no recording available. Could be a 30s or 40s tune.

Your letter just reached me this morning
As much as you say we are through
But there's something that makes me still love you
I don't know why but I do

It seems it's the same old sad story
you have off times told me before
But somehow this time it seems different
You say that you love me no more

I can't understand little darling
Now that you've proved that it's true
There's something that makes me still love you
I just don't know why but I do

I know I could find many others
They meet me with a smile everyday
But never a one could replace you
I guess God just planned it that way

I'll answer your letter tomorrow
Returning the ring that you gave
But I'm keeping this picture that you gave me
I'll take it with me to my grave

Hi Gene,

More info might help. How do you know about this song? Where did you hear it? Is it a male or female singer? Do you have the tune for it? Is it a typical 30's or 40's popular tune, or a different style like country, etc.

I'm attempting to Google it but none of the phrases are coming up in songs of that era.

Helen

There are a few--very few--overlaps. However, it's from that era.

The song as posted by Gene could be sung to the tune of "Irene, Goodnight" which was composed by Huddie Ledbetter (Leadbelly) in 1932.

mp3 : Bill Boyd and the Cowboy Ramblers - I Just Don't Know Why But I Do

mp3 : Bill Boyd and the Cowboy Ramblers - I Just Don't Know Why But I Do

I Just Don't Know Why but I Do

RCA Victor 20-1888-B (Nettles Boyd) Bill Boyd and the Cowboy ramblers

If you listen to the mp3 sound file the lyrics are slightly different, and the verses are in a different order. But it appears to be the same song.

Enjoy!
Helen

On my tombstone I am planning to have engraved, "She Googled". :-)

I just tried as many lines of the lyrics as I could until I found the right song. The final success came with:

"I just don't know why but I do"

Using the line:

"I don't know why but I do"

gave the wrong song.

Google tip: use the double quotes around phrases, (but it doesn't work so well if even one word is incorrect) which was the problem here.

Helen, as Bill Boyd also sang, WAHOO....you nailed it...

the difference in the lyrics i posted was because it was performed
LIVE ... from an aging memory.... and the singer recalled neither the title or singer..

Many thanks...

Subject: Lyr Add: I DON'T KNOW WHY I JUST DO (Bill Boyd)
From: Gene
Date: 31 May 09 - 12:31 AM

here are the lyrics as i now understand them....

Note. 1st verse was missing on mp3.

I DON'T KNOW WHY I JUST DO
Recorded by Bill Boyd

Your letter just reached me this morning
As much as you say we are through
But there's something that makes me still love you
I don't know why but I do

It seems it's the same old sad story
You have oft times told me before
But somehow this time it is different
You say that you love me no more

I can't understand little darlin'
Now that you've proven untrue
There's something that makes me still love you
I just don't know why but I do

I know I could find many others
For they meet me with smiles everyday
But never a one can replace you
I guess God just planned it that way

You say you now love another
You say that our romance is through
I pray that you'll always be happy
I just don't know why but i do

I'll answer your letter tomorrow
Returning the ring that you gave
I'm keeping the picture that you sent me
I'll take it with me to my grave

Somewhere in a cold silent churchyard
Someday you may stand at my grave
Your thoughts may then wander back darlin'
To someone your love could have saved
[word thoughts unclear]

Goodbye good luck and may God bless you
In closing I'm telling you true
Though you've broken my heart I still love you
I just don't know why but i do

Glad to be of help, Gene.

I think the word "off" should be "oft" i.e. meaning "often".

"It seems it's the same old sad story
you have oft times told me before"

Peace, that's a different (and quite famous) torch song: "I Don't Know Why (I Just Do)" , words by Roy Turk, music by Fred E. Ahlert, from the film "Failthful in My Fashion" (1946). You can download the sheet music from the Levy:
click for PDF.
