This will be my 31st consecutive Getaway...I KNOW there are a few with more total, and probably a couple with more consecutive. Mudcat has sure opened it wide and brought us things we never dreamed of...

Who are the invited guests this year, if it's aceptable to ask?

"The Program Committee -- Carly Gewirz (Mudcatter "Carly"), Lorraine Van Buren (Mudcatter "Lorraine"), long-time FSGW member and Getaway-goer Kathie Mack, and I -- have been working on a fine lineup of invited guests. So far we have confirmed Jon Bartlett & Rika Ruebsaat, Joy Bennett & Chris Koldewey, Pete the Spy, Ed Norman, Molly Andrews, and Steve Cormier, and we're working on a couple more"

In response to Jon from the other thread: Thanks for your generous welcome. You are too kind. The treat will really be mine, hearing you again and so many other stellar singers. Looking forward to it with great anticipation.

When will the registration form be available? Or am I missing something on the FSGW site. I'm hoping to get my plane tickets today or tomorrow and don't want to blow it with the reg form.

Cheers,

David

The registration form will probably be ready in a week or so. FIrst it needs to get printed in the FSGW newsletter, which has gone to the printer. There's a .pdf version which then becomes available on-line to FSGW members, and we can extract the Getaway Registration form from there.

For me, there is nothing more important than the Getaway.
I just got a picture of me on my hands and knees crawling down the NJ pike with my Taylor on my back and Jacqui making sure I'm crawling on the left side of the road.

Well, oldude, it's like this. For a loooonnng time the Folklore Society of Greater Washington has been retreating to a park/camp for a long weekend of workshops and mini-concerts. We show up at the camp or park on Friday night for a pot luck and sing songs and play instruments. On Saturday and Sunday there are workshops all day, interspaced with mini concerts by invited guests. They take place in various locations, outside weather permitting. there's lunch and more music. Then dinner and a evening concert (sign up to play a song) Sunday is the same, and some folks leave Sunday and some on Monday morning.

Currently the Getaway is held at a camp in Maryland by a lovely bay with sailboats and pretty nice cabins with clean showers and it's very nice. It's a reunion and a festival and a retreat all rolled into one. No paid performers, but some are invited to come for free to be special guests. Over the years we've had some excellent performances and always folks who don't often play out get a chance to perform. The workshop ideas as you see come from all of us and represent our interest to a great extent.

It's worth the price of admission. Mostly people who come once come again.

I've been going since the 70's, though not consecutively like Bill Day. It's fun event and I look forward to it.
cheers
chance

oldude Chance omitted to mention there is NO "audience" as such, everyone seems to be a performer or certainly a participant, I dont think we have anything quite like it in the UK!! It is Habit forming however, and a wonderful expierience, BTW that "lovely bay with sailboats" Chance casually mentioned is Chesapeake bay!!!!

Lots of wonderful ideas about, olddude, but this one for years running never fails to reach fruition and become a reality to remember. So, save your pennies, take an extra mortgage on the farm if needs be, follow instructions and directions as posted and BE THERE! Lots of good music by friends and strangers and a chance to put faces on and shake hands with a lot of folks who exist only on the printed page to you, as yet.

Olddude, it is a weekend of participatory music, fellowship and pure magic. The FSGW folks have been doing this for many, many years. A number of them either post regularly on Mudcat or make good use of Mudcat and digitrad resources, and a number of years ago began inviting Mudcat participants to attend. Bless them, and I am forever grateful for this weekend that is the highlight of my year. It feeds the soul.

Come if you can!

from a past Getaway...

Sonnet 03/11/07                                  MLXV

To absent friends and lost loves let us drink,
Recalling smiles and times that all once shared.
On those no longer near let us now think,
To bring back reasons that for them we cared.
Some are not here, yet still remain, within
The songs and words they left behind. And some
Are in our souls, when hopes or dreams begin:
A part of what each of us have become.
To those apart let us now raise a glass
And take a moment to give thanks for all
That we from others have ourselves received.
The world's a school, and our lives just a class
In playing well with others. Can we call
It more? Are we by our egos deceived?

