Is there a problem with the Link maker? - I cannot get it to work today.

If I copy/paste the link into the Address Bar it is fine - but as a Hyperlink it fails.

Now, one could actually learn to make links without assistance, a process that works much faster....

<a href="http://www.mudcat.org">Click here</a>

<a href="mailto:joe@mudcat.org">Click to e-mail</a>

If you're posting links at Mudcat, the quotation marks are optional. I prefer not to use them, because they complicate the task of making links. Simple is better, I think. Fewer misteaks.

I find it's best to open a new browser window [CTRL-N] and navigate your way to the site you want to link to. Highlight and copy [CTRL-C] the URL (address) of the site, and then go back to your Mudcat message and paste [CTRL-V] the URL into your link. Be sure to include the http:// in that URL. The quotation marks are standard procedure, but most links work just fine without quotation marks.

Since I don't use the blickifier, perhaps I shouldn't speculate, but it appears that when you type (or paste) a URL that lacks the "http://" at the beginning, the mudcat blickifier assumes it's meant as a local link so it adds "http://www.mudcat.org/" to the front of it.

A "mouse hover" over a link shows the target URL on a toolbar in my browser, so it's fairly easily seen that a very high percentage of "broken blickifications" do include an extraneous "mudcat.org/" bit.

While in the philosophical sense all the worthy parts of the universe are to be found right here within the mudcat, it appears that looking on the inside-of-here for places that foolishly believe they have an external existence sometimes doesn't work all that well. It's just a matter of pathological denial of the truth and meaning of "existing" on their part, I would suppose.

It's an interesting challenge to describe a computer process in words that people can understand.
Without the http:// a Mudcat link will connect only to pages within Mudcat. For Mudcat pages, the "blickifier" removes the http:// - even though the link will actually work with it.

Now, the blickifier isn't quite smart enough to add the http:// when it's needed.

In my example above, the red part is the URL you're connecting to - it's easy to copy that from the address bar of your browser.

The blue part are the words people see in the link - anything you like, even a picture.

The black part is the HTML coding - note that HTML tags are always enclosed in <angle brackets> they end with a repeat of the command, preceded by a slash.

In this case, the command is <a followed by some modifiers (href=so-and-so)>
The command is ended by </a>

It's much easier to understand with something simple like these:
<b>bold</b>
<i>italics</i>
<u>underline</u>

It brings me great joy when someody finally understands "blue clickys," and can accomplish them without the "blickifier."

The last couple of times I used it the blickifier failed for me when sharing a Mudcat thread.

pasting
http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=158835
created (plus the arrow bracket things)

a href="/mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=158835">/mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=158835

> 404
https://mudcat.org/mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=158835

After copying & pasting the link it now seems to need the addition of
http:/
after
href="

/mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=158835

or I might have been unlucky
or missing something?

I've been ridiculed for not being able to do this stuff. My problem is usually that I can't work out what the actual bit in the newspaper (etc.) article is that's supposed to form the link I want. I hate having to keep saying "Google this" but it's better than nothing I reckon. I did one this morning in the post-brexit thread (easy, tigers, it's where angels fear to tread) to an article that was in the Guardian in September. But where's the bit that's supposed to make the link?

OK, I relent. Here's what I asked people to Google:

"Boris Johnson's £350m claim is devious and bogus. Here's why"
(John Lichfield, Guardian, 18 Sept)."

What bit relating to that piece forms the link to it?? ??

Stupidly yours, Steve

Steve, I'm looking at that article on a chrome browser on a tablet.
Right up at the top of the window is a box with the text
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/sep/18/boris-johnson-350-million-claim-bogus-foreign-secretary

That is called the 'url\URL'.
If I copy it and paste it into the top box of the 'Make a link ("blue clicky)'
then click 'Create link'
I see this, but with an extra lefthand arrow before 'a href'...

Cut and paste this into your post:

a href="https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/sep/18/boris-johnson-350-million-claim-bogus-foreign-secretary">https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/sep/18/boris-johnson-350-million-claim-bogus-foreign-secretary

Copying everything in that section then pasting it I get

Cut and paste this into your post:

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/sep/18/boris-johnson-350-million-claim-bogus-foreign-secretary

I'd normally then delete the"Cut and paste this into your post:" bit.

Is that any help?

