need?

no-one needs a guitarist, banjo player, flautist et al

But at the end of that list all you have is yourself.

Want is the word that fits the sentiment.

and on that score drum machines are definitely a want we can do without. IMNSHO

Somewhere underneath these thoughtful and sympathetic comments do I detect some uncertainty about the role (roll?) of the drummer?

If, perhaps, a tractor would not be your first choice of mechanical drummer, what else might be more practical?

Of late, drummers, ie. all percusionists, have become the bane of my musical existance.

In our sessions we have three good bodhran players, along with a handful of thumpers, bangers, and rattlers on spoon and drum. To put it politely, that lot is just awful. One uses a brush type tipper and makes her bodhran sound like a shaky egg, all of which should be smashed into oblivion. I've been sorely tempted to pass out pen knives.

What is worse is when these insenstives try to back a ballad with their pounding. I've developed a reasonably good glare which stops some of them, but others pay no attention to anything but themslves.

End of rant - Tom

um ... it wasn't really a serious question; it was a light-hearted introduction to a somewhat amusing video clip - as a couple of you seemed to realize -

Should I be taking offense Tom?
I do sing to my drum on occasion but I usually leave you alone, still I don't know of anyone that wants never mind needs a drummer, even for St Pat's day, not even a singing drummer.

Typewriters work pretty well, especially the old manual ones with the bell that rings at every carriage return. I'm probably displaying my age here.

As for the other side of this thread, who needs any musician who can't play in time, doesn't listen to what's going on around them, and is too loud? At least with drums there is less chance that they will also be out of tune.

A drummer walks into a shop and asks for a Martin Guitar with a high action, Thomastic strings and mother of pearl inlay, because "I'm going to change my instrument and try something else".
The man behind the counter says, "You're a drummer, aren't you?"
"How did you know?" asked your man.
"This is a fishmongers".

The video clip reminded me a bit of the time I saw the Leningrad Cowboys' drummer doing the opposite- using a drum kit to make the sound of a tractor starting up!

More to the point, who needs drums? The other day I got a brilliant kick drum sound in the studio by sticking a mic inside a cardboard box, which rather ironically was the box for a new kick drum pedal..

I do. I have two very good and very different ones, who brilliantly help to shape the sound of my band. Once every few years, we get them onstage at the same time, which is special fun.

Somewhere, perhaps in 'manywheres', a group of drummers meet and discuss guitarist who cant keep a rhythm, play in tune, keep the thrashing volume at an acceptable level and find a suitable place to stick their guitar cases.

Perhaps that collection of folkie instruments we all know and love, the melodeon, banjo, guitar, bodhran, fiddle, piano accordion and so on come together because other instruments and their owners wont play with them.

Now, who do they look down on most and who is actually prohibited altogether, inspite of a long history of playing dance tunes??????????

Cheers

'Perhaps that collection of folkie instruments we all know and love, the melodeon, banjo, guitar, bodhran, fiddle, piano accordion and so on come together because other instruments and their owners wont play with them.'

No. Those instruments are ridiculed because they originated with people who didn't have a lot of money. That's all there is to it.

If somebody says 'Steinway' or 'Stradivarius,' people kowtow, because these instruments represent Big Money.

Meself, thanks for the link to the delightful video. I'm going to send it to my little nephew who wants to be a farmer when he grows up.

But wait a minute - if I send him the link, will the same ads that look like soft porn appear on the page? His mother and father won't thank me if that happens.

Hmmm, I don't know ... oh, you mean those links to other video clips - I suppose they will come up ...

I wanted to be a farmer too when I was a kid - if I'd known I could have combined driving a tractor with making music, no one could have stopped me ...

(Nice to know that some people are looking at the video!)

I tried bumping my security level up to high and still got the come-on for 'Sloppy Drunk in the Bathtub.'

The link is not going to my nephew, even though the video is perfectly harmless itself.
