Subject: Kaelan Paton Missing From: GUEST,Lisa Null Date: 17 Jun 09 - 09:18 AM Kaelan Paton, son of David Paton and grandson of Sandy and Caroline Paton, has disappeared in a tragic water accident just up river from the town of Falls Village CT. I have just talked to Caroline and am reposting a message from Kaelan's sister Linnea from Facebook: My little brother, Kaelan, is missing. Kaelan and his friends skipped school this morning to go to Toymaker's Cafe for breakfast and then would go to school late to catch the rest of their high school classes. Instead they biked to the Great Falls and went swimming. The water was high. Some how or another as far as I've heard - one of his friends was drowning. Kaelan went in again to rescue him. The other boys called 911. The fireman pulled two out of the river. But my brother is still missing - there have been search parties out all afternoon. We don't expect to find him alive if we find him at all. Your prayers and support for me and my family would be much appreciated at this time. Love, Linnea There is also more news on this sad story in the Republic-American (Waterbury) http://www.rep-am.com/News/420220.txt |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton Missing From: karen k Date: 17 Jun 09 - 10:28 AM Thanks Lisa for posting this. I spoke to Caroline, Linnea and David this morning. I just came on Mudcat to post this and am now glad that I did not have to do the initial posting. I'm going up to Sharon tomorrow morning. Was just there over the weekend at a Paton family reunion and spent some time with Kaelan in a good conversation just like I used to have with his dad as a teenager. Sandy told me in an e-mail last night that Kaelan went in first and got out. His friend went in and had trouble so Kaelan went in to help him and did but then he disappeared. The water was very high and wild. They never should have been there. Helping his friend was the kind of kid Kaelan was. I just don't have the words. Needless to say everyone is heartbroken and dealing with this senseless tragedy as best as can be expected. karen kobela |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton Missing - Sandy & Caroline's grandson From: Don Firth Date: 17 Jun 09 - 03:24 PM Sandy Paton was one of the first people I met when I became involved with folk music in Seattle back in the very early 1950s. Shortly thereafter Sandy left Seattle to ramble the world and become a major force in folk music. I have never had the honor of meeting Caroline or any of the young 'uns, but I did see Sandy again at the 1960 Berkeley Folk Festival where he was one of the featured performers. He introduced me to several well-known singers who were there. Even though we didn't know each other that long, I feel that he was a major force in the course of my musical life. I lost a nephew in a motorcycle accident a few years ago. Tim and a few friends were out one evening to enjoy a ride on a summer evening, when it all went wrong. So I have some idea of just how devastating this sort of thing can be to family and friends. My heart goes out to Kaelan's parents, to Sandy and Caroline, and to the rest of the family. There are just no words that are adequate. Don Firth |

I was devastated to receive an email from Sandy this morning, telling me about the tragedy. Kaelan was so full of promise--a really exceptional young man--articulate, intelligent, gentle, funny. I can't imagine anything worse than the sudden death of a young person. I called Caroline right after work today. Kaelan's body has not yet been recovered, but they are considering it a recovery mission, no longer a rescue. Some of the family had not yet left from the reunion & some are returning, so the Patons are not alone. My heart hurts. Barbara |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton Missing - Sandy & Caroline's grandson From: bbc Date: 18 Jun 09 - 07:13 AM Here are a few photos I took of Kaelan at the Paton family reunion on Saturday, June 13, 2009--3 days before his death. The young folks sat together & they had a great time. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mudder_bbc/sets/72157619803374081/ My favorite memory of Kaelan was an evening when he joined Sandy, Caroline, & me for dinner & a movie. He was in 5th grade then, the same age as my students. He & I had a lengthy discussion about literature. He was informed, articulate, fun! He recommended a fantasy series that I, subsequently, read & purchased for my library. Many of my students have enjoyed it & I like to tell them that I bought it on a young person's recommendation. What a terrible loss this is! Barbara |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton Missing - Sandy & Caroline's gran From: Big Mick Date: 18 Jun 09 - 12:10 PM I spent yesterday at the hospital with my Dad. I came home to find this and I am beyond grief stricken. As has been