Been workin' in 'em for years and would love to find the song John Hartford wrote about this kinda life. He's got a dandy website, but no lyrics I could find.

Here is a recording of part of the song. It's on the Flying Fish album, "Me, Oh My, How the Time Does Fly: A John Hartford Anthology." This album is a great introduction to John's work, and it's a generous collection of 18 cuts. Lots of fun music.

Thanks, Harpy - click here for the lyrics. Song titles in quotes don't show up in "forum search," but they do in the filter.

In Tall Buildings
John Hartford (1971)
Sam Bush tribute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTuwHEz1jKg

Someday, my baby, when I am a man
And others have taught me the best that they can
They'll sell me a suit then cut off my hair
And send me to work in tall buildings

So it's goodbye to the sunshine. Goodbye to the dew.
Goodbye to the flowers and goodbye to you
I'm off to the subway I must not be late
I'm going to work in tall buildings

Oh when I retire and my life is my own
I made all the payments. It's time to go home
And wonder what happened betwixt and between
When I went to work in tall buildings

So it's goodbye to the sunshine. Goodbye to the dew
Goodbye to the flowers. And goodbye to you
I'm off to the subway. I must not be late
Going to work in tall buildings

So it's goodbye to the sunshine. Goodbye to the dew
Goodbye to the flowers. And goodbye to you
I'm off to the subway. I must not be late
Going to work in tall buildings
