Subject: RE: hard times - mcgarrigles From: Nick Date: 14 Mar 09 - 01:06 PM >> to sing harmony and people know who you are immediately but not to take it over just to make it good. Songs with what I hear as mcgarrigles harmonies just add. Haven't found where it subtracts. But you still know it's them doing that wonderful thing. And that's even more fantastic. I'm a fan. Can't help it. |
Subject: RE: hard times - mcgarrigles From: Nick Date: 14 Mar 09 - 01:01 PM John Didn't understand the second bit - is that a US thing? A friend at university introduced me to the Kate and Anna McGarrigles albums in the early 70s and I have always loved that sound. Never known where it came from so it's always been 'mcgarrigle harmonies' because they are SO distinctive. (A bit like James Taylor playing acoustic guitar somewhere way down in the mix and you still know it's him). Them singing together is stuff of magic. Transatlantic Sessions singing Wild Mountain Thyme is another favourite. They sing harmony (to me) differently to others. And I think that is incredible - to sing harmony and people know who you are immediately. Can't think of a lot of other people who I'd spot as harmony singers in the same way. |
Subject: RE: hard times - mcgarrigles From: john f weldon Date: 14 Mar 09 - 12:45 PM Well, it was shot for a documentary 20 years ago. Maybe that was the style of the time? Somehow it formed an interesting counterpoint (in my mind) to watching Jon Stewart and Jim Cramer on TV yesterday. |
Subject: RE: hard times - mcgarrigles From: Nick Date: 14 Mar 09 - 12:37 PM Wonderful singing. Is this irreverent? There's a bit right at the end though that so remonds me of the Muppet Show. Where the heads are rocking back and forwards. It doesn't detract from the singing but just muppet camera work |
Subject: hard times - mcgarrigles From: john f weldon Date: 14 Mar 09 - 11:51 AM Lily Lanken just posted this on Facebook, & I thought some mudcatters might enjoy it. Very appropriate these days. And those innocent young faces! Hard Times |