stated so eloquently by so many, to be a friend with these wonderful people is to be a part of a very large family of friends. Caroline and Sandy embrace you with loving arms and just pull you in. In my own case, they have become something we call "chosen family". I have sat in that wonderful house on Sharon Mountain, over a cup of coffee and watched Caroline dote on Linnea, and saw the pride in her eyes as she spoke of her grandkids. Knowing that this searing pain is something that they will have to bear, and that there is nothing that those of us who love them can do to ease it, is one of the worst feelings ever. What I can say to, beloved "chosen family" is that I share your grief, and you are in my constant and loving thoughts and prayers. David, and family, I have always said I can tell a great deal about people by the children they raise. In the case of your parents and grandparents, it is clear they have raised exceptional children and grandkids. Look to the love they have given you for the strength you will need in the coming days, weeks, and months. And know that you carry with you the love and sympathy of all of us that your family has touched. Mick Lane |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton Missing - Sandy & Caroline's grandson From: ClaireBear Date: 18 Jun 09 - 12:46 PM My heartfelt condolences. Prayers flutter on the breeze from California to you. May they bring a tiny spark of comfort. Claire P.S. This passage has helped me though some difficult times, although I have never had times as difficult as yours: "The death of each of us is in the order of things: It follows life as surely as night follows day. We can take The Tree of Life as a symbol. The human race is the trunk and branches of this tree, and individual men and women are the leaves, which appear one season, flourish for a summer, and then die. I too am a leaf of this tree and one day I shall be torn off by a storm, or simply decay and fall — and become part of the earth about its roots. "But, while I live, I am conscious of the tree's flowing sap and steadfast strength. Deep down in my consciousness is the consciousness of a collective life, a life of which I am a part, and to which I make a minute — but unique — contribution. When I die and fall the tree remains, nourished to some small degree by my manifestation of life. Millions of leaves have preceded me and millions will follow me: but the tree itself grows and endures." — Herbert Read |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton Missing - Sandy & Caroline's grandson From: frogprince Date: 18 Jun 09 - 02:56 PM With my background, I still at times think of God as a loving Father figure. At numerous times thru life, when I've seen someone suffer a loss like this, I've heard someone say, "God must have had a reason". My mind forms a different picture. I see God greeting Kaelan with open arms, saying "Kaelan, I'm so proud of you for what you did; but I'm so sorry that this took you from your family and friends much too soon." I'm so sorry, and I know you will miss Kaelan with all your hearts. Dean Elkins, in Michigan. |
Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton Missing - Sandy & Caroline's grandson From: Duane D. Date: 18 Jun 09 - 03:04 PM I was in northern NJ yesterday when bbc phoned me to tell me this sad news. My heart has been sick and sad ever since. I share the sadness and sense of loss with the Paton family. bbc and I attended the Paton family reunion dinner on June 13, 2009, as guests of Sandy and Caroline. While there we took many digital images. I looked through all of mine last night and found ten of Kaelan. I added these into a set on my flickr gallery for the Paton family and friends and it may be viewed here. |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton Missing - Sandy & Caroline's grandson From: GUEST,The Bristow Family Date: 18 Jun 09 - 03:32 PM A Child is born to shine their light. Kaelan's shown brighter than most. I had the privilege of knowing Kaelan as my son was a good friend of his. He brightened not only the room but each soul with his smile and his joy. Fate works in strange ways and I must say I am baffled as to her reasons. He must have a greater purpose in a better place than here. "...Though we may stand on the shore and wave a tearful farewell, murmuring there...there he's gone. Know there are others, on a distant shore, who are waiting...watching, hopefull to raise the cheer, there...there he comes!..." Our hearts are with you and with Kaelan Karen Bristow |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton Missing - Sandy & Caroline's grandson From: katlaughing Date: 19 Jun 09 - 10:12 AM Brave youth can bring such courage which brings such sorrow with never a thought for themselves. Many years ago, I knew a family who lost three sons in a matter of minutes as they went to rescue each other from