I just received from Ebay a collection of old "Oink!" comics, and after flicking through them, my brother decided to search online for information concerning one of our favourite childhood artists, JT Dogg (Malcolm Douglas)..

I was devastated when I heard the news of his death. His work was a great inspiration, and many of his famous double-paged posters lined my old bedroom walls. Having discovered that he also shared a love of folk music has made me want to discover even more of his work..

Having found this forum in my search, I thought it would be a good place to show that his earlier work in illustration also inspired and touched peoples lives, and that this was indeed a great loss..

My condolences to his family and friends.

Ron Day (one of the co-writers of the pieces that appeared in the Guardian and the Sheffield Telegraph) has been kind enough to pass along a short note written by Malcolm's mum and brother. It was intended to appear with the Telegraph article, but in the end was not included. We thought that at least some of the people it was written for (and many more as well) would have a chance to see it if it was posted [modified very slightly] here:

Since coming to Sheffield in recent times and meeting Malcolm's friends and acquaintances, we have become aware of the depth of his involvement in the English folk music scene, both practically and academically. Thanks to all who were able to attend on April 2nd at Grenoside -- and afterwards at the Kelham Island Tavern, where we witnessed a celebration of Malcolm's life through his friends' respect and obvious love of performing music -- and also to all those who sent messages, but were unable to attend. We also wish to specifically thank Malcolm's friends who supported him during his illness.

Our friend Malcolm Douglas, who has died from cancer aged 54, had many talents, but two in particular brought him to national prominence. He had a compendious knowledge and understanding of traditional folk song (mainly, but not exclusively, English folk song), and he was a renowned illustrator and comic artist. He fell into these contrasting fields by accident, but he treated them with meticulous attention to detail and a professionalism that belied his lack of formal training.

He became an illustrator after volunteering to illustrate a student union newspaper at Sheffield University, and found that people were prepared to pay him to do what had hitherto been a hobby. His illustrations featured in a wide range of comics, of which the best known was Oink; he was also the illustrator of the footballing devilkin Fred the Red, for five years delighting both young and old readers of Manchester United match programmes.

For the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) he revised the evergreen song collection The Penguin Book of English Folk Songs, originally edited by Ralph Vaughan Williams and AL Lloyd in 1959. In his new edition, published in 2003 as Classic English Folk Songs, he corrected previous errors and brought to the book a wealth of additional detail. He did the same well-researched and comprehensive review of another of the EFDSS's most successful publications, Marrow Bones (2007), a collection of folk songs from Dorset and Hampshire, originally edited by Frank Purslow. He was working on a third, The Wanton Seed, when he succumbed to illness. He was also well-known among folk-music enthusiasts for his contributions to the online forum The Mudcat Café, where he had posted almost 9,000 detailed answers to questions about the most obscure aspects of folk song and music.

Malcolm was born and brought up in south London, and after attending Trinity School of John Whitgift in Croydon, he went to Sheffield University to study French and English and decided to stay on in the city, which he regarded as his home town.

He was committed to the principle of the people's ownership of their cultural heritage and was involved in many grassroots initiatives, even expressing concern about what he saw as the over-professionalisation of the folk arts. He was co-host at the Red Deer folk club in Sheffield for a decade and was active in regional organisations such as the South Riding Folk Network (SRFN) and Yorkshire Folk Arts, maintaining websites for both organisations, editing the SRFN magazine and designing the South Yorkshire folk magazine Stirrings.

Malcolm was also a performer, playing the fiddle, mandolin and cittern with various concert and dance bands, and was a familiar figure at music sessions in and around Sheffield.

He is survived by his mother, Sylph, and his brother, Ian.

I have only just caught up with this tragedy.
Yes, Malcolm was a remarkable man with remarkable knowledge and he will be sorely missed.
His scholarship certainly encouraged me to widen my own knowledge, partly by collecting old song books.
I hope his extensive collection will go to good use elsewhere.

I've just got back from Malcolm's send off.

After Bob Dylan's 'Lay Down Your Weary Tune', Raymond Greenoaken introduced four speakers on four topics.

The Illustrator: Tony Husband (cartoonist)

The Mudcat Hero: Dave Eyre (of this parish)

The Indispensible Quiet Man: Ron Day (South Riding Folk Network)

The Scholar: Malcolm Taylor (Vaughan Williams Memorial Library)

Then Musicians Martin Harwood, Keith Hinchliffe and Cath James played for Tegwen Roberts to sing 'Linden Lea', a piece that Malcolm himself nominated as his funeral music on a Mudcat thread.

Then the assembled company went to the Kelham Island Tavern in Sheffield to play music and sing songs.

It was a fitting send-off for a remarkable man.

