Subject: Appropriate-ish quiz From: greg stephens Date: 26 Jan 09 - 06:34 PM This is a quick easy coffee time quiz, though hopefully you will have to think rather than google. There is a theme. Well, actually there are two linked themes. (This quiz has also been set on another forum. I am putting it here as well for comparison of of the different approaches of the two sites. If you have tried it elsewhere, you are honour bound not to answer here, or you will go to a very bad place) Answers to be posted right here as you do them, to enable collaborative discussion. The stopwatch has started. 1) Likes his chocolate biscuits, not so fond of Saunders though. 2) Said "That's all right" when Aaron nicked his prize possessions. 3)Had hazy notions of location of the windy city. 4) Sang "God save the Queen", or something rather similar. 5) He bowed and scraped to Monsieur Moreau (forgot this clue initially, now reinserted) 6) Nigerian royal royal, born on a Sunday. 7) Just span for the last time(second name) 8) Last drops just ran out of the bucket 9) Famous, if unlikely,Kirkliston band . 10) Pioneered, among other things, unlikely way of taking books to school.(second name) 11) Gertie with a lucky pedal extremity. 12) Partner possibly made soap flakes? |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: greg stephens Date: 27 Jan 09 - 03:35 AM Perhaps I should ahve made clear that it is the first part of the name we are looking at in each clue, unless specified otherwise. |

Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: Phil Edwards Date: 29 Jan 09 - 03:14 AM 8 is Odetta. (I think I've got both themes, but it's not helping!) |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: GUEST,Johnmc Date: 29 Jan 09 - 05:36 PM Pip, Did you read about "collaborative discussion"? Any chance of divulging a theme? |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: Phil Edwards Date: 29 Jan 09 - 05:45 PM Well, there are a couple of things that the answers have in common; that's what I think is the main theme. As for the subsidiary theme, here are the initials we've got so far (spacing adjusted slightly): _ A R _ _ K H O _ A M _ Does that help? |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: GUEST,Johnmc Date: 29 Jan 09 - 05:58 PM Great work, Pip. President Obama - gives us a start on remaining clues. Morse would be proud of you. |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: GUEST,Johnmc Date: 29 Jan 09 - 06:10 PM Burach are a group with S Brechin from Kirkliston. |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: GUEST,Johnmc Date: 29 Jan 09 - 06:16 PM Could 8 be Odetta ? |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: GUEST,Johnmc Date: 29 Jan 09 - 06:37 PM 4 Aretha? |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 30 Jan 09 - 05:06 AM Other subsidiary link (without resorting to Google) Are they all also surnames (of presidents) I recognise (Chester) Arthur, and (Lyndon B) Johnson |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: greg stephens Date: 30 Jan 09 - 06:00 AM Burach are not the Kirkliston band. A reasonable answer, but they are not unlikely, and do not fit the subsidiary theme. Aretha Franklin and Odetta are correct. The subsidiary theme is not presidents. |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: GUEST,Johnmc Date: 30 Jan 09 - 06:34 AM Apologies, Pip. I failed to notice you got there first with Odetta. Could Saunders be Jennifer? |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: GUEST,Johnmc Date: 30 Jan 09 - 07:08 AM Is 9 The Bhundu Boys |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: GUEST,Ed Date: 30 Jan 09 - 07:08 AM 1. Bhundu Boys |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: GUEST,Ed Date: 30 Jan 09 - 07:10 AM 9 even for Bhundu Boys - cross posted |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: GUEST,Johnmc Date: 30 Jan 09 - 07:51 AM Could 1 be Bernie Gallagher |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: greg stephens Date: 30 Jan 09 - 09:46 AM 9 Bundu Boys: correct 1 Is not Bernie Gallagher So far: 1) Likes his chocolate biscuits, not so fond of Saunders though. 2) Arthur Crudup 3)Robert Johnson 4) Aretha Franklin 5) He bowed and scraped to Monsieur Moreau 6) King Sunny Ade 7 Hall(Cliff)Just span for the last time(second name) 8) Odetta 9) Bhundu Boys 10) Armstrong (Louis) 11) Ma Rainey 12) Partner possibly made soap flakes? So 1, 5 and 12 still to do, I think. A statement of the subsidiary theme might help to solve the last ones. I don't think it has been mentioned yet. Time for a few clues possibly (they needed a lot on the other site!). My clue for 1 was challenged, on the grounds that it should have been cake not biscuit. For 5, where might people bow and scrape, know somebody called Moreau, and fit the subsidiary theme? 