From: GUEST,David

Hi Folks,

Hard times mean I have to sell my beautiful, old English Concertina. Has anyone got any suggestions about a good place to sell?

Thanks,
David

I'm based in London, UK. Thanks for the concertina.net link. Is that an American site?

Postage costs to the US would be pretty massive for any buyer there, but perhaps people in the States are the only people who can afford it these days! Hmm...

eBay is one option... but there could be someone here on Mudcat who will give a fair price.

Tell us what you've got!

If you go to a festiaval, take it to more than one dealer, and always mention. a) what you want for it. Be optimistic. b) your best offer so far.

There's a bloke in Stoke-on-Trent called Chris Algar who buys and sells and will give you a fair price. I'll try to find his details and pm you -it's getting late now. Julia bought her concertina from him a number of years back.

Google for Barleycorn Concertinas, and you will find the internet location of Chris Algar's business ... it's the first hit that comes up. (Sorry, haven't got the link to hand). You can sell to interested parties via the Buy and Sell forum on concertina.net as well, normally donating a percentage of sale price for anything you manage to sell through the group.

Finding out exactly what you have is the first step. Figuring out how to describe it correctly (and as fully as possible) is the second. Ebay is checked out worldwide by people seeking good instruments, but obviously they have to be convinced by the description (and pictures) you supply. Even if you don't end up selling there, its worth a look to see what similar instruments are fetching. Hobgoblin are also worth a look for that, and they have a branch in London which might be worth a visit fotr their opinion of your instrument (bear in mind that any dealer will only be offering a price at which he still expects to make a profit).

"...the EC is fairly popular in Scotland..."

Must be about the only English anything which is popular north of the border!