Such information is, of course, standard in any regular newspaper-type obituary, so it should become available to the public, at least in the area of his home. The Guardian "Other Lives" column will almost certainly use the stuff we have sent. So it will appear there. I will certainly provide a link once it is on-line.

August 10th 1954 – March 22nd 2009 are the dates.

At the funeral there will be talks about his work as an illustrator, as a mudcatter, as a local musician and his work with the EFDSS.

Once the funeral is over if anyone wants a copy of the "mudcat" talk I am happy to email it.

Sad news.

Since Malcolm was so tremendously knowledgable, and seemed to epitomise the deepest kind of wisdom, I always assumed he was relatively elderly; so, when I first spotted the "Obit" thread title, I was not immediately shocked or taken aback.

However, after reading through the above, after seeing a fairly recent picture, and having learned of his mum's plans to attend his funeral, I am now shocked to realize that he was a relatively young man who died well before his time.

I don't believe there has been any mention here (yet) of his birthdate or his age, only his date of passing. Such information is, of course, standard in any regular newspaper-type obituary, so it should become available to the public, at least in the area of his home. I would be glad it someone could link us to such an obit, or to pass along a little more biographical data.

What a shock. I was used to Malcolm's frequent rescue of questions no one else could answer, and often benefited from his encyclopedic knowledge.

His vast well of folksong information, as far as I know, was close to endless. He was very nearly as much a master of numerous ins and outs of American folksong as he was of his native British.

He did not suffer fools gladly, and was not afraid to be blunt. I knew if I got a point wrong on a thread, he would sternly set me straight. He expected us to be knowledgeable, even when we weren't, and lost no time in giving us a brusque comeuppance. (Hope nothing inaccurate crept into this one, Malcolm!)

But how we benefited,and how much he gave us! His tart presence was one of the major factors that made Mudcat what it is.

There can be no replacement. Malcolm was unique. This loss is huge for all of us, and I will sorely miss him.

A few people have asked about dress code etc, at the funeral. First of all no flowers. Donations to go to the Macmillan Nurses. Dress casually.

Those who knew Malcolm personally will know he rarely appeared without a waistcoat. So if you have a fancy coloured waistcoat then wear it in his memory.

It will be at Grenoside Crematorium, North Chapel, Skew Hill Lane, Grenoside, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S35 8RZ.

Malcolm produced the programmes and publicity material for Sheffield Folk Festival from 2003-2007 and they were indeed of great quality. I'm sure the standard of the work was one of the reasons we acheived good audience numbers from the start. He was, as my colleague there has reported, in the background beavering away but when he had a comment to make it was always pertinent and usefull never trivial. A wise man indeed, who as this thread has shown will be greatly missed

I had the pleasure of working (and occasionaly playing) with Malcolm between 2003 - 2007 as part of Sheffield Folk Festival team.

Among other things Malcolm was reponsible for designing the programmes where his tirless attention to detail, vast knowledge and graphic skills ensured that these publications will be collectors items.

Apart from the 2004 programme, where there was "a bit of space to fill" Malcolm's work was largely uncredited which is how he preferred things.

The folk world in general and the Sheffield area in particular will miss Malcolm enormously.

I've just remembered -- it was Malcolm who came up with the words to "Sleepers Awaken" when I needed them. Nobody else remembered them. Not anyone anywhere. I just had the few bit's from True-love's memory. It was this song that made my production special. Now I can't get the words out of my head along with the thoughts of the special person we've lost.

Coming to this thread late, I can only echo many of the sentiments expressed here. As I've mentioned several times in other threads, when I joined Mudcat specifically for help on some lyrics, Malcolm was the first to answer, not only with the line in question but background information on the poem and its writer.

I soon learned that, most often, the most learned and considered response to any "squabble" on Mudcat would come from Malcolm. I already miss him. Although I did have the opportunity to meet him once I knew him far better from his online persona.

My tribute for a life well spent, Malcolm. May your onward journey be filled with even better and greater quests.

I much regret the passing of Malcolm Douglas. When I had time to be a regular contributor to this forum, it was he and Bruce Olsen who had the best things to say. Bruce's work (website) has been preserved by the Department of Folklore at the University of California in Fresno. It is to be hoped that a similarly appropriate memorial will commemorate Malcolm.

Malcolm's contributions here enriched my musical and intellectual life immeasurably.

Mudcat is a treasure, and Malcolm is one of the people who has made it so. It is a joy to be connected if only by the Net to so many people who share a passion for the music. And many who take it seriously. Yet even here, not so many of us have had the drive, the dedication, the resources (inner and outer), and the brilliance to track down the music to the extent Malcolm did.

There was something deeply satisfying about the way he could illuminate a tune or a song, bringing it to life in one context or another, that made it easy to acknowledge one's own limitations or biases. I never felt chided by his corrections, never felt that they were motivated by anything other than a desire for truth and understanding.

