was The Day Today! I once went out with a girl from Lincolnshire, but, it all went a bit flat..... |
Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: Pistachio Date: 12 Jan 09 - 01:26 PM Thanks for that link. Quick fire 'expected' questions but loads of subjects covered. I believe that as RT said Folk songs are sung right to the heart of the listener/audience. Many singers don't do more than recite the words. We deliver the feelings and create the atmosphere. PS Villan, I'll be in Lincolnshire soon enough! H.x |

Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: Surreysinger Date: 12 Jan 09 - 07:35 PM Thanks for the heads up Ralphie. Unfortunately I didn't get to see the message until the witching hour of 1200 ... too late, but did get to look at it on the iplayer. Having looked at Hard Talk's page on the Beeb website, it looks as though it would have been repeated quite a few times .... "HARDtalk is broadcast on the BBC World News channel Monday to Thursday at the following times (all GMT): 0430, 0930, 1430, 1830 , 2130 and 2330 (please note regional times may vary" ... but it looks as though it is the one interview per day, so no chance to record it now, more's the pity. |

Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: G-Force Date: 13 Jan 09 - 09:05 AM It wasn't on. I even checked on the Electronic Program Guide, set the video and went to bed. On the tape was a load of waffle about Gaza (very important in it's own little way, but there's quite enough of that at the moment but precious little RT). |
Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: The Borchester Echo Date: 13 Jan 09 - 09:12 AM Still on iPlayer |
Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: pavane Date: 13 Jan 09 - 09:15 AM On BBC world, which is all I can get here, they seem to repeat the same HARDTALK several times. I have certainly seen the one on GAZA all over the weekend. |
Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: pavane Date: 14 Jan 09 - 04:16 AM And Richard Thompson was on three times last night. |
Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: G-Force Date: 14 Jan 09 - 09:14 AM Yes, everything comes to those who wait. I finally saw it last night. I thought the interviewer was in the usual impossible position of not wanting to seem too clueless (thus annoying the guest) and not wanting to have too much specialised knowledge (thus leaving the audience behind). I thought RT kept things on course beautifully. |
Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: GUEST, topsie Date: 15 Jan 09 - 02:30 PM I have to admire him for remaining calm and civil when asked about: "morris dancing - there's a big debate at the moment about this tradition of dancing around a maypole with a kind of piped music ..." |
Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: George Papavgeris Date: 15 Jan 09 - 03:05 PM He was erudite, polite (when asked stupid questions), contrite (rather than bragging about his status when prompted), and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to him. Which is a perfect intro for seeing him this Monday at the Swan theatre in High Wycombe, talking and performing on the theme of "1000 years of songwriting". Can't wait... |
Subject: RE: Richard Thompson on BBC TV (Mon 12th) From: Will Fly Date: 15 Jan 09 - 05:24 PM George - enjoy his show. I saw "1,000 years of popular song" first time round, at Sadlers Wells, and it was really excellent. He is a stunning performer. |