the Colorado River. Somehow their family did carry on, for many years and they were well remembered and loved. I can just *see* Sandy and Caroline's spirits in those photos of Kaelan; there is a gleam in his eye and it looks as though a smile came easily and lit up his whole being when it did. Sometimes, those bright spirits burn out too quickly by our estimation. SandyGramps, thank you for taking the time to post and please do not feel any onus to do so any time soon...take care of yourselves and just know we are here for you. luvyaKat'leen |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton Missing - Sandy & Caroline's grandson From: bbc Date: 20 Jun 09 - 08:01 AM Hi, folks, Duane & I shared hugs, tears, & chat with Sandy & Caroline last evening. To date, Kaelan's body has not been found. Sandy & Caroline are bearing up, but this will be a long, long haul. Kaelan leaves a hole in the life of his loved ones that, although, over time, may hurt less intensely, will never be filled. He was such a special person. To die, at fifteen, with so much potential unfulfilled is a crushing blow. Your love, thoughts, prayers, & good wishes are deeply appreciated. The phone may not be answered, but Sandy is sitting at his computer, reading. To communicate with Caroline, letters might be more appropriate. love, Barbara |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton Missing - Sandy & Caroline's gran From: Michael S Date: 20 Jun 09 - 05:39 PM I had held back from adding to this thread. I didn't know Sandy and Caroline, and didn't know Kaelan and his parents. I talked to Sandy and Caroline once, many years ago. It was a formal context, an interview. They were very friendly, but I know it's not a very personal connection. Then I found myself checking in here frequently to see if searchers had found Kaelan. I have two teenagers. My daughter is Kaelan's age, and also just completed the 9th grade. There's a kinship among everyone who loves someone else deeply, and eventually it seemed OK to me to express my sorrow. So, finally, I came here, as so many others did. I am so sorry and I hope that there is peace and acceptance at the end of grieving. My thoughts are with this family, that has offered so much. Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton Missing - Sandy & Caroline's grandson From: GUEST,Norma - Frankie's Grandma Date: 22 Jun 09 - 12:25 AM I am the Grandmother of Frankie, the friend whose life was saved by Kaelan. I can not really put into words how we feel. When my daughter called me from the Hospital, she was so hysterical, I could not understand her. However, I did hear her screaming "Frankie's all right! Frankie's all right!" I felt a cold chill roll over me, then relief..but then she screamed: "Kaelan is lost! Frankie is asking for Kaelan..he said he was there, and then he was gone!" The cold chill returned, and it remains with me. As I understand it - and no one is exactly clear about it, Frankie was being swept by the current, and Kaelan ran ahead to some rocks, and extended his hand. Frankie grasped it, but the current was too strong for him to get out. Kaelan jumped in, and pushed Frankie to a rock, which he grabbed. He was losing his grip, and worked his way into a crevice by the rock, and turned around for Kaelan, but Kaelan was gone... The joy of having Frankie still with us is so strong, but at the same time, it is so painful to even try to imagine the anguish you all must be feeling...I have tried to do so, but the prospect of even trying to imagine it is more painful than I can bear to go to at this time. All I can say is that Kaelan is and always will be such a hero to Frankie and all of us - he is devastated by Kaelan's loss, and I know he thinks of it all the time - as do I. This is a loss of such magnitude; it brings a pall over everyone and everything. I have asked all my friends for their thoughts and prayers on behalf of Kaelan Paton, a hero to whom all of us owe such a great debt. God Bless him. We are still praying for a miracle... Kaelan gave one to us...His memory will be with us forever... |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton Missing - Sandy & Caroline's gran From: Janie Date: 22 Jun 09 - 12:50 AM Dear Norma, I hope you (as well as Frankie and the rest of your family) know deep in your hearts that it is not only possible, it is absolutely OK to rejoice that one was spared, even while you grieve that one was lost. The relief that Frankie lives is a separate emotion from grief of the tragic loss of Kaelan. Frankie did not intend to put himself in danger, nor did Kaelan. This was an awful accident, but an accident, nonetheless. None of the boys would have gone into the water initially, or to rescue one another, if they had thought there was serious risk that any of them would be injured or would die. My heart aches for all of you. I have a 15 year old son