There is a lot not to like in the world sometimes; I feel deeply blessed when I think about Mudcat, and Malcolm. Integrity, passion, intellectual excellence, and a sense of not being alone in the things that really matter, the things that feed the soul.

I often send a prayer of appreciation for the departed and good speed when I see an obituary here. It's not often I feel compelled to express it to the community. I couldn't let this one pass without a word for how much Malcolm's presence here meant to me.

I just wanted to add my thoughts on our huge loss of Malcolm. He was such a knowledgeable friend and so generous with his knowledge and skills.

He built and maintained the Yorkshire Folk Arts website ( as well as the South Riding Folk Network one) - on a totally voluntary basis and was a much valued member of the committee.

Just a very special person who will be so much missed.

Haven't permitted myself to visit Mudcat much during the last few years (due to its addictive qualities), but when I heard about Malcolm...

I was shocked to hear this dismal news from FolkieDave at a pub sing in Sheffield last (i.e. Sunday) night. Like so many others, I knew he had been ill, but had no idea just how serious it was. We drank to his memory, and Paul & Liz D. sang one of his favourite songs (an Anglicised version of 'Twa Corbies' which, it turns out, was a Scottish version of a song which originated in Yorkshire... so -- very appropriate.)

Earlier today, Ron & Jenny Day assured me that copies of this thread will be shared with Malcolm's family; they think the family will enjoy being able to see the high esteem in wich Malcolm is held by so many. May it provide some comfort...

As for me, while it has already been mentioned here & there above, I'd just like to emphasize the huge part Malcolm played in the Sheffield & Yorkshire folk scene(s). Although I only met him a couple of times myself, I can tell you that he was one of those people who do a great deal of work 'behind the scenes' -- but isn't necessarily one of the better-known faces -- because he didn't do the high-visibility stuff. A lot of people in the folk scene are in it (at least partly) for the attention and/or enjoy the limelight (that's an observation, not a criticism), but Malcolm -- quietly -- did massive amounts of tedious, 'non-glamourous' work, including setting up & maintaining the South Riding Folk Network website; doing the layout for loads of printed materials for the Sheffield Folk Festival; working on 'Stirrings' -- the local folk publication; and no doubt a fair few other things I don't know about.

Not only that, he coped with tight deadlines and the (too often) late supplying of needed info -- with good humour; a model of grace under pressure. IF he received credit for his contributions, it was usually in small print near the bottom (of whatever). I have a special admiration for those who are honestly not bothered about whether or not they receive any recognition for their efforts, and I believe Malcolm was one of those rare souls.

Sometimes it seems like it's the folks we can least afford to lose who get 'taken away' the soonest...

Such a shock to find this thread. It feels as though we've lost a friend that we thought would always be there. Especially as he had started posting on Mudcat again after his earlier hospitalisation.

It is said that no-one is indispensible - I disagree. In terms of academic knowledge and research in folk song, I can't imagine anyone ever being of such help to so many people. Never getting embroiled in the arguments, sorry, heated discussions that arose in so many threads, but always the voice of calm reason and fact, Malcolm seemed to me to be the most valuable resource any of us could wish for. It saddens me that his work on the 'Marrow Bones' series can't be completed - or will have to be completed by other lesser mortals.

If we feel the loss so much, how much harder must it be for his family and close friends. I hope that the knowledge of the high regard in which he was held will help them in their loss.

It is a strange sensation to find myself so devastated by the loss of someone with whom my relationship existed largely in cyberspace. I fear Malcolm is irreplacable in terms of his huge knowledge and his generosity and patience in sharing it. I was lucky enough to meet Malcolm a couple of times, and he was generous and helpful with his great knowledge. We had a long chat in November at the TSF in Sheffield: he was mentally vigorous, cheerful and positive, but he was obviously very ill and quite weak. We were walking back up a hill, and I suddenly felt that I was drawing ahead. I apologised for going too fast. He said No, It was he who should apologise! A gentleman to the end.

I was so sad to hear this news. What a great loss Malcolm's passing will be to his family and many friends, especially here on Mudcat. I feel privileged to have met him and was impressed by his quiet manner (I'd always been impressed by his encyclopaedic knowledge and his scholarship).

Malcolm taught me an important lesson here on Mudcat - if you're imparting some information, mention where you got that information. Or if it's just your opinion, say that it's just you opinion, or that you might have read it somewhere. People who use the Internet to gain knowledge (not just Mudcat, we are much better than the average) would do well to follow Malcolm's example.

This is a sad sad loss.

How many times has discussion of a tune or song deteriorated into a mess of conjecture and wrong turns and brick walls, and we've known that it would all get sorted out when Malcolm showed up?