This reminds me... I'll be lookin' for band-mates for the Saturday night concert....

EJ is in allready on harmonica...

Last year I had Leadfingers but he ain't gonna be here this year...

I was kinda hopin' that KT would make it and we'd give it another try... Then again, if it didn't and I had to fire her again, that would break my poor ol' hillbilly heart... Sniff...

So ol' Bobert accepting applications now... No, no dancin' girls at the Saturday concert...

(Why not, Boberdz???)

Well, sheet fire... Why the heck not??? Okay, maybe a few hotties wouldn't hurt... Of course I'll have to do somethin' a little more dance-able then I did last year but, hey...

Okay, ladies... You know who you are and you know the what is expected... I bring the feathers...

B~

Well, thanks Amos....a real gentleman is always a good liar when chivalry calls for it.

And, well.... country blues....or a little Jazzy blues....or a little bluesy sounding Gospel.....

Now that I think about about my voice, your resonator guitar and Mississippi Stomp blues, and....the question of singing on pitch and in key, and....

Micca, I don't even want to know what scrolling your nurd is.

Alas, all you fine people, I have become accustomed to the steady paycheck and health insurance and I am also cursed with a sense of reponsibility. At that point in the fall, both parking lots at the park fill and cars are lined up down into the center of town and there are only four of us to handle things. I would be incredibly pissed off if someone skipped off to go have fun and left me with that, so I am not about to do the same to my co-workers. I don't suppose there are any plans in the future to have the Getaway occur at a later date?

Ah, Tami...we HAD the Getaway 'later' for a few years, and people froze. The traditional date for many years was Columbus day weekend, back when it was still a holiday, so some could have Monday off and not have to leave on Sunday afternoon.

The weather in early October gives us about a 79.421% chance of being able to sing & sit OUTSIDE. (Last year was wonderful!)

When it was in Nov., it conflicted with other events.....*sigh*...if we wait till it's convenient for everyone, we'd never have it.

We truly wish it were all easier.

More space would be great, whenever they finish the new dining hall.

I wonder if there is any hope that with a new dining hall will come a person who works therein who actually likes food? My only absolutely bonafide complaint about the place is the food, which is truly awful. At least as bad, and sometimes worse, than the lunch line in a public elementary school. It would be wondrous if they had someone supervising the kitchen who cared at all about food preparation. I ain't asking for gourmet meals, mind you. But it seems they go out of their way to do a poor job with what they have. I'd say, offer to pay more for better food, except that better food doesn't taste better if ill-prepared.

Oh well. I don't attend the Getaway for the food. I attend for the music and the company...both of which are always excellent.

Do I remember that there are some outdoor grills?

Post - Top - Forum Home - Printer Friendly - Translate
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming

*wry smile*...remember, the kitchen staff is 'largely' college students working part time, and they cater 'mostly' to 'youth groups', who no doubt think meatloaf is gourmet stuff.

We had the same problem many years ago at another camp that catered to Boy Scouts and such....but after a year of WORSE than this, they let US cook.... which was nice, but it required 2 hours a weekend kitchen duty.

I am lucky...I was raised in Kansas, where some of that stuff is haute cuisine.... I just eat it and shrug and go listen to the music. (at least Friday night can be tolerable)

(outdoor grills were at Ramblewood... and their 'grilling' was kinda mediocre)

Remember...some hated the food at Ramblewood, some loved it. Rick Fielding said it was great!

I'd sorta guess 'flat, close, and warm' trump 'food & cold weather & hills' for many of us as we age.

Hey, David (Ingerson), I'm glad you're getting to go this year. I wish I could -- it was a hoot last year! -- but RL seems likely to interfere.
Kind of a shame too, since Suzette missed most of the Getaway last year due to some really inconsiderate gall stone or the like, so I missed her and Chance (except for the song thing at their lovely home the night before the Getaway).   It'd also be great to see you again, dear Severn, and cheer you on in your recovery from that string of catastrophes.

