Why am I so desperate?

Because on the day my Myspace friends over in New Jersey were trying to struggle through the sixth anniversary of their beloved only child's tragic death at the hands of a drunk driver, I was wanting to play Kate's beautiful 'Underneath the Stars' for them, because that song means an incredble amount to them. And if you read my blog about their son, Peter, called 'In The Footprints of a Boy called Peter' you'll understand why.

I guess it's a sort of 'reaching out across the ocean', in that Charlie and Gloria would see that come up on their screen, and they'd know what it meant, how I was feeling, that I was 'with them' as close as I was able to be.

And THAT is the power of Myspace, to reach out and touch people with the beautiful music of so many musicians who lie within it. Kate is one of those musicians, and I'll never forget what happened whilst I was sat at the computer that night, listening to her song, over and over...and neither will Gloria and Charlie...and you know something, neither will their dear son.

Thank you, Bonnie. :0)

I remember hearing her sing this song at the Sidmouth, a few years back..She held her audience in her gentle hands that night, literally 'underneath the stars'....Little did I know then what significance that song would come to have for me, and for these two, broken people across the ocean.

Kate's song has helped, just a little, to set them back on the road to healing. It was one of the most extraordinary experiences I've ever encounterd...I sent them her CD, so they play it often, but I know that they also love to play it on their pages at 'special' times, because in a way, it brings their son just that little closer to them.

Hopefully, Kate's page will come back to Myspace soon. Fingers crossed.

Thank you again though, I'm sitting here listening and watching, as I write this.

If they like Kate so much perhaps they should, if they want to (not because you think it will do them good), buy a CD.

I also find arrogant your implication that Kate Rusby, or any artist, has some sort of obligation to post an any website let alone one of your choosing.

Your myspace has more than enough self-serving, self-indulgent preaching about too many topics you think we should all "care" about. Your public hand-wringing says more about you than any cause you profess to support; you are like a grief tourist who puts teddy bears by the roadside where a child they did not know, and would not otherwise care about, was run down and killed.

'Myspace

Thanks to people who dropped us a line.
The Myspace page seems to have been scrambled! We are trying to get to the bottom of it now and will endeavour to get it back up there asap.'

Technical problems of that sort happen all the time.

There are thousands of good musicians out there; there are thousands of good songwriters also - most unsung and unsigned and struggling with their websites. A few of them have been put on pedestals, it seems and have been turned into little tin gods whose CDs every folkie worth his salt "must have". Does it really matter in the scheme of things if Rusby's site exists or not? She was in the right place at the right time; knew the right people probably, and now is getting the star treatment. Most of us out here cannot even experience the courtesy of being listened to -and its not for want of talent or perseverence. Instead, we headbang our way around the clubs whilst having paeons of praise about people like Rusby rammed down our throats everywhere we go. She and her ilk are no better as singers and songwriters than many of the unknown floorsingers in countless folk clubs worldwide.
It's sadly unfortunate that the timing of this thread coincided with Lizzie Cornish's anniversary of that poor boy (therefore she thinks I'm bitter). Most of us have something in life which makes us feel like this; sometimes it's circumstantial; sometimes it's taught by Masters.

Lizzie and Nager - did you not notice that I was describing a situation shared by a great many people, I am not a lone voice here! This is not a personal attack on any individual performer, just a way of explaining that we have faith in our own music without having to grovel at other people's altars.
Sandbell is my nickname, and Ed's clever - credit me with more intelligence than to print out my website for all and sundry to see. That really would open the floodgates to the slings and arrows of irate Rusby worshippers with their preconceived notions of what I must be like! You may discover it on your web-travels one day, but as I have not been hyped by the "Establishment", you will no doubt pass it by.

How sad that people, including folkies, have to have heroes.

I've heard KR on BBC folk programmes, along with many others who they want us to look up to. I've thought; fine, a distinctive voice.

But a number of singers locally have distinctive voices. I was in a room full of distinctive and unique singers tonight who deserve to be heard on the same platforms as the hyped favourites. And at least six were songrwiters as good as any you'll hear at a folk festival or on any folkie CD, bar a tiny number of truly great folk songwriters.

Why should I have to suffer sycophantic dribble from media sources and media indoctrinated saddoes about how marvelous one particular singer is when I know hundreds, perhaps thousands of singers who are equally distinctive.

Here's the key bit - I've nothing against those who are famous who, like KR, have genuine talent - (and those with barely adequate talent who are unjustly parachuted in to fame over the heads of the talented people without contacts/the right sort of Daddy etc.? That's different).

Indeed KR's name could be supplanted by any other hyped folk star and the point would remain the same. There is a wealth of talent in our domestic folk scene but theres a media (commecial and club organizer sectors included) telling us that those they have booked to perform are somehow the best - and all the rest of us are rubbish - fit only to serve as bums on seats.

There's nothing new in this of course - showbiz has been pulling the same old money spinning stunt for centuries. But its incredibly sad to see good singers and songwriters I know talking themselves down, whilst looking up to people that are no better than themselves; purely because some promoter or bunch of pricks running a folk club have manufactured a lucrative pecking order from that huge pool of people of equal worth.
But isn't that what "hype" all about?

Ian, I agree with most of what you say above, not just about KR and "famous" people like her but even at a local level with folk festivals and clubs etc where the "in" people get all the spots, not on talent but because they know the right people. It's the old saying "not what you know but who you know". Sadly that's life!
Sandbell, I happen to like Kate's voice and choice of songs etc but I certainly don't "grovel" at anyone's feet, neither am I an "irate Rusby worshipper." Nor do I throw "slings and arrows" at people.
To say that we would not listen to your music because it has not been "hyped" by the media is so so wrong. I spend much of my listening time hearing people most have never read about, let alone been "hyped". And much of that music I thoroughly enjoy. I'd maybe like yours too.

