Hi! I'm soon heading for Oban in Scotland for a while, and I thought that I might pick up some recordings of Scotch Music while there. Are there any shops in or near Oban selling used/new records?
Thanks.

Alex

I found a copy of A Song For Every Season at Oxfam there once.
Not Scotch, obviously, but I did get a bottle of that from a distillery shop on Mull.

Robin Laing has done a whole CD of Scotch music, well worth checking out ...

I was at a family wedding in Oban yesterday and saw Oban Music across from the hotel (The Royal in the square). It appears to carry CDs as well as instruments and accessories.

Scotch music is when they all get pissed on Whisky and do a carry oot.

If you have important things to do the next day Alex, I wouldn't go to one of those. I used to love em when I was in Scotland.

Try Glasgow. I never noticed any interesting record shop in Oban.

Alan Warner's "Morvern Callar" is a great evocation of what the place is like. You can see his characters walking round the streets every day.

Like one earlier poster said, Oxfam is about as good as it gets.

Don't listen to they Phillistines. I'm pretty sure
Oban Music and Books was around a few years ago, last time I passed through on the way to Mull, and had a good selection of music. Almost all the tourist trap shops have something interesting amongst the dross.

Tobermory on Mull used to have an exccellent CD shop on Back Brae, now converted to a holiday cottage. Tackle and Books would now be your best bet there (say hello to Jane from me), or if you get down to Fionnphort on a day-trip to Iona (all accessible from Oban), the Post Office has a good selection of CDs and books. This is serious tourist country, and even the smallest shops (and the Cal-Mac ferries!)try to provide something you might want to take away. Pubs will sometimes have Cds of their local favourites.

Ross

If I remember rightly, Oban Music and Books on George Street, and another one somewhere near the ferry terminal. Also Fionnphort as suggested above.