There are so many very special people I met (or got together with again) at Getaway last year. I really hope to get to go back. If not this year, then next year for sure.

Anyone who wants to get a teensy glimpse of goings on at Getaway should check out the

My advice??? Don't eat it... We'll go on a hunger stricke for better food!!! That'll teach 'um not to mess with a bunch of aging folkies, allright...

The trick to the sleep is to stay up late, get up early, and just sleep twice as hard as usual in between.

Janie, you oughta know how to do it by now.
You stay up late, get up for breakfast, goback to bed till luch, no much happens from breakfast to lunch except a lot of burping. When you are up for luch you should be ready to go till way past you bedtime of 9:00. Watch & see how sister Dani does it she stays up till at least 11:00, she's a real party girl. Maybe you're just not eating enough

Or you do what I did - twice - which is to stay up till about 5A and sleep through breakfast, then get up at least in time for lunch and maybe even for a 10:30 workshop.   I hear lots of people complaining about the food, so I figure a little more sleep is worth more than breakfast anyway. (Just grab a couple nutrition bars and an apple or banana from the late night snack tray in the dining room and Voila! Breakfast in bed!)

Plan B is to follow the lead of Marion and a couple of the rest of us and take a snooze on one of the couches in the cabin while Mick or Amos sings you a sweet bluesy or folksy lullabye. Then when Barry Finn comes in, 'round 4 AM, he'll revive you with a rollicking chantey.
Works for me.

Hey, kids, I'm looking at flights, now.

If I play my cards right, I might even make it up Thur p.m.! Question is, where is BWI in relation to you? Should I rent a car from there, and thence to Getaway?

Or, are there enough people getting in to BWI Friday that I should time it that way and carpool?

KT comin' to the Getaway!?!?!?....

Geeze... I can just see it now... She gains yet another audition for the BobertsBlueBand and I gotta fire her yet again and spend another tortured guilt filled years...

Think I'll just stay home...

(But, Bobert... Aren't you KT's #1 Adorning Fan???)

Well, yeah, I am...

(Well, then you can't stay home...)

This is a set up...

Oh, to think I have another chance at the Bobert Blues band....If I start eating gravel now, perhaps I won't get fired this time!

The connection to the Metro at National is pretty good, KT (as long as you don't get in ridiculously late and miss the last train). It's a bit of a walk, but not bad if your luggage has wheels. The Metro will take you very close to the Folk Ghetto.
I'm looking forward to seeing you again.

Hey, KT,
To further whet your appetite for being 'rehired' for the Blues Band, just go to YouTube and do a search for "FSGW Getaway" and "Bobert's Blues Band."   You'll see a bit of what you missed last year.
(The pay wasn't much, but the music was hot!)

KT - Huzzah!

Here's a suggest - ask if anyone in the greater DC area could put you up for the night.

It seems there is no such thing as a reasonably priced hotel or motel these days, especially in metro areas, at least nothing that is both clean and safe, with no meth labs or drug deals going down three doors away.

A friendly reminder regarding the silent auction. While I don't know, I am hopeful there will be more space for it this year than in the two previous years at West River.

All items are welcomed and are a tax deductible donation (I think. Dean? Charlie?) Music. Books, Teapots, crafts, instruments, double boilers, Frederick's of Hollywood underwear (as long as the tags are still on;^).    Bring an item, and bring money or a checkbook to bid. The auction supports the Getaway scholarship fund, and makes it possible for people to attend that might not otherwise be able to.

Roger, I sure hope Marge is going to come this year. Aside from me dearly wanting to see her, her hovering around the table to pounce with a last minute bid to be sure she got the items she wanted was right good for "bidniz."

The donations are tax-deductible "to the extent allowed by law." That means the giver of the gift can declare a donation of the fair market value of the item, and the purchaser can claim a donation of whatever was paid in excess of the fair market value of the item. I I have a widget which in good faith I believe to be worth $20, I can claim a deduction of $20. If I bid $32 for it, and win the bid, I can claim $12 of donation, because it was only worth $20, and the rest was money given to a good cause.

