Subject: Appropriate-ish quiz
From: greg stephens
Date: 26 Jan 09 - 06:34 PM

This is a quick easy coffee time quiz, though hopefully you will have to think rather than google. There is a theme. Well, actually there are two linked themes.

(This quiz has also been set on another forum. I am putting it here as well for comparison of of the different approaches of the two sites. If you have tried it elsewhere, you are honour bound not to answer here, or you will go to a very bad place)
Answers to be posted right here as you do them, to enable collaborative discussion. The stopwatch has started.

1) Likes his chocolate biscuits, not so fond of Saunders though.
2) Said "That's all right" when Aaron nicked his prize possessions.
3)Had hazy notions of location of the windy city.
4) Sang "God save the Queen", or something rather similar.
5) He bowed and scraped to Monsieur Moreau (forgot this clue initially, now reinserted)
6) Nigerian royal royal, born on a Sunday.
7) Just span for the last time(second name)
8) Last drops just ran out of the bucket
9) Famous, if unlikely,Kirkliston band .
10) Pioneered, among other things, unlikely way of taking books to school.(second name)
11) Gertie with a lucky pedal extremity.
12) Partner possibly made soap flakes?

3 Robert Johnson
4
5
6 King Sunny Ade
7 Hall(Cliff)
8
9
10 Amstrong (Louis)

Well, there are a couple of things that the answers have in common; that's what I think is the main theme. As for the subsidiary theme, here are the initials we've got so far (spacing adjusted slightly):

_ A R _ _ K   H   O _ A M _

Does that help?

Burach are not the Kirkliston band. A reasonable answer, but they are not unlikely, and do not fit the subsidiary theme. Aretha Franklin and Odetta are correct.
The subsidiary theme is not presidents.

9 Bundu Boys: correct
1 Is not Bernie Gallagher

So far:
1) Likes his chocolate biscuits, not so fond of Saunders though.
2) Arthur Crudup
3)Robert Johnson
4) Aretha Franklin
5) He bowed and scraped to Monsieur Moreau
6) King Sunny Ade
7 Hall(Cliff)Just span for the last time(second name)
8) Odetta
9) Bhundu Boys
10) Armstrong (Louis)
11) Ma Rainey
12) Partner possibly made soap flakes?

So 1, 5 and 12 still to do, I think. A statement of the subsidiary theme might help to solve the last ones. I don't think it has been mentioned yet.
Time for a few clues possibly (they needed a lot on the other site!).
My clue for 1 was challenged, on the grounds that it should have been cake not biscuit.
For 5, where might people bow and scrape, know somebody called Moreau, and fit the subsidiary theme?
12 shouldn't be difficult, how many kinds of soap flake do you know?

Nerd: quite right, Canray Fontenot.
Saunders is the correct spelling, I believe, though I have seen it spelt the other way.Have a think folks, kinds of chocolate biscuits(or are they cakes?). And as another clue, I think they originate in the country where the theme of the quiz lives, as does the answewr to the clue.

Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz

Greg,

if you mean the chicken person, it is definitely Sanders and not Saunders. Harland David Sanders was the entrepreneur and chef who founded Kentucky Fried Chicken. He was a "Kentucky Colonel," which is an honorary title given out by the state of Kentucky (sort of like a state-level knighthood!) Hence his trademarked name, Colonel Sanders.

You are unclear in your above post whether you do mean Colonel Sanders, or whether there is some other person who is really name Saunders but sometimes incorrectly called Sanders. Unless you clarify, it might be hard to guess the final clue.

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz
From: greg stephens
Date: 02 Feb 09 - 12:34 PM

OK Nerd. To clarify, here is the last clue that needs solving.

1) Likes his chocolate biscuits, not so fond of Saunders though.

It is nothing whatsover to do with Colonel Sanders or chickens in any shape or form. The chocolate biscuits(or some would say cakes) originate(I believe) in the same country as the main subject/theme of the whole quiz. By the way,I am writing in England. In America, where nomenclature is differewnt, I am not sure if the object referred to is a cake, or a cookie, or indeed something quite other.
The answer, it has been established, will be a black musician, as are all the other answers. And in this case, the black musician is not fond of Saunders.

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz
From: Nerd
Date: 02 Feb 09 - 12:56 PM

The black musician who springs to mind for number one is Bo Diddley. He was always annoyed that people said he ripped the Bo Diddley Beat off of Red Saunders's "Hambone," and claimed to have been using the beat long before Saunders's hit.

But I can't think what the biscuit/cookie/cake would be.
