Subject: RE: Monk on BBC4 (UK) From: GUEST,guest: NormanD Date: 17 Apr 09 - 05:48 PM Watching Art Blakey now (well, mainly listening) - fab stuff. There was once a time that a particular record label - Blue Note - not only gave you a defined sound but guaranteed a quality. The programme on Nica Rothschild was fascinating. What a cool woman, cat lover too. In the face of my views against our rulers and bankers, I make a big exception for her. And Monk is next. A great night's tv viewing. |
Subject: RE: Monk on BBC4 (UK) From: Will Fly Date: 18 Apr 09 - 03:55 AM Excellent night on BBC4. Monk was a wonderful pianist - just listening to him playing "Dinah" and the way he brought out the tune, with echoes of Fats Waller's stride piano style said it all. And the programme on Nica was superb. More of this, please. |
Subject: RE: Monk on BBC4 (UK) From: GUEST,buspassed Date: 18 Apr 09 - 06:16 AM Interesting that the BBC4 docco 'The Jazz Baroness' was a spinoff from a 30 min. radio programme on BBC R4. The radio version told the story of Nica buying in a table tennis table as Monk loved to play, not a mention in the TV docco, yet there was time for endless footage of mooching around NY. There were also clips in the TV docco from a Jazz 625 session which I'm sure weren't in the 625 shown last night. Makes me think that the stories I've heard about there being two 625 Monk sessions recorded at the Marquee to be true so can we have a look at the second one please? |