There should be lots more room, by the way-- we're planning to move the auction into the old Dining Hall, along with the marketplace. (Bring your CDs, DVDs, and other products for sale.)

I'll plan to be there early, as usual, to help lug tables and anticipate traffic patterns. (It will be fine...we'll form a committee!

I have a rental on reserve but would just as soon not use it, if I can find another way to get to West River and back (my flight out from Dulles is on Monday at 5:30pm).

And if I am going to use a rental car, I'd love to help someone else get to the Getaway, with or without sharing the cost.

Gary,

Some of the worst of us would have to deposit enough money that we'd have to go broke and have to draw on the fund money just to be able to pay our way back in next year, so, in the end, they'd only still break even.....

But forewarned, may have to be fore-almed, if we're forced to offer admissions of gilt. Next thing you know, they'll be asking similar donations for such things as all mention of sailors named Jack, all unhappy endings of ballads or for all songs beginning with "As I Roved Out...".

I realize that people have tried finding ways for many years of making Folk Music pay, but.....

Let me preface this by saying I consider it a privilege to attend the Getaway, and am staggered by the value for the money....

However... the registration page says that 2 or more are cheaper with a membership. I'm assuming that if more than 2 are registering, one would purchase a family membership, in which case it would cost more, rather than less $$.

Last year, some attending friends who don't sing went off for the afternoon and ate some hard shell crabs. They had six left over and they brought them back to West River and gave them to me. There were more than I could eat when I brought them out after dinner, so I thought I'd share some of our World famed Maryland cuisine with some of my UK friends. One was game but inexperienced and struggled a bit, one declined politely, another shuddered in revulsion when I opened one up. I gave up on cultural exchange, called over some coastal-raised friends and we tore right into them.

So it's crabcakes, flounder styffed with crabmeat, Crab Norfolk or the like for those who don't like a mess or working a bit for your meal and and some newspapers to spread on the table, lots of napkins and a mallet or sharp knife at least for the hardcore hardshell crab lovers, but for goodness sakes, get some Maryland Seafood while you're in the area!

When in your part of the world, I usually go for the crabcakes, with a little hot sauce. Never actually cracked into a crab. Do you just eat the legs or is the torso where the good stuff is? (I can hear the Vegans gagging already).
Joe, I'd love to get some crab at that restaurant where you and I and Amos have eaten before, if we get to the camp early enough.

You open up the crab by pulling up on the "bib" underneath, take off the top shell half and turn it over to put waste matter in, scrape out the gills and mustardy-looking stuff inside and what's left is the good backfin meat (what you refer to as torso) encased in a shell you have to break open, and the legs and claws. You pull off the legs and claws and attack the good backfin meat first. A sharp knife, a wooden mallet or a metal nutcracker can be used as aids in breaking the shell and getting to the best meat. You then pick out the meat with your fingers and eat it as you go. Restaurants usually issue bibs for the crab eaters. A couple of strategically placed paper bags will hold all the shells that get thrown away.Newspapers will be spread across the top of the table. The legs and claws get cracked next and the meat (good, but in Blue Crabs, not as good as the body meat)gets picked from them. A dish of melted butter is usually set by to dip the crabmeat in. When the first one is thoroughly demolished and picked clean, you start on your next one. Beer is the traditional drink of choice with the hardshell crabs, and some beer, along with Old Bay Seasoning and whatever else, is part of what's added to the water in the big pot that they are boiled in.

It's a messy, but wonderful experience, and I'll serve as guide for any party that wants to go out and order some, as I'm not working at the moment and I'll actually get there at a decent daylight time well rested for once. The Maryland tradition is to get large amounts of people on a weekend and order crabs by the bushel and feast on large numbers of them.

....but crabcakes are perfectly wonderful, as well.

"When in your part of the world, I usually go for the crabcakes, with a little hot sauce. Never actually cracked into a crab. Do you just eat the legs or is the torso where the good stuff is? (I can hear the Vegans gagging already)."

