Subject: Folk Club Thrives From: nager Date: 23 Mar 09 - 05:59 AM Our newly formed Lakeside Folk Circle at Teralba, NSW Australia continues to grow and thrive. Our second gathering was on Sunday and we had a greater number than at our launch day - about 60 people and 18 of them musicians and singers and most got a spot up the front albeit very briefly for some. Interestingly many of the audience were "non folkies" who came along in response to our local newspaper publicity and absolutely loved it. Admission is just $2.50 with pensioners paying half price and kids under 16 free. Tea, coffee and biscuits are included. In the current economic gloom, word is getting around that you can have a very good afternoon of music for virtually no cost compared to going to a pub or licensed club or (god forbid) a mayor entertainment centre. And, yes we not only broke even on Sunday but made a good profit - which will go to the proceeds from our upcoming charity night. The hall hire and refreshments cost us around $40 and we took approx $100 at the door. We now have local musicians "knocking on the door" to get a spot at the club and exposure for their music. Next gathering is on April 26 at the Teralba Community Hall from 4pm. Who said folk clubs were dying???? |

Subject: RE: Folk Club Thrives From: nager Date: 23 Mar 09 - 10:14 PM Thanks people! We face a couple of tough months ahead with major "competition" from the St Albans Folk Festival not far down the road on the same weekend in April and a three day Celtic Festival also at Teralba (believe it or not!) on the same weekend as our gathering in May. Yes, folk music here is truly alive and well ... it must be something they have put in the water!! |
