It makes me happy for you to read that you had a great time. It is a pity that weekends are so short if one has to work Monday morning. Two days traveling and one day at Grimsby would have been too much for me. I fear that for the same reason, Iceland will be too far away for me. Now If the Iceland gathering would be in 2012 when I'll have ample time...

Iceland, BTW, is also close to another continent...

Wolfgang

No problem Doug - glad the weekend went well and sorry i couldn't be in two places at once!!
We had a great time in Lincoln anyway, with mostly Irish trad, a bit of old tyme and some cool jazz/gypsy style stuff too...oh and a Northumbrian piper from Donegal (don't ask!!).
Hope to get uyp to Barrow sometime in the Summer..

Best wishes to all

Doug, you should have been in Kiel today - another flea market all over the city centre! I'm sure you'd have found at least one more mug!

Glad to hear the gathering went well.

Well, our Eurogathering 2009 was a little shorter than traditional Eurogatherings but none the worse for that. Sorry we didn't make it to your session in Lincoln, Dáithí.

The weather held out for the barbecue and it was great to see Bill and Greycap during the afternoon. As with Friday, there lots of good songs and tunes at the evening session. The best thing that could be said about the saxophone playing is that it's a good job that the photos don't come equipped with sound.

Suzanne, if you take a look at Tim's photos you'll see that I'm drinking from the beer mug I bought in Keel. Happy memories of the 2007 Eurogathering.

Thanks to all that came along and made it a success:
Tim & Jen Leaning;
Helen (Rockhen);
Ian;
Carol;
Greg (Skipjack K8);
Lawrie (Bloke in the Corner);
Bill Sables;
Greycap;

And also to our non-Mudcatter friends;
Eddie and the others from the Tap & Spile;
Brian and his wife
Fred from the Fiddle Club

I'm looking forward to Staithes this summer and, hopefully, the next Eurogathering in Iceland.

Brill night, listening to you all, playing, chatting and looking forward to later :-) Really enjoyed it and the fact that there weren't loads and loads of us, didn't matter.
Had just plucked up courage and I was waiting for appropriate gap in the evening to ask Skipjack if I could have a drool over his accordion...No innunendo intended, honest, it is just a lot posher than mine! I knew I would regret not taking mine, it just seemed overkill with my piano.
Will pack my humble one today, along with the piano, uke, er...watch out for the lorry in the car park, I think I will need one!
Many thanks for organising the weekend, Doug!
H :-)

"(+mate)" is our very own Skipjack K8, organiser of the highly successful 2004 Eurogathering at Barrow-upon-Humber. I knew someone wasn't listening – sigh - there's always one! ;-)

I had a great night listening to you all ……………
I think you mean "I had a great night listening to and playing for you all ……………", Tim. Mudcat is no place to be modest.

As well as those Tim mentioned, there were several non-players from the Tap who turned up specifically to provide us with an audience. A great night with lots of great songs and tunes even if they were from a select group. It gave me the chance to do one or two I might not have tried otherwise.

It's bright and sunny this morning so, here's keeping fingers crossed that it stays that way for the barbecue.

Hi Doug

Yes, you are all very welcome to join us at the Dog'n'Bone, John St, off Monks Road Lincoln from 3pm.
It's a great little pub and there are a good number definitely attending - myself, Ian and our new fiddler Andrew will certainly be there, so quite an Irish flavour this time - but singers,shanty, old time , all styles welcome.
(Be nice to see you round theses parts Bloke!! Might even buy you an orange juice...)
Hope the rest of the weekend goes well and that some can make it to Lincoln on Sunday!
Best wishes

Dáithí

Sadly, Wolfgang has sent a P.M. to say that he won't be coming so now we are officially a Eurogathering.

The Tap & Spile is 2.2 miles north of the Scout HQ.

I know that there are some regulars from the Tap who will be there on Friday evening but Saturday is still a bit of an unknown as far as attendance goes.

Hi Doug,

I'll see what I can come up with (If there's anything else that needs adding, let Josie know and she'll pass the message on to me).

@ Carol: The pub isn't too far - and very easy to get to (pretty much follow the road towards the College, then aim towards top town - if you put "Alexandra Road" or "Garth Lane" into Google Maps, the pub is at the Fredrick Ward Way end of the road. There is limited parking available directly outside the pub, but finding somewhere nearby shouldn't be too difficult if you drive from Scartho.

