Subject: RE: BS: I have hit the bigtime. From: John Hardly Date: 26 Apr 09 - 01:39 PM Cool! Which of those Carvelles was you, Bruce? I never figured you for a miniskirt kinda guy. Great legs, though. I guess if I had legs like yours, I'd be the miniskirt type too. |
Subject: RE: BS: I have hit the bigtime. From: Little Hawk Date: 26 Apr 09 - 01:45 PM Wow!!! They are just totally classic! The look! The sound! The haircuts! The name! The "Caravelles". Perfect. They are like the very prototype of a certain moment in British pop music that we all lived through. Thanks for the link, Peace. |
Subject: RE: BS: I have hit the bigtime. From: Rapparee Date: 26 Apr 09 - 02:00 PM Dang. I think I used to date one or the other or both of them. |

Subject: RE: BS: I have hit the bigtime. From: VirginiaTam Date: 26 Apr 09 - 02:12 PM I was 7 years old in 1965. When was this single released? Anyway how Lovely for you! Blast from the past. The sound and the look. I remember my first mini skirt. I was 8 and beebopping along to stuff like this Hang on Sloopy and Mighty Quinn and Monday, Monday and Georgy Girl |
Subject: RE: BS: I have hit the bigtime. From: Rapparee Date: 26 Apr 09 - 02:14 PM Bruce, I once had a gig at the Pike County Fair, scheduled to sing during the 4-H Swine Judging. Yup, I'd hit the pigtime but was asked to quit the singing business after fourteen people were trampled in the mud by the pig stampede caused by my singing. Heck's Angles, who were doing security, couldn't even stop 'em. Nobody got hurt, but there was pigshit everywhere. It just don't do to have a song with the chorus being "SOOOOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! PIGPIGPIG!!" I guess. You, on the other hand, have hit the bigtime. |
Subject: RE: BS: I have hit the bigtime. From: Jeri Date: 26 Apr 09 - 02:46 PM It sounds a bit Byrdsish, and I do like the song. I don't understand a lot of it, probably because I was only a kid (my parents wouldn't drive me to Woodstock) in the 60s and have never actually tried hallucinogenics (did I mention my parents wouldn't drive me to Woodstock?). (Note to self: find tambourine to bring to Apple Hollow.) Anyway, cool! |
Subject: RE: BS: I have hit the bigtime. From: bobad Date: 26 Apr 09 - 03:16 PM Here are the lyrics to the song, another version of which can be heard here:http://www.garagehangover.com/mp3s4/RestlessFeelinsHeyMamaYouveBeenonMyMind.mp3 Hey Mama, You've Been On My Mind When you wake up in the morning and the bold centurion Comes through the dawn to say she's gone And loneliness is draped in flames designed to drive you blind Hey Mama you've been on my mind Ah noiselessly the memory does spiral spins Around the vision crowning all the sound To see the golden goddess settling down the line Hey Mama you've been on my mind And the yellow hair reflecting all the shadows From the dreams that scream extremes solve all it seems But there exist no pathways to leave the past behind Hey Mama you've been on my mind Hey Mama you've been on my mind Ah the ship rests in the harbour but the ship ain't got no sail, Besides the sail ain't got no gale And the portrait scene is waiting to be taken by the tide Hey Mama you've been on my mind Hey Mama you've been on my mind |
Subject: RE: BS: I have hit the bigtime. From: Little Hawk Date: 26 Apr 09 - 05:22 PM Dylan also wrote a song called "Mama, You've Been On My Mind". It's got better lyrics than this one, although I'm not complaining about that...it just does, that's all. Joan Baez's recording of the Dylan song is probably the best known one out there. |

Subject: RE: BS: I have hit the bigtime. From: bobad Date: 27 Apr 09 - 07:31 AM The tune, by The Caravelles, has been re-released on a compilation series of 60s female singers called Dream Babes, it appears on Volume 5. This write up is from the music blog Stupid And Contagious: "First and foremost, this compilation is worth every penny to finally hear The Caravelles 1967 single Hey Mama You've Been on My Mind. I'd been making do with a muddy cd-r copy of this incredible Spectorian folk rock gem. The Caravelles are best known for their early 1960s hit You Don't Have To Be A Baby To Cry. I'd been dying to hear the highly sought after Hey Mama You've Been on My Mind for as long as I can remember, and to finally hear it in crystal clear cd sound is awe inspiring. Not to be confused with the Dylan tune Mama, You Been on My Mind, The Caravelles' song was probably inspired by a similar Dylanesque vision, but doesn't ape him at all. It's a soaring, wonderful piece of folk pop." |

Subject: RE: BS: I have hit the bigtime. From: Donuel Date: 27 Apr 09 - 10:19 AM OK bobad lets see, your royalty of $44 over 44 years with interest at ~4.4% compounded quarter annually would come to... Well you could buy a block of homes in Flint Michigan in todays market. Fun sound! |

Subject: RE: BS: I have hit the bigtime. From: Beer Date: 27 Apr 09 - 09:01 PM Bobad, Do you know if Bruce is given credit for writing the song anywhere on their vinyl? Maybe it was mentioned somewhere and I missed it. Adrien |
