Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music Online - Key word: "Mudcatter" From: Genie Date: 04 Sep 09 - 09:14 AM I have a YouTube channel that I initially set up for posting videos from my retirement home gigs (in lieu of sending demo CDs to activity directors or wasting time and money on auditions for these very low-paying gigs). Many of the videos there are not folk music, and some aren't even music, but the ones I think fellow Mudcatters or other folkies would find of interest can be found simply by searching for: "Mudcatter" or "FSGW Getaway" or "Singtime Frolics" In those categories, the videos are all music (except for a poem or two), and they are of many different performers. I have tried to use the tag "Mudcatter" for all the videos of people that are Mudcat members. (The tag "Mudcat" is way too widely used and will get you 20 pages of mostly unrelated stuff.) I encourage other Mudcatters to also use that term as a key word, to help others find the pages if we don't remember how else to find them. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music Online - PermaThread From: Genie Date: 04 Sep 09 - 06:54 PM YouTube's indexing by key words seems to be taking its time and, as usual, acting a bit quirky. (I fail to see how and why a lot of items pop up that seemingly have no connection to the categories and key words I specify in my searches, but USUALLY the ones that are relevant do eventually show up, even if it takes a while.) As of now, about 20 of my "Mudcatter"-designated videos will pop up when you type in that key word. I am hoping within a day or two they will all be listed when anyone searches for "Mudcatter." The key words "FSGW Getaway" and "Singtime Frolics" seem to bring up all of my videos that were keyed that way. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music Online - PermaThread From: SharonA Date: 04 Sep 09 - 11:54 PM I've got hardly anything online (so far), but there are a couple of songs I can point folks to.... Here's my one-and-only YouTube clip. I was at a friend's house, and he was experimenting with his new software, so we shot the video in his living room. The "tripod" for the camera was a music stand on top of a coffee table. The sound was recorded independently of the video (you can see me nodding to a second friend in another room, handling the sound on computer, at the end of the video); the sound quality is pretty poor and the picture and sound are not in synch. We'd intended to add more tracks, including an instrumental solo, but never got around to it... hence the rhythm guitar without an instrumental lead after the second verse! So here it is, my original song about Barack Obama, written and recorded after the 2008 election but before his 2009 inauguration: "The White House Door" Then there's an audio-only track of another song I wrote... but the song needs a bit of explaining. It is a sequel to Hank Williams' "Jambalaya", featuring the same couple (the man, who speaks in the first person, and his "Yvonne"); the setting is in New Orleans but shortly after the couple had been caught in Hurricane Katrina. My song is written from the man's point of view (again in the first person) and is really intended to be performed by a man, so please bear that in mind while you hear me sing this demo of "Yvonne", recorded shortly after I'd written it in 2005. Both of these songs have been sung a bazillion times since (and the Obama song has been revised to a post-inauguration version), so I really ought to update those clips! If the URL's change, I will post the revisions on this thread. Thanks for listening! |
Subject: From: Genie Date: 05 Sep 09 - 04:31 PM I really do recommend adding that term, Mudcatter, to your list of key words at YT if you're a Mudcatter. "Mudcat" is virtually useless as a key word because it has too many other referents (e.g., catfish, marine dredging equipment, and a slew of comedians and blues musicians) and will 'dredge up' at least a few hundred videos. But "Mudcatter" - so far - seems to be a term no one uses but we 'catters. |

Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music Online - PermaThread From: Genie Date: 15 Dec 09 - 03:10 PM I have two original Christmas songs online at YouTube. None of the recordings are that great - just videos made with the built in mic and webcam on my MacBook in music programs I've done for retirement and assisted living communities or at church (using iMovie software). But they do let you hear the tunes and get the feel of the songs. The lyrics and chords to my song Raise Your Voices In The Song (Of Peace On Earth) is in the Mudcat Songbook. In this video - Raise Your Voices In The Song (Town Center Fountains, 2008) - the vocals are OK but the song seems a bit rushed. This one - Raise Your Voices In The Song (Park Shore ALF 12-2009) has the right rhythm and captures the feel of the song a lot better, the sound quality isn't that good. The song is supposed to have a descant (which my sister used to sing with me) but I have no recording of it yet. Maybe I can remedy that over Christmas. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music Online - PermaThread From: Genie Date: 15 Dec 09 - 03:15 PM The lyrics and chords to my song "Singin' With The Big Choir are also in the Mudcat Songbook, but with this song too, I haven't done a studio recording or even a really good audio using my cyber tools to get rid of distortion in some of the live recordings. (I hardly ever have the opportunity to do a good recording-sound check in these short retirement home gigs.) This video was done last Sunday when I sang the song at my church, with the choir and congregation helping on some backup parts. The mic/amp was set for speech, not singing, so the vocals could sound better but at least they don't seem distorted. Singin' With The Big Choir - Genie with MSPC choir Here are two other videos of that song (which I may take down if I get a better recording): Singin' With The Big Choir (Town Center Fountains, 2008) Singin' w The Big Choir (Park Shore ALF, 12-2009) ========================================== And here's a traditional song, to which I added a verse (about the tabby cat): The Friendly Beasts - Park Shore ALF 12-2009 |

To find them, just go to YouTube and search for "Mudcatter" and "Francy." One of them is Frank singing Jerry Rasmussen's "A Handful Of Songs." Subject: RE: Mudcatter Music Online - PermaThread From: Genie Date: 18 Aug 10 - 06:22 PM I have quite a few videos from the 2008 Getaway posted at YouTube and, as of a couple months ago, YT has the option of posting videos as "unlisted." Unlike the "private" designation that used to be their only alternative to "public," the unlisted designation does not restrict access to YT members. It just gives each video an unlisted URL which can be made available to as many people as you want. So now most of the Getaway videos I've posted at YT have "unlisted" URLs. (At least this is the case for those where I wasn't sure it was OK to make them "public.") These are the Mudcatters whose 2008 Getaway videos are now on my YouTube channel with "unlisted" URLS: ClaireBear Genie - 1 video, 1 video w audio from me Amos - 2 videos LeadFingers Lonesome EJ Bobert (Bobert's Blues Band - the on with Dani, Janie, Tinker, Jacqui, and other floozies) Jennifer Woods The Doo Wop Workshop (Shoop Shoop song) - Jacquie, Ken Schatz, and others Kathy Westra (Wallflower Waltz) Kendall and Jacqui Dick Levine (Let The Winds Blow High And Low) If you're one of these performers, please PM me and I'll send you the link - which you can make as public or keep as private as you like Genie |
