If anyone is in the devon area over Easter, here is the latest Exmouth acoustic update. If people find it helpful, I'll post it monthly. Jeff

Hi all,
A busy April in prospect, with the Easter holiday to look forward to.

The 31st march sees the first of the 5th Tuesday showcase nights at the Manor Hotel Folk Club. A Great line up awaits you, starting with the Cornelius Family, then sopme new solo material from Martin Weller. The first half is closed by new dynamic duo, Mr Paddy and Lara Conley. Nigel Challis and Dave Sanderson then preview their 'Night without James Taylor' before the Old Porch Band play us out. Mouthwatering or what? 8.00 start.

The concert this Month is on Saturday 4th. We have well known local bluesman Ian Mckenzie, and our own Becky Brooks, with a special programme that is being assessed for her Music degree. Please support this event, we've had some great concerts lately, but the level of support has been poor, and the series will have a break for the summer after the July concert while I consider an alternative strategy.

Folk Nights are on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays, the 7th and 21st April. There are usually plenty of spots on the first tuesday, which is just finding its feet, the third tuesday continues to be well supported. All 8.00.

EXTRA SPECIAL TREAT. On Fri 17th April we are sponsoring a concert at the Manor Hotel by the wonderful 'Roots Union'. Ex Rolle College music students Tobias Ben Jacob and Phil Henry, with former jam night leader Mike Sykes and violinist Hannah Martin are returning to their own roots to give Exmouth ba taste of their original and compelling sound that is bringing rave reviews from festivals and clubs around the country. 8.00.

11a Church Street hosts a burgeoning open Mic on Wednesdays, with open spots and featured artists, hosted by Chris Woods.

The Famous Old Barrel has an acoustic open Mic every Monday, with different hosts every week.

April 6th Jeff Lewis, 13th Mr Paddy, 20th Martin Weller, 27th Dave Green.

The Bicton Inn has live Music every Thursday.

April 2nd Folk Jam. 9th Piet Botes, 16th Nashville Rash with Richie Evans 23rd Dave Green, 30th TBA.

Easter Monday sees a charity event for the meningitis trust in the Manor Gardens. The Exmouth Shantymen will be performing at 3.30 on the stage.

ADVANCE NOTICE    May's concert brings the wonderful Dave Wood, suppoted by Josie LLoyd, to the manor Hotel on 9th may. If you have witnessed Dave's superb guitar playing and sensitive singing you are in for a treat. The end of May brings the Exmouth Festival, with a veritable cornucopia of acoustic music events.
Hope to see you all. Jeff

Thanks for the info Jeff.

It does however make me sick that there's all this going on in the town now whereas, when I was growing up there, bugger all ever seemed to happen!

I have very happy memories of Exmouth as a child on holiday in early the 1950's.
My family used to rent a "Camping Coach" that was parking in the sidings at Littleham Station - which is now no more!

Blimey Tim! Small world.

I used to live *in* Littleham Station building in the mid-1970s. It was turned into a private house after the line closure & the station land was developed.

Cheers, Woody, a lot of the growth is very recent. We used to get some great talent coming to town to do the music degree at Rolle College, now sadly relocated to Plymouth, but the injection had lasting effects, adding a whole raft of talented singer/songwriters, some of whom setttled here, and re-vivifying old traddoies like me who always did pub sessions, but was inspired to organise more acoustic venues where people could get a decent spot.
You and Tim could now cycle past where you used to live, the old railway line has been turned into a cycle path between Exmouth and Budleigh. Jeff

I used to go to Exmouth ,with my Royal Naval colleague and musical associate,Robin Tedbury, from Sidmouth,in the mid 1960s----It seemed to be quite lively folk-wise in those days; I remember going to a concert there to see, among others, the great Shirley & Dolly Collins. There was a music shop there too, with lots of guitars, banjos etc in the window--is it still there ??

Hi bubblyrat. I think the old music shop closed, but there are now two, one in Exeter road, called picks and strings and things, and one in Albion Stret. Both proprietors support local music and sell a good range of acoustiv instruments and accoutrements jeff