that I realize could be Frankie or Kaelan. May all who love all of these children know they are surrounded by light and love, and find some measure of comfort in the midst of profound sorrow. Janie |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton Missing - Sandy & Caroline's grandson From: GUEST,Guest: Lisa Null Date: 22 Jun 09 - 01:32 AM Sandy: As you know, I have spoken with Caroline and we will talk ourselves in time. It is not easy for me to put in words what I feel. I remember a few minutes of stolen serenity on a bench outside in early May as people sang and plunked in the distance. You were the chauffeur bringing one of your grandchildren somewhere or other or perhaps picking him or her up...I took it for granted. I have watched your grandchildren grow, knowing they were enriched by not just one but two generations of love and care. This is so rare and so important. You and Caroline have given them the very best of yourselves. Kaelan's time was short, and it doesn't feel long enough, ripe enough... but he was the best he could be while it lasted, and you helped see to that. Take pride that you gave him so much and that he grew up as well as he did. I lost my brother when he was just a few years older than Kaelan-- this is not something one ever gets over. All I can say is I love you like my own family and that some of the most beautiful flowers bloom but for a short time. |
Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton Missing - Sandy & Caroline's grandson From: bbc Date: 22 Jun 09 - 07:04 AM Norma, Thank you so much for writing! Most of us know little of what really happened that day & your post helped me to understand. I agree with everything that Janie wrote. There is & should be joy that Frankie was saved; may he savor a long, full life! I think that times like this serve to remind us to hold our loved ones near & to recognize that we just get one day at a time; life is precious! Lisa, I am sorry for your loss. Growing up, I lost a close friend to a motorcycle crash the weekend after school closed. As trite as it sounds, our best part is to just love each other through these times--making ourselves available to hug, to listen, to show that we are with those who grieve. best, Barbara |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton Missing - Sandy & Caroline's grandson From: Naemanson Date: 22 Jun 09 - 09:46 AM In December we lost a student at school. He was one of my students, very personable with a great future. His loss tore out my heart. About halfway through the next quarter one of his friends told me they had been together in the surf on kayaks and then he was gone. They never found him. The friend commented that he wanted to go into the surf to find him but that the other people on the beach wouldn't let him go. I told him that Jerod would not have wanted him to risk his life that way. Then, in March, one of the members of my Academic Challenge Bowl team went on a church outing to Tarzan Falls. Apparently he slipped on the rocks, hit his head, and was gone before anyone saw anything. They did eventually find him but it was too late. I will never forget this school year. It has been the most difficult, emotionally, that I can imagine. I have spoken with veteran teachers who tell me they have never experienced anything like this and hope they never will. All this is the long way of saying that I hope someone remembers to comfort Kaelan's teachers, mentors, friends, and anyone else who him in their hearts. He sounds like he was a great kid, as special as those two were to me. I hope they can find their own peace. And Sandy and Caroline, I am still thinking of you and hoping for the best for you and for Kaelan's parents. |
Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton Missing - Sandy & Caroline's gran From: Big Mick Date: 22 Jun 09 - 10:08 AM Norma's post touches me deeply. We are but a week or so short of the one year anniversary of the accident that my daughter survived and her best friend did not. I know in an all too familiar way the awful pull of conflicting emotion. Frankie needs support and understanding so that he gets that this was simply an accident. Mick |