Chicken, Sandbell... :0)

Oh for goodness sake, yes...there are loads of people who don't make it, and that doesn't mean they're not good, although...sometimes it does, I'm afraid.

But there's nowt wrong with singing someone's praises either!

So, Ian, may I suggest that you start doing just that, and bring out the names of the people whose music and singing you love, so that we can all share. That way, they get mentioned, and who knows where it may lead.

In the meantime, I'm perfectly happy with talking about Kate and all the other people whose music I love. It does not mean I go to bed in Kate Rusby Pyjamas, it simply means I really like her music, and I'm glad to have found it.

Still no myspace though..   :0(

And there are some in the folk world who so often appear too darn keen on putting down anyone who makes it, or who has a humungous amount of talent.

I've never understood it, nor ever will.

Sandbell says that This is not a personal attack on any individual performer but it does seem a bit personal to me "Kate Rusby on Myspace? Now there's a waste of space! Good riddance!"

Until about 5 years ago I hadn't heard much folk music. I heard a KR track on Radio 2, bought the album liked it and bought some more. Started looking for other folk music, using forums like this to point me in many directions. Now folk is practically all I listen to, I buy more CD's than I have ever done before, go and see live music from pubs to concert hall, usually buy at least 1 cd from the artist playing. Who knows I might even see Sandbell soon and buy a CD from him.

I get a bit fed up with people knocking anyone who becomes popular. I know that major artists in the folk world (KR, Seth Lakeman, Eliza Carthy etc) with their high profile bring people into searching for more.

As I write this KR is palying on Radio 2!

I think that little green eyed monster has been at work in some of the posts on this thread. I would reckon that most of the regular festival performers have got where they are through talent, and I would say particularly so in the case of Kate Rusby.

I also think Eliza would have probably got to where she is without her dad's name, but it may have taken a bit longer perhaps?

I think the main problem among some performers is not lack of talent, but the fact that they have arrived in a comfort zone, and can come across as a bit complacent, but this is probably a result of when it becomes the "day job" - it's probably hard to keep the edge one had when one was young and up and coming.

Lizzie - thanks for the request for me to highlight singers I have time for.

One set - no problem. This group comes from artists already well known or have been during the 35 years I've known about Folk.   But it's simply my preference alongside everyone else. I'm happy to mention a few names however for the record.

These must include (of the very, very well known ones) Leon Rosselson, Dave Goulder and John Conelly (right spelling?) - all excellent songwriters as well as performers.

The next group comes from less well known guest singers I've seen in clubs over the years and would include Andy Caven and Peter Bond.

But the main group is made up of those who have no CD album released - or at least not a "commercial" one. These are people I've seen doing floor spots or guest spots as a local singer. There's little point in naming people of this group because they are below the "official" folk scene (payclub, festival or record company catalogue) radar.

The great thing here though is that there will be a similar group of undersung people in your area. It simply means taking the time to find them - difficult possibly as they may not feature at your local concert club or festival. That will often be for the same reason I'm never seen at the concert clubs in my area - we're not prepared to enter into floor singer beauty contests and probably have to pay entry fee for the dubious honour.

Digressing slightly, let's add that I have taken up invitations to do floor spots at a concert centred clubs - I've played a small number of local guest spots and two festivals - but I'm not particularly bothered about that competetive part of the folk scene. We have plenty of singers clubs in the area lucklily so no one has to beg to a local folk elite to find an audience. And I far prefer the relaxed nature of the singers clubs where no-one is trying to grap fame or make a profit or make a living

Kate Rusby on Myspace? Now there's a waste of space! Good riddance!"

I,ve been going to folk-clubs in the North-East for about thirty years and have seen some great performances from various well known and not so well known names. At some point I became involved with traditional music and made some lasting acquaintances with top class musicians. A natural progression was to write and perform my own guitar backed songs. I,m a kind person, but however many times I have listened, I have never understood a word of what KR is going on about. Lets face it, the so called duet with Ronan Keating was a cheap shot at making money from a gullible public and in my opinion, shows where this lasses priorities lie. Not for me thankyou.

I find it very sad that music, which as far as I'm concerned should be about bringing people together even if they have different perspectives and tastes, all too often seem to encourage anger & resentment. For what it's worth I prefer Kate's work with Kathryn Roberts but I quite understand that there are people who have a different opinion or view & accept that they are allowed to do so. After all we live in a world of diversity and just because people differ in their tastes to me does not mean that they are wrong or fools, it just means that we differ. I remember years ago reading a letter in Folk Roots in which someone commented about the diversity of taste within the folk world and saying that if people wanted to listen to Chinese folk music that was fine by them as long as this person didn't have to listen to me. I phoned Ian Anderson and said " About my forthcoming album of Chinese folk music...." Part of the richness of life involves generosity of spirit and a sense of humour about things.

Well Treeman and sandbell, I think it pretty poor show to be slagging off someone just because she is sucessful. She may well have had the breakes, that takes nothing away from her abilities. Kate has just about everything going for her, good looks, incredible voice, lovley guitar style and is able to write moving and very well crafted songs.

Instead of sniping, I would try to emulate if I were you.

You are welcome Guest Guest

Agree totally with Silas. If you don't like her, go and listen to somebody else who you do like and leave those who do like her to enjoy what she does.

I personally feel it is bad practice to slag a performer off publically. If there is something you don't like about a performer, get in touch with them and say what you think (that is if you are Man/Woman enough to offer your considered advice/complaint).