If you decide to head straight to the pub, then Josie does do food between 12 - 3 and 5 - 7. Good grub as well!! (Shameless plug there :P)

Hi Doug
Sometime in the Friday afternoon, between 2 and 4 but we'll just wait around until people start turning up.
There is enough space for a small cmpervan on the Scout hut car park?
Is the pub very far from the Scout Hut please?

Looking forward to a good weekend.

Hi folks,

Sean, you can tell Josie that were doing are damnedest to get people there so any help she can give us with a flyer will be more than welcome. I'll give the Tappites a prod at tomorrow's Acousic night.

Lawrie, the timings and venues for the weekend are:

Friday evening:            Mixed song/tune session at the Tap & Spile, Garth Lane Grimsby from 8.00 p.m.

Saturday afternoon:    Cook-it-yourself barbecue at 5th Grimsby Scout HQ, Scartho from 2.00 p.m.
                                  Bring your own food and drink. I will provide the fires. Bring your instruments!

Saturday evening:       Acoustic evening as per afternoon venue, from 7.00 p.m. – Bring your own drinks.

Sunday:                      If anyone wants to, we could go to Lincoln and invade Dáithí's session at the Dog'n'Bone during the afternoon.

Les, that What's On entry looks good.

Carol, what time do you expect to be arriving?

If you put the "Scartho Fork, UK" (post code DN33 2LX) into Google Earth and zoom in onto the roundabout, you will see a driveway leading westward off the south-west entrance to the roundabout. The Scout hut is an L shaped building with car park in the top right hand corner of a square plot, behind the houses which line the road. The driveway is a single track so, to avoid congestion, you might prefer to use the public car park next to the medical centre a little way down Waltham Road.

I take a very relaxed view of what "acoustic" means, so Helen, you can bring your piano. Any instruments are acceptable, it's just that I won't be providing a p.a. system on Saturday evening

I haven't been online in ages, but wanted to wish you all fun at the gathering (if it goes ahead). Last year, we had to cancel last-minute when my father suffered a heart attack. I'm pleased to say he has made a slow but full recovery. Still, I can't make it to the gathering this year, as I will have to work 1 and 4 May, and am running somewhat low on funds.
Hope you will have a good time! Keep playin'.

From: Doug Chadwick

Hi folks,

With just one week to go, our Eurogathering is looking decidedly wobbly.

When Wilfried and Suzanne said that they weren't coming, that just left Don (Gulliver) + friends and Wolfgang coming from overseas. I sent a P.M. to each of them to see if they thought it was worth continuing. Don talked the situation over with his friends and they decided, quite reasonably, they were not so keen on spending the money to travel if no-one else would be there, as there is a lot going on in Dublin. Wolfgang has already booked his travel and accommodation but is trying to balance the cancellation costs against losing a weekend with his family. He is still considering whether it is worth coming or not.

Having come to a decision in my own mind that the weekend was not viable, several local 'Catters then posted to say that they were looking forward to the weekend. I have advertised it around some of the local clubs and music venues so, while I cannot guarantee attendance, some of these may turn up.

My own thoughts are that, at this late stage, it would be difficult to get the message out to any locals who might just turn up on spec. It would be a shame if they did turn up only to find it cancelled. The worst that could happen is that I find myself sitting alone in an empty pub on Friday and waste some charcoal on Saturday. We might have to relinquish the name "Eurogathering" as you can hardly have a gathering if there is nobody there to gather but what do you think folks? Shall we go ahead and see what happens?

DC

Thanks, Doug. I'm really sorry, you've done a great job organizing. But it's not unlike Kiel last year where only a handfulö of Mudcatters were able to turn up in the end. Still, with the help of quite a few local musicians we had a good time, dind't we? I'm sure the locals won't let you down!

I've turned to my malt whisky collection for consolation - one of them a Macallan Cask Strength (56%) bought at Stansted airport in 2003 on the way back from the Hull Eurogathering in frustration over British Rail's failure to deliver Wolfgang and me in time for our flight home. Got me in no end of trouble with my boss! (The missed flight, not the whisky!)