Subject: Abrazos: Kaelan Paton Missing - From: wysiwyg Date: 22 Jun 09 - 10:55 AM Norma, My husband and I do a fair bit of pastoral counseling and crisis ministry, and it is from this context I share the following. It sounds to me like Frankie is still in the shock phase of processing what occurred, and that right now he has not yet started the phase more commonly known as survivor's guilt. Processing and healing from that (through that) will almost certainly be an issue to address, thoguh just companioning him as he lives and addresses present-time is most important now. In companioning, caring adults can help implant the knowledge that Kaelan, his good friend, gave his life not "in vain" but would, as a good friend, certainly want to celebrate all the wonderful things Frankie will experience as his life unfolds-- from what I have heard about Kaelan, and from what we know of youth in general, I would bet that he would want Frankie to embrace life and "make him proud." Kids that age make huge use of "sideways" wisdom; wisdom offered in relaxed understatement provokes thought, as opposed to the type of insistent agree-with-me communication "middler" adults so often offer instead "for their own good." This is exactly the type of wisdom a grandparent is so often in a position to offer-- our maturity lends a bit of credibility to young people searching not for answers, but for promising clues they can investigate for themselves. I celebrate all that Kaelan's grandparents gave to nourish that young man, and I celebrate how you will continue to nourish your young Frankie. Abrazos, ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton Missing - Sandy & Caroline's gran From: Sandy Paton Date: 22 Jun 09 - 03:18 PM Thank you so much, Norma. Your story of what happened is exactly as one of the other boys gave it to us, and, apparently, to Jim Moore, who wrote the fine articles in the Waterbury Republican-American. We're grieving, of course, but proudly, knowing that he did what he did to help Frankie, knowing the danger involved. He was a wonderful young man, and such a great grandson to Caroline and me. Thank you for sharing a little of his greatness with our friends on the Mudcat Forum. That was very thoughtful of you. Sandy Paton |

If there's any comfort to be had in this poem/song I wrote, please read it with the love intended. Not Mine For Long Barbara Shaw, 2004 Not mine for long, I always knew Those two bright cheeks and smiling eyes So wise, so piercing to my soul Would one day grow forever old And move beyond my range of view. In little steps in little ways The days went by and I was sure Those pure and joyful times would fly And one day we would say goodbye And move on to the coming phase. Moving out to change the world To learn and play and push the edge To jump the hedge of home and heart And find new routes and roads to start To view the tapestry unfurled. Becoming person of the earth Whose worth is yet to be displayed Who stayed not longer than a flash With us whose memories are ash That rose in triumph at the birth. Moving out and quickly gone Drawn to the ultimate design Not mine for long, I always knew Yet mine forever, always true Moving out and moving on. |

My deepest condolences to the Pattons. There's a song written by Dave Carter titled "When I Go", The last verse has always provided a little comfort. Sigh mournful sister, whisper & turn, I will rattle like dry leaves when I go, Stand in the mist where my fire used to burn, I will camp on the night breeze when I go, & Should you glimpse my wandering form out on the boarderline, Between death & resurrection,& the council of the pines, Do not worry for my comfort,do not sorrow for me so, All your diamond tears will rise up & adorn the sky beside me when I go. Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton-Sandy & Caroline's grdson(body fo From: GUEST,nomi solo Date: 23 Jun 09 - 09:36 PM dear sandy and caroline, a hero's death, we can never be prepared for such sadness. our daughter reminded us of a small memorial in london england called postman's park. This memorial began with an idea by g.f. watts who in 1887 wrote to the "Times" proposing a project to mark the queen's jubilee. he stated it would be of national interest to collect a complete record of the stories of heroism in every-day life. though his idea was not taken up officially, he himself commemorated the actions by erecting this park, a 50 foot long gallery with a tiled roof. here are engraved on tiles names of many youths who gave their lives in heroic actions. may we all remember kaelan, with or without a tile, but in our hearts and our actions. with loving sympathy nomi and dick solo |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton-Sandy & Caroline's grdson(body fo From: Janie Date: 23 Jun 09 - 10:09 PM Wish I had words of wisdom and solace, but I don't. I don't know how you as parents and grandparents live with the blinding pain of such startling and unimaginable loss - except that somehow you do - because regardless of the pain, you wake in the morning. The heart beats, unbidden. The breath breathes, even in those times that hit literally like a knife in the gut, and you think that you just can not bear it. Those times when the imagination runs wild, then you realize you have to reel it in. For what it is worth, remember this. It is true regardless of spiritual belief or the lack there of. Kaelan is free from all suffering. Whether he is in a "better place", or dwells now only in your hearts, he is OK. Free of pain. Free of suffering. Remember that. Remember that