12 shouldn't be difficult, how many kinds of soap flake do you know? |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: GUEST,Johnmc Date: 30 Jan 09 - 10:12 AM In the spirit of discussion: Clue ! needs blues artist beginning with B. BB King Big Joe Turner or Williams Big Bill Broonzy Brownie McGee Eccles Cake Jennifer S Jennifer Eccles Jaffa Cake Bowing and scraping Violin Soap flake Lux |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: greg stephens Date: 30 Jan 09 - 10:21 AM What makes you think 1 must be a blues artist? I am not saying it is or it isn't, but why would you think that? |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: Will Fly Date: 30 Jan 09 - 11:08 AM Is it just my imagination, or do the first letters, when read down as an acrostic, make up the name of the newest American President...? |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: greg stephens Date: 30 Jan 09 - 11:15 AM NO Will F it is not your imagination. But I think others have beaten you to that deduction! However, nobody has spotted the subsidiary theme to the quiz, which will certainly help with getting the last three right. |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: GUEST,Johnmc Date: 30 Jan 09 - 11:43 AM Greg I think I overstated that: wasn't sure about the sort of music the African artists did. |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: Phil Edwards Date: 30 Jan 09 - 11:55 AM I thought the other theme was 'they're all Black musicians' - or is it not that obvious? |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: John MacKenzie Date: 30 Jan 09 - 12:04 PM Max Jaffa was a violinist |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: John MacKenzie Date: 30 Jan 09 - 12:10 PM Fritz Kreisler violinist, played for Louis Moreau ? |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: greg stephens Date: 30 Jan 09 - 01:53 PM Pip Radish has spotted what is going on here. All the artists are black, though they cover several continents and genres of music. I think you will find that it will be obvious whether you have the right answer anyway, the clues are pretty specific. Google away chaps, don't want this going on too long. |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: GUEST,Johnmc Date: 30 Jan 09 - 03:18 PM 5 Chevalier de Saint-Georges (googled) |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: Steve Gardham Date: 30 Jan 09 - 03:40 PM Are these American soap flakes or British soap flakes? Wasn't there a Colonel Saunders? SteveG |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: tijuanatime Date: 30 Jan 09 - 03:41 PM 12. Albert Ammons - boogie-woogie pianist, associated with Meade Lux Lewis |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: GUEST,Johnmc Date: 30 Jan 09 - 03:52 PM 1 Bosambo |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: greg stephens Date: 30 Jan 09 - 05:47 PM tijuanatime: Albert Ammons is quite correct. Just leaves the C bower anmd scraper(not Chevalier de St George, unless you can explain why it should be!). And also the B in Q1, who is not Boasambo(unless Bosambo is something to do with chocolate biscuits and doesn't like someone called Saunders). |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: greg stephens Date: 02 Feb 09 - 08:43 AM Well, I hope someone finishes the last few clues. It's dangling in the air. |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: tijuanatime Date: 02 Feb 09 - 08:55 AM The only musical Moreau I know is the 19th century composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk. |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: GUEST,johnmc Date: 02 Feb 09 - 09:01 AM For discussion: Is the Saunders clue saying "someone who dislikes chicken"? Also, BOWER is either a fiddler or a crawler? Moreau not known to me. |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: Nerd Date: 02 Feb 09 - 09:10 AM #5 is Canray (Fontenot), the Creole fiddler who sang and played "Bonsoir Moreau." |
Subject: RE: Appropriate-ish quiz From: Nerd Date: 02 Feb 09 - 09:13 AM By the way, the chicken magnate was SANDERS, not SAUNDERS, so unless Greg made a mistake it has nothing to do with that. |