EJ, you eat anything that's not hard! Hah,Hah

EJ, scholars differ about eating everything you find in the shell. A well cooked crab will yield some backfin lump when you pull the swimmer legs away, and oftem a bit with each leg. The legs themselve are not worth much unless its a VERY large crab.

Unlike Barry the mighty Finn, I don't eat the greenish 'mustard' or gray gills, inside the shell.

Severn has it right above, except I like to crack the shell or carapace in two halves to facilitate retrieving the white flesh of the crab. You should know the latin name for the Blue Crab is Callinectes Sapidus, Beautiful Swimmer.

It's not hard to learn the basics, but it takes a few trips to get fast and 'complete' at it. (The first time I tried it, I allowed as how crabs were a good diet food, as the calories expended were almost as much as those gained from the meal...not counting the beer, of course)

And what's Crab Norfolk?

Crab cakes are supposed to look like a baseball made of backfin. Not a brown, deep-fried, wafer of bread crumbs with crab juice sprayed on.

A chef will use a little egg batter to hold it together.

Wait, wait, this is a Getaway thread. yes, we will see some of you soon at the pregetaway singaround. We usually stop at the Royal Mile Pub for Lunch around 1:00 or so for lunch on Friday and then on to West River. I take the southern route, disliking Rt 50.

Well, first of all, yeah... I did my 20 years in Wes Ginny but...

...before that I lived in Virginny and Virginny is crab country... Okay, maybe not southwest Virginniy but everyone else is crab pickers... Now crab pickin' ain't all about crab... It's about the important stuff like socializin' and gettin' fallin' down drunk... Ya' see, there really ain't enough real food in crabs to absorb the alcohol so everyone goes to crab pickin's for one purpose, which I allready alluded to which is the drunk part...

Speakin' of gettin' drunk, Amos, howz about stoppin' in one of them baggie stores in California and pick me up a bag of good weed??? There ain't much good weed 'round these parts 'cause you Wes Coasters done got it all stashed fir yerselves... So, how about it, pal???

Right, Bobert. Tell him to hide it in his shoe. They'll never find it there. Right?

LEJ, approaching the end of the season, anyway, at least that far north on the Bay. And if they're around, don't need no crab pot. A chicken wing or thigh with a string tied around it and a net will suffice.

Annie took us to a large community clambake/crabfeast at Crisfield, MD, this summer. It is apparently a huge local event designed for all the local politicians to shake everyone's hand. Pay a single fee, and all the blue crabs, fried clams, fried fish fillets, corn-on-the-cob and sweet potato fries you can eat, as well as all the Michelob, Budweiser, and CocaCola products you can drink.

I opted for the crabs and bottled water. I got tired, physically, and also of the carnage, before I got full.

I guess I'll be glad to settle for the frozen flounder or ocean perch fillet that is bound to be an offering one night in the cafeteria.

Besides, you don't want them harps rusting when they fall out 'o yer pocket when you lean over to net a crab off the little dock.

No lie... I was over at my brother's beat up marina (boyz club) in Deale, Md. which is about 10 minutes from the Getaway and I was crabbin' from the dock and bent over to try to net up a crab and my cell phone fell outta my shirt pocket... Never did find it... Plus, I missed the crab...

That's just one of the reason why I play the blues...

Yo, Amos... Don't listen to Janie... Put the weed in yer geetar case... They run them thru the x-ray machine before stickin' 'um in the baggage compartment but that's about it... No body cavity stuff... No sniffy dogs... Just stick it in there and all will be fine... Girls???... Always trying to get ya' caught doin' dumb stuff??? Like what's that all about, anyway??? Severn gave me a crab after dinner at the last Getaway. It really was terrific. We get a lot of crab here in Northern California in the Spring, but not much the rest of the year - so Severn's crab was a real treat. I guess that was the first hardshell crab I've eaten on the East Coast, since I like the crabcakes so much and I get my share of hardshell crab here in California.
Crab tastes best when you catch it and cook it yourself, but I've done that only once.