he abides always in your hearts and memories. Remember that he lives on in every life that he touched, in every memory that anyone has of him. We are as shaped and influenced by the young as much as by the old. If in no other way, each of us is immortal in that the effect of our lives on others does indeed ripple out in wider and wider circles, and down through generations. I don't know you, Sandy and Caroline. I only know who you are, and doubt seriously that you recall me from our brief introductions at a Getaway. Regardless, the simple act of reading this thread, contemplating your loss, reading the posts of those who do know you, your family, and Kaelan, changes and influences me, as it does everyone who reads here. Kaelan lives on, even in someone like me, who never knew him at all. Nothing that I write here can touch your pain and loss, but in the event it brings some measure of comfort in the midst of your terrible pain in the time ahead, I wanted to share these thoughts. Janie |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton-Sandy & Caroline's grdson(body found) From: Ebbie Date: 24 Jun 09 - 03:36 PM This sentiments of this song were a comfort to my sister when her daughter died. May it help just a little bit now. Alive and Well Ebbie I heard my mother as she lay dying speak of winged angels that fears dispelled And though in sorrow my heart is crying I know her spirit is alive and well For as sure as the bright sun and the stars above me As sure as stories that people tell I know the spirit that's giving and loving I know it will always be alive and well Oh, I know it will always be alive and well Though loved ones' passing may leave me lonely As one by one they heed that bell Still I'll remember one glad thought only: I know their spirits are alive and well When breath forsakes me and none can hold me (And when that may be, no tongue can tell) And though my heart cease, that will set my soul free And I know that I'll always be alive and well. |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton-Sandy & Caroline's grdson(body found) From: GUEST Date: 24 Jun 09 - 10:27 PM Many years ago, one of my first influences of traditional music came from a lovely album I rescued from a library sale in my new home near Chapel Hill NC. I learned a song from it, and brought it to my first Getaway, not brave enough to sing in front of people, but hoping to hear it. Where the first workshop I went to was led by Caroline Paton, who of course already knew the song because it was a Folk-Legacy album. Naturally. And as you can imagine, she gracefully encouraged me to sing it. Tonight I met with a group of people with whom I now often sing, mostly traditional music. We sang song after song of love and devotion, and redemption, the here and the hereafter. I though how different and difficult, and at the same time how amazingly healing the music will be for you, Caroline, and for Sandy, and for all the people you love. Don't ever lose sight of the power and beauty you have brought to the world, including but not exclusively that of your beautiful grandson. All the sorrow and sadness cannot erase one speck of the grace, and love you have wrought, and which surrounds you tonight. I sang this for you all tonight, sending love: _____________________ We'll camp a little while in the wilderness in the wilderness in the wilderness We'll camp a little while in the wilderness then we'll be going home Then we'll be going home, oh! we'll be going home We'll camp a little while in the wilderness then we'll be going home. ____________________________________ Dani |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton-Sandy & Caroline's grdson(body found) From: bbc Date: 25 Jun 09 - 09:27 PM Yes, Susan. A memorial, open to all, is planned for Sunday, July 12th at Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village, CT, from 1-7 pm. It will start with a memorial service & then progress to a song circle, a vegetarian potluck meal (in memory of Kaelan), & a contra dance. Kaelan's dad, David, hopes that this may become an annual event, in Kaelan's memory. Duane & I visited Sandy & Caroline today & helped get some cds ready for the Old Songs Festival. We saw David today for the first time since Kaelan's death. Naturally, he & his folks are still actively grieving. It was good to be with them. A non-profit fund has been established to help with the family's expenses at this time (Simple cremation costs more than $2,000). If you wish to contribute, checks can be made out to "Kaelan Paton Memorial Fund" & can be mailed "Care of" Sandy & Caroline Paton, Folk-Legacy Records, Box 1148, Sharon, CT 06069. Buying music from Folk Legacy, either online or at the Old Songs Festival, will also help out. best, Barbara

