Subject: Lyr/Tune Add: LILLY DALE (H. S. Thompson) From: Lesley N. Date: 12 Jul 99 - 08:18 AM Here's a tune I just added to my site - didn't find it in a forum or database search so here 'tis. It was written by H. S. Thompson. The tune was popular America in the 1850s and played in concerts and dance halls. If anyone has any information as to who H.S. Thompson was I'd be grateful!
'Twas a calm, still night, MIDI file: ldale.mid Timebase: 120 Name: Lily Dale This program is worth the effort of learning it. To download the March 10 MIDItext 98 software and get instructions on how to use it click here ABC format: X:1 |

Subject: RE: LYR and TUNE ADD: Lilly Dale From: Lesley N. Date: 12 Jul 99 - 12:34 PM Rewritten I'll say! I wish I were musically inclined and could figure out if the tunes are similar. I can fit the words of the verses into the Agay tune but am not creative enough with chorus! |
Subject: RE: LYR and TUNE ADD: Lilly Dale From: Dale Rose Date: 14 Jul 99 - 12:21 AM I ran a check on H S Thompson at Levy and found 13 entries, including several for Lily Dale. The only other song I recognized was Cousin Jedediah from 1863, which some young friends perform on occasion. I turned up three more at LOC, and came up empty at Duke, though there were quite a number when I just used Thompson. A ProFusion search was complicated by the similarity to Hunter S. Thompson. I don't have a trip to Mountain View planned at the moment, but I will try to add this to my list of things to remember when I do go. |
Subject: RE: LYR and TUNE ADD: Lilly Dale From: Dale Rose Date: 14 Jul 99 - 12:48 AM I found this: Far Above Cayuga's Waters ~~ Lyrics written by Weeks and Smith (circa 1875) to the tune of an existing song Annie Lisle. Annie Lisle was written by a Boston musician H. S. Thompson in 1857. That may be a lead, possibly someone at Cornell knows more. Don't know if you located it or not, but UNC Chapel Hill has a copy of Lily Dale at http://cadmus.lib.unc.edu/music/white1/white1.htm It is superior in quality to the Levy files, but a whole lot harder to find. |
Subject: RE: LYR and TUNE ADD: Lilly Dale From: Lesley N. Date: 14 Jul 99 - 06:50 PM Ah, I didn't think about checking those sites. Course I'm used to doing much older music than this and they don't usually help me with information there. I appreciate the pointers! Thanks.