You can type some text into "Link text (optional*:" but in my experience I'd rather see the URL in the post.
To me it always feels a bit dangerous to blindly click on a blue link unless I trust the member posting it.

~~~~~~
Some URLs don't show the http or www prefix but when you do the copypaste they show up.
??I think it is particularly the http \https part which the Mudcat blickyfier needs.
Someone else might explain that better.
In the clicky wizard, after you've pasted in the url you can write something more pithy into the 'Insert text (optional)' box, and get:
Here's another way of looking at it. the standard part of a link is black, the URL is red, and the text is blue (or you can paste in the URL a second time in place of the text)
<a href="http://www.mudcat.org">Click here</a>
But the "blickifier" link maker is one of the many things Max fixed yesterday, and it's working for those of us who don't want to learn all this gobbledy-gook.
Jo, if you want to share a Mudcat thread using the blickifier what method do you recommend to avoid the
A full URL, with http:// or https://, should always work. Copying the URL in the address bar - whether or not the http part is actually displayed, will normally include the hhtp://
e.g. https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=163179&messages=2
If the link is to mudcat you can leave out 'https://mudcat.org'. But that's more complicated to do so there's little point.
e.g./thread.cfm?threadid=163179&messages=2
That's called a 'relative URL' because it's relative to the current site.
Oh, interesting. I knew the change to more secure servers changed Mudcat's address slightly (from http:// to https:// ), but it also added a second slash after the mudcat.org.
If I recall, the blickifier used to automatically strip http://mudcat.org/ from Mudcat addresses to create proper internal Mudcat addresses. But the blickifier doesn't do that properly now, and it should mess up any Mudcat link you try to make with the blickifier.
Here's what you have to do to make an internal link with the blickifier until Max figures out a solution: copy the within-mudcat URL only from the word thread to the end, and then paste that into the blickifier and submit.
The other thing you could do is learn to make an HTML link from my handy-dandy guide, and then you'll be really, really proud of yourself.
<a href="http://www.mudcat.org">Click here</a>
But I'll let Max know about the glitch, and maybe he'll figure out a solution.
There's not a www in the mudcat address - I had also used it there in my example above, but took it out. Just for a point of pedantry.
Subject: RE: Tech: Blue Clicky
Hmmm. I hadn't noticed that. The www still works, but it just takes me to mudcat.org without the www.
I stopped using the www about 10 years ago, and I also stopped using quotation marks inside links. But I thought the www and quotes were still "official," although things work just find without them.
The way I make an internal link is <a href=thread.cfm?threadid=163172>(click)</a> - (click)
The only variable is the thread number itself.
No. For the normal link I used my browser_tools_addon which generates a link with one click or tap with no copying or pasting. I'm using Android too - but Firefox not Chrome. (Doesn't work on iThings.)
For the relative link I had to copy and edit the first. (There may once have been a benefit of using such links on mudcat, but there isn't now.)
If you want to link to a post within a thread, as I just did, click the poster's name in the list at the top of the thread before copying the URL. The URL should then end e.g. threadid=159035#3882185
That will work in some pages (e.g. a thread) but may not in others (where the page is in a subdirectory
mudcat.org/something/page.cfm
I don't know whether there are any such pages but better to start it with a "/" - e.g. /thread.cfm...
You can probably leave the quotes off the href= if a link contains no spaces, or some other characters, but it's non-standard. A copied URL should not contain spaces - the copy should replace them with %20.
I am not sure but I believe it is still the case - Max's Blickie thing didn't check for http:// . Now that it uses https:// things have changed and browsers may not be able to accommodate due to the security that the protocol demands.
which meant that if you type without the protocol bit (say) just <A HREF=mister.red>Mr Red</A> your browser would assume it was somewhere on the mudcat site. I would guess Freddy Heady's problemo was in the same category.
Using /mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=119988 -
it appends it to the domain and becomes https://mudcat.org/mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=119988
I note that the URL for this thread now contains // following mudcat.org
let us see - if I remove mudcat.org and just use the bit after:
using - /thread.cfm?threadid=119988&messages=32#3889703   (that worked)
same using - // as an alternative   (seems to hang)
both should open in a new Tab (if they work) - I am now testing......
see above for results.
a minor point but if you want to create a blickie and not have to type (and make errors):
Just click in the URL field of your browser and Cntrl C (or right click and copy) then paste. This will ensure you have https or http as appropriate (easy to miss if you type).
I do it all the time because consistent with others' reportage, as you get older you can easily type two letters the wrong way round, if they are coming from different hands. It is a well known phenomenon.
The second // is just a typo for /, happily it doesn't harm and leads to the same document.
URLs usually are of the form https://server.domain/directory/subdirectory.../document?option&anotheroption
In this case, the second // just contains an empty directory name which gets interpreted as "stay in the current directory".
