It is good to get back to Mudcat again... My wife & I are considering going to Anchorage Alaska July 3-11..Was hoping to get info from any local mudcatter in Alaska on any musical events or points of interest. Do see where John Hartford is performing on the 9th.. but we'll be coming back then.. Any of you northern neighbors on Mudcat?... Any help would be appreciated. You may leave messages on my personal page... Thanks...Keep on the sunny side.. GaryD

Thanks for response..Actually, was looking to see what events are going on around Anchorage during that time.. as well as suggestions for things to do..inexpensive lodging, etc...(If that isn't too much of an oxymoron...!)... We do have our airline tickets & car rented, but trying to avoid pricy hotels as we just want place to sleep... were thinking of possibly renting an RV or van..any suggestions or alternatives?...do they have anything like hostels etc? ...thanks... Gary

There is a guy named Wade Hampton Miller in Alaska who is very active in the music scene there. He hangs out on the rec.music.makers.guitar.acoustic newsgroup. I suggest you make a posting to that newsgroup with your question.

There's a lot of acoustic music going on all over the state and especially around Anchorage. Lodging will be a challenge because of the tour companies. And the cost will be high because it can be! By all means drive north to Denali (the Athabaskan word for Mt. McKinley which means "The Big One") and south to view Portage Glacier. The mosquitoes are not to be believed but you can purchase bug juice locally (Muskol is the absolute best). If you are going to try to walk around anyplace, you will need Muskol, long pants and longsleeve shirts, and possibly hats with mosquito netting. I am not exaggerating! There are lots of good restaurants, but not cheap or even inexpensive. If you have a day to spare, drive up to Fairbanks. It's a beautiful drive through the mountains; Denali is about halfway between Anchorage and Fairbanks. It's about a 7 hour drive, but well worth it. When you get to Fairbanks, visit the Visitors Cabin on 2nd Avenue, where they will have a listing of available accommodations. Lots of very neat B&B's. Most of all ... have fun. I've been gone 2 years but Alaska steals your heart, so it is never far from my thoughts. moonchild

The old Alaskan formula for dealing with mosquitos is to sleep inside an inverted metal garbage can with a hammer. When you wake up in the morning you bend all the stingers sticking into the can with your hammer and then it is safe to go outside.

Tiny mosquitos, In Viet Nam, two mosquitos landed at Quan Tri and they had 400 gallons of JP-4 loaded before they relised the mistake. :o)

I'd be in Alsaka in a hearbeat, if I could make a living there.
