Subject: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: john f weldon Date: 06 Jun 09 - 08:29 AM Are there mudcatters in the Halifax Nova Scotia area? My guess is yes, it seems like a pretty folky place, what the pirates and privateers and all. I'll be an Artiste-in-shed-residence at the Roberts Street Social Center and Anchor Archive Zine Library from end-of-June to July 10. I'm supposed to live in a shed a in back, and create a work of art, probably a short comic book. On July 6 (Monday), I'll be giving a screening and talk, with some of my NFB and post-NFB films. Venue not decided yet. So drop by & say hi, and/or come see the show. cheers jfw |

Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: Rapparee Date: 06 Jun 09 - 11:00 AM Will it smell of fish? That would lend a certain ambience to the presentation. |

Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: john f weldon Date: 06 Jun 09 - 12:07 PM Thanks, gnu. Mrrzy, I could shed some pounds, but I hope it won't be that arduous. It's all gonna be new to me, too.... |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: Skivee Date: 07 Jun 09 - 03:16 AM The place looks wonderfully quirky. I loved the hand drawn map |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: GUEST,guest john f weldon Date: 03 Jul 09 - 09:43 AM Yes, I'm in a cold damp shed in a cold damp Halifax, but this place is very quirky and amiable and weird social arty strange. Watched a backyard performance of light rock with people dancing in wicker costumes. Anyway, if yr in the Halifax area, this is my screening & chat: Wednesday July 8th at 7pm in the all-ages accessible CBC Radio Room, at 1599 South Park Street in Halifax. Do spread the word! |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: gnu Date: 03 Jul 09 - 10:44 AM John... be glad it's damp and cold... it could easily be hot and muggy. Easy to put more clothes on... not so easy the other way. Have fun! |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: Beer Date: 03 Jul 09 - 12:04 PM Must have been away as I missed this thread earlier. John as Gnu says "It could be hot and muggy". And if it is a fish shed it would be some stinky. Hope you'll be back for the festival. Beer (adrien) |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: GUEST Date: 03 Jul 09 - 12:23 PM Actually I am having fun, even tho I'm not used to the idea of this much damp air. The folks have been great and the fact that they have managed to put together this strange little social center, zine library, artist co-op & performance space is amazing. Strange that drivers don't try to run you down the way they do in Montreal. It would be quite a challenge to actually get run over here. |

Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: GUEST,guest john f weldon Date: 03 Jul 09 - 12:42 PM Great. Yes, even the Haligonians mentioned that it's been chillier than usual, but so is Montreal. I note that earlier I said July 6, but both date and place have changed several times, so, once again to make sure: Wednesday July 8th at 7pm in the all-ages accessible CBC Radio Room, at 1599 South Park Street in Halifax. Beer, yes, I'll be back for Apple Hollow, wouldn't miss that! |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: gnu Date: 03 Jul 09 - 03:09 PM You flying back to Montréal from Halifax, John? |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: GUEST,guest john f weldon Date: 03 Jul 09 - 03:31 PM drove here so i guess i'd better drive back. Drove so i could pass through Dorchester, where my ancestors are buried in the Pioneer Cemetary. Four generations of John Weldons, starting in 17-something. Quite creepy. |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: gnu Date: 03 Jul 09 - 05:59 PM When are you going past Moncton? I am really busy with work and some other stuff, but, I would like to shake your hand if I can swing it. |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: GUEST,guest john f weldon Date: 04 Jul 09 - 09:45 AM gnu... ...not sure, i'll keep in touch. |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: topical tom Date: 05 Jul 09 - 06:08 AM Sounds like a really fun project! And in a beautiful part of the country too! Good luck! May the creative muses do their duty! |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: GUEST,guest john f weldon Date: 06 Jul 09 - 04:15 PM I just heard myself described on Halifax CBC as having a twinkle in my eye. Cool. Unfortunately, they also said the Wed nite screening would 8 bucks. False! It is free! There will also be a chat about my comic books at the Roberts Steet Social Center (the only house on Roberts Street) on Thursday at 5:30 also free. This is one of the oddest and most interesting places in Halifax, definitely worth a visit at some point. cheers, see ya... |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: gnu Date: 06 Jul 09 - 04:43 PM Halifax was always a fun place for me. As a young man, it was all about the nightlife. Great Celtic music and bars and THOSE blondes and redheads with blue eyes and freckles... yes, a preponderence of them... much moreso than here in Moncton. Of course, as a young man chasing pussy in Moncton, the Acadian "element" was an appreciated factor. A different "look" and attitude from the much more staid English and Celtic lasses in Halifax. ahhhh... sorry... that was long ago and far away. I don't know art, but I know what I like. |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 06 Jul 09 - 09:01 PM I didn't see this thread until now. I was in Halifax the past few days but back home in Cape Breton now. I would have stopped by John. Fog and rain galore there though. All the best! Sandy |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: Beer Date: 06 Jul 09 - 09:08 PM Gnu. You brought back some fond memories. My first summer job was working at the Halifax Dockyards. I use to deliver mail for the navy. From office to office on to ships like the Bonny and down in the subs. I was 17 and man did I love that summer. John, I will introduce you to my sister and brother in law at the festival. They live just outside Halifax but are now visiting in St.Thomas Ontario until festival time. Ad. |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Jul 09 - 09:09 PM I hope you're enjoying yourself, John. I spent a delightful day in Halifax, but then chose to drive on and spend the night in a $20 motel room in Moncton. That was a mistake, but it was the only motel in Moncton that was open that late... -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: gnu Date: 07 Jul 09 - 06:06 AM Oh Joe! Not "The Midtown"! Tsk, tsk, tsk. Although, they did fix it up. I hear that even some of the hookers now wear makeup. |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: Beer Date: 07 Jul 09 - 07:15 AM I think that's the one Gnu. I remember having to prop a chair against the door to keep it closed. But when your traveling for a long spell in the dark and rainy weather you'll sleep just about anywhere. Ad. |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: gnu Date: 07 Jul 09 - 03:04 PM If you ever get to Goose Bay, Labrador, don't check out The Labrador Inn. One room I stayed in 32 years ago... I had to turn sideways to get between the 30 " wide and the 24" wide table. But, I could actually walk to the back wall between the end of the bed and the sink, turn and sit on the toilet at the end of the bed. The water bucket for the sink and toilet was under the sink. $60 a night. But, the 13" TV got CBC and CBAFT and the mosquito buffet was all-that-could-eat-you, no charge!, even for side orders of black flies and bite-no-seeums and sand fleas. Yes, there were screens in the windows, but not in the exterior doors which were kept open to get a breeze against the sweltering heat. Now, in Nain and in Makkovik, well! Makkovik... some other time... every time I think about the dynamite going off while I was napping I get a shiver.. not every day you bolt upright and see a toilet bowl rolling down the hall. (The powderman did not like the "hotel" owner and he was told, by mistake, that nobody was in the trailer when he fired.) BTW... I loathe seal... fried, stewed, whatever... and caribou stew ain't much better, especially when it's made with just caribou fat. Never stayed at The Midtown, but it sounds okay. Better than Davis Inlet (I never stayed there but my buddies did) where a chair ain't much good when someone is knockin on your door with an axe. |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: GUEST,guest john f weldon Date: 08 Jul 09 - 08:50 PM I won't claim that living in the shed was the most fun I've ever had, but the screening was a blast. Packed house, lovely, responsive audience, and I got to screen several post-retirement films to a theater audience for the first time, which was great. Thank you, Halifax! |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: gnu Date: 08 Jul 09 - 09:34 PM Great stuff! Good on ya! Hope we get a peek???? |
Subject: RE: BS: john f weldon in a halifax shed From: john f weldon Date: 16 Jul 09 - 01:16 PM Hi Gnu... If you're asking for a peek at the films, many are on-line here.... Buncha jfw films If it's the "shed adventure", I'll do up a photo-adventure-essay at some point. All very weird and sometimes fun too. Any other peeks, I dunno... jfw |