Sandy and Caroline, I do wish that I could be there to offer you hugs. All I can offer is my deepest love for you both. Pamela |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton(Sandy&Caroline)Memorial July 12 From: GUEST,Bruce Pratt Date: 07 Jul 09 - 08:09 AM Dear Patons. Janet and I were out of the country and I only learned of your loss a few days ago. I am heart-scalded, as I know of no family who more loves rivers. I recall a conversation with Sandy--I think it was at a Folk Next Door Concert--about our mutual love for songs about rivers and for the peace one gains from watching them run. David's love of paddling and your clan's respect for the beautiful waterways of this land make this tragedy all the more searing. As the father of a firefighter/legislator/whitewater guide, my respect for what Kaelan did to save others knows no bounds. There is no greater love nor courage than to imperil your own life to save and serve others. I regret that I cannot attend the memorial, but my grateful heart will be there. May songs and friends give you strength. Bruce |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton(Sandy&Caroline)Memorial July 12 From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 13 Jul 09 - 10:52 AM Today my wife Ruth and I are swinging into what passes for a normal day around here. But, it's not just another day. Yesterday we drov e up to Sharon for Kealan's memorial service. Over the years, I've become somewhat of an unintended funeral attender. I sing with the Men's Chorus in my church and as often as possible, I go to funerals at our church and sing with the choir. When my gospel quartet was still active, we often sang a home-going ceremonies, Christian and even Jewish. My two son-in-laws are Muslim and we've attended their funeral services as well. All that said, I thought the memorial service for Kaelan was the most beautiful I've ever attended. Even though the service was held in a school auditorium and many of the people in attendance aren't church-goers, we had church yesterday. At least my definition of church. There was great crying at times and great joy, as well. When a wonderful black woman sang I'll Fly Away and people locked arms and swayed to the music as they sang along, it felt like they could leviate the building. The testimonies were extremely moving, and filled with warm humor. Caroline sang a musical setting for the familiar reading that St. Paul wrote in 1st Corinthinas, her voice quavering with emotion, but strong, and the whole service was moving blend of testimony, poetry and song. Letters were read from Sandy to his grandson, and David to his son, as well as from several other family members. After the service, we gathered in the cafeteria for a vegetarian buffet with a dangerous, long, long table of deserts. It was a time for me to see many friends I've not seen for years including Ed Trickett, Sally Rogers, Dalas Cline, Bill and Andy Spence, George Ward, Patricia Campbell, Karen Kobela, Priscilla Herdman and countless others. We must be getting old. We get together at funerals. Sunday was a beautiful bookend to a very spiritual weekend. Jerry I'm posting this message on the Kitchen Table thread too for those who might miss it here. |

Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton(Sandy&Caroline)Memorial July 12 From: GUEST,Guest, David Jones Date: 13 Jul 09 - 08:28 PM The incredible gathering in the packed auditorium said it all. So many, young and old, all there for Kaelan and his family. The service was very moving, Caroline sang as beautifully as she has ever sung, David was magnificent, and Sandy hung in there, God bless him. A letter from Frankies grandmother was read, she must be a remarkable woman. Sisters, Aunts and Uncles were there and so many old friends, Ed Trickett came in from Chicago, it was great to see him, he sang "Gently down the stream of time". I told my neighbor about Kaelan, he told me of something from the Talmud, not quite sure what the Talmud is, but it says, "He who saves one life, saves the world". Hope the service helped and brought some peace to the family and friends of Kaelan. |

I've been out of the loop for a while and it wasn't utill Susan brought this to my attention that I learned of the trajedy. My heart goes out to you. Subject: RE: Kaelan Paton(Sandy&Caroline)Memorial July 12 From: GUEST,Bobbe Rose (formerly Garovoy) Date: 30 Jul 09 - 02:23 AM My son Aaron just told me today about your family losing David's son Kaelan. It has been many years since I have seen all of you. My remembrances of the Paton's are of a close-knit and loving family. From what I have read about Kaelan, it seems that he made a positive impression on all that knew him, he was brave, loyal and loving as well. Such a tremendous loss for you and all who knew him. How fortunate for the world to have had him in it. I wish your entire family peace. Sadness flies on the wings of the morning, and out of the heart of darkness comes the light. - Jean Giraudoux |