I can't help but think of that Gary Larson cartoon of sheep at a cocktail party, with the caption: "Our party's total chaos! No one knows when to eat, where to stand, what to .. Oh, thank God! Here comes a Border collie!" That's how I often felt about discussions awaiting Malcolm's appearance.

My sincere condolences to his family and friends - including us here, regardless of how well we may have known him. Like Spaw, I too thought right away of the empty chairs at the Mudcat table ...

I'd like to think there is a renewed obligation upon all of us who remain to keep Malcolm's commitment to research and accuracy alive, off list and on.

He and I exchanged views and knowledge on and offlist on a vast variety of subjects, conversations to which his contribution was infinitely more erudite and valuable than mine. Not least, his Mac Help By Email was without parallel.

Time indeed to conclude that wading through the rest of the dross by comparison that gets posted on here is utterly pointless if Malcolm's not going to show up any more to impart the right answers.

I only ever met him via his postings on Mudcat but his scholarship set, for me anyway, the benchmark. Always succinct, only ever critical in the properly constructive sense, his contributions will be sorely missed.

Because of the detail he contributed and also the way he drew together the relevant postings from diverse threads I think it important that newcomers have their attention drawn to his contributions. Perhaps via a Permathread. Some may see this as a memorial but I suggest it as a valuable resource.

....coming in late today, I am in shock. Malcolm was ....was... all the good things said above. He was the rare combination of musician and scholar.
I had the rare honor a couple years ago of being able to obtain a scan of an old book he was unable to obtain in England, and get it to him.

Malcolm & the late Bruce Olson used to compare notes here on arcane details of early music.... I don't think either of them were religious, but I'd like to imagine them with an eternity to argue over minutiae.

We have so many of their contributions in Mudcat to remember them by....

We will miss Malcolm terribly.

When questions came up about the origins of a song, he was always the one who pulled the story together. A discussion was not complete until Malcolm Douglas had his say, and, more often than not, it was not even begun till his initial post.

Often, he entered a discussion somewhat late, owing to the fact that he took time to research and check his answers, and to make sure that his references were properly cited and complete. In his postings, he was always both a gentleman and a scholar, and as enriched as we were by his presence, we are that much poorer for his loss.

I only knew him from his postings here, but I'll miss him a lot. Deepest regrets to his family and friends.

This is shocking news. I have known Malcolm for several years and he has been a huge driver in the academic work of the English Folk Dance and Song Society, republishing song books (Marrowbones and English Classic Folk Songs) and putting the contents pages of the Folk Music Journal online. His work in other areas such as support for Yorkshire Folk Arts and South Riding Folk Federation was also an important contribution.

And a really nice guy to have a drink with.

The folk world is indeed a poorer place tonight.

I used to give Malcolm a hard time for being such a serious scholar, and in part because he never hesitated to straighten me out on the facts when I ventured into any area of music history with which he was familiar. Which was pretty much all of them. As the years went by, I began to look for his posts concerning music which interested me, and took his word as gold. I don't ever recall seeing a post by him below the BS line, because he took this forum and his scholarship seriously.

Malcolm Douglas was a fixture and a cornerstone of this community all these years and though we knew his health had become a problem he kept it well in the background as was his nature. There are no words to express the overall sadness the news of his passing brings to this place. He was much loved and respected.

All of my best goes to his family and those who knew him best but I'd also send some compassion out to the other denizens of this unique place we have here. The Mudcat was far better than it ever could have been with him and we will be lessened immeasurably by his loss.

This comes, almost to the day, five years on from the death of Rick Fielding.....another giant of the 'Cat. We can never replace what these men brought here. We are left blessed by the time they spent, the knowledge they left, and passion they shared.

I'm shocked at this news; his erudition was legendary, and his patience with the rest of lesser mortals in this respect was that of a saint. He was one of the reasons I came to Mudcat and always kept a close eye on his contributions. His legacy in this respect is one of the most important on-line resources with respect of traditional folk song. Malcolm and I met many moons ago in Sheffield & I was flattered that he alluded to it once on Mudcat.

Oh my God. This is absolutely dreadful news. In the small world of traditional music knowledge Malcolm stood as a giant. He leaves huge shoes to fill.

Many of you will remember that Malcolm was ill towards the end of last year.

He was taken into hospital just over a week ago and his condition was found to be inoperable. It was his expressed wish that this news was kept to a number of close friends.

Malcolm died this afternoon this afternoon (Sunday March 22nd UK time). His brother Ian and his mother were with him.

I am sure there are many people who hold Malcolm in great esteem and rightly so. Ron Day recorded some of his story recently and I'll put together a short version of that and post it on here over the next week or so.
