Does anyone else like sweet honey in the rock? I saw them twice this week once in Bristol and once at the royal festival hall in London. They did a different set each time and I was overwhelmed by their incredible voices, skill and commitment to what they do. I saw them about ten years ago in Manchester and have listened to them since. They are great cd's to sing along with as there are so many parts to join in with. (they are an acapella group) Emmie

LOVE THEM

First fell in love with them at Clearwater. They collectively autographed my copy of their album, which I promptly gave away as a gift to someone I knew would love it even more (I'm such a softie).

I used to sing Gospel with some people who sing with them, but that's the "closest" I ever got to them.

We saw them recently at Symphony Hall in Boston. Words can't fully explain our totalawe at the power of this group. The voices and harmony are incredible, the music itself is inspiring, the timing precise.

The performance is choreographed, so there is usually some dancing or other movement as well. Finally, one member of the group signs throughout the performance (they are strong supporters of the hearing impaired). This adds another dimension to the listening/viewing experience.

Though the music is magnificent, it is a strongly visual show, and listening to them on recordings just isn't the same. The audience really gets into it too, which only adds to the excitement.

An absolutely thrilling experience!

Chronicled by themselves in the book "We Who Believe In Freedom", ISBN 0-385-46862-8 1993, well worth reading. All you need to know about the ggroup and their members.

Now is time to be performing Ella's song, aka We Who believe in Freedom. It is perfect for marches and demonstrations, as well as vigils. I used it last night, changing the second line of the chorus to: "We who believe in Justice shall not rest until it comes . . ."
The concepts of freedom and justice are inseparable.

Agree! Lots of singers in Glasgow know and sing their songs, possibly via the late Gordeanna McCulloch and the late Anne Neilson - Anne introduced Gallus Molls to Sweet Honey in the Rock, we sang Ella's Song at Mayfest and Tryst festivals along with many traditional and contemporary songs, mainly Scottish with a sprinkling of other cultures! Then both Anne and Gordeanna were involved in teaching and inspiring many other choirs, groups and individuals.......
Never had the chance to see Sweet Honey In The Rock live, but have an album and watched a great video at Anne's.

YES!!
After being introduced to their music by Catter, Stewie (in Darwin), I have been lucky enough to see them perform 3 times in Australia since the mid 1980s - absolutely fabulous concerts and music!!!

Here is a version of "Ella's Song" from our Darwin a cappella harmony group, Mná :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oe-3aAOW-Sw

Hope you like it, but be sure to check out the myriad Sweet Honey albums!

"Ella's Song" was written by Bernice Johnson Reagon, founder of the fabulous "Sweet Honey in the Rock" African-American a cappella harmony ensemble.

“Until the killing of black men, black mothers' sons, becomes as important to the rest of the country as the killing of a white mother's son, we who believe in freedom cannot rest until this happens.”
? Ella Baker

“Ella Josephine Baker (1903–1986) was an African American civil rights and human rights activist whose career spanned over five decades….....”

A song also highly relevant to the ongoing sad situation in Australia for indigenous peoples.

Love,
Rich-Joy