On the advantage of being a ggiirrll.

Been crabbing with my sis a few times out on the Chesapeake Bay, with limited success catching crabs of legal size. However, I remember being out with her in a canoe, probably 20+ years ago. We were having some success with our chicken parts and strings, but doubtful we were going to haul in enough blue crabs to serve as a main course for 4. A motorized skiff approached us, handsome young man aboard. He pulled along side and handed over close to 1/2 bushel legal-sized crabs, smiled broadly, then powered away.

I hope to hear some "skipjack" songs this weekend. While there are plenty of well-known sea chanties, I'll be curious to learn of any songs regarding "Watermen," i.e. any tradition of song among commercial fishermen (aside from whalers) among the bays and coastal waters of the mid-Atlantic coastal region.

Janie, try the Manhaden shanties & songs of the Georgia Sea Islands, loaded with songs of the inshore fisheries

Did loads of crabbing as a kid on Cape Cod, we get blue crabs there too. I also got some crab at last yrs getaway, it's well worth the work, lot like working on a lobster but you unNew Englanders wouldn't know much bout lobsters if you were bit by one.

For crabbing we used to use dead dogs as bait until we ran out of dead dogs. We'd run down the dogs with a string cans tied together & corral them & then let the bugs at them. Where'd we get the bugs you might ask? We'd go bug hunting in the tenement alleys, we'd use rotten potatoes to lure them out of hiding then use the same tin cans we used to catch the dogs, on the bugs. They were huge bugs but the cans were those gallon size cans, the industrial type cans. We used to get the cans from the old brewery. You may not believe but in the area of Boston where I grew up, right down the street from my grandfather's house there were at least 5 of 6 breweries, in time most where all burnt down , I think 1 or 2 are still standing, empty of course. Back to the cans. When they were mixing the hops & yeast & the other stuff they'd have these huge 1 gallons cans, tons of them & I never knew what was in them cause the labels were always charred off them but they had them & when they were finished with them they stocked them out by the loading docks & waited till Friday for the collection guy to come around with his horse & buggy & collect them them. We never stole the cans, we bargined with the buggie guy for them. We'd trade him horse food for the cans. Yup, really, these horses were big & needed all kinds of food & we had a good in with the crabbers who'd give us crabs if we left them alone & didn't bother them for protection money. We never was gonna hurt them, them bei8ng pretty mean themselves & they never really needed protection either but that's what made our world back then run. Speaking of running anyone ever run down a dead dog?

Barry

Unfortunately, I am not going to make it. This breaks my heart, but the work on the CD here in Toronto is going to take a day longer than I anticipated, and that would put me at Getaway after midnight on Saturday. I feel very badly, and I apologize sincerely to the organizers and volunteers for the finest folk organization anywhere. These folks work very hard, are devoted to the music, and are my friends. I do not like this as I feel strongly about keeping committments, and feel great loyalty and devotion to the FSGW folk community. I hope they will forgive me.

And just as bad is that I won't be able to spend time with all of you. I truly look forward to this gathering, and seeing you all. I hope it is understood that I am hard at work on making this music and getting back in the musical saddle.

Enjoy the Getaway, folks and know that I wish I were there with you.

Tinker & I will be showing up at the Getaway Sunday morning for breakfast & I can bring the CD's if they belong to them

Hmmmm.... Ya know somehow that potato got left in my car a couple years back. I found it in a pretty gift bag.... Perhaps it would appreciate a make over in total flooze .... the thong was not in the bag.... Now if it could just be combined with the right piece of hideobelia...hmmmmm...

Bill, I did plan ahead, but my cars decided to require repairs at the same time our income got tied up in the wonders of government contract payment delays....

- sorry that hugs were missed (they were missed!) but squeezing in o.n.e. last workshop made us have to literally run out the door.

- only one regret..... how could I have screwed up the schedule and missed the blues jam?!?! sincere, humble, sad regret. My only excuse is that the Sandy Paton memorial was not something you could do 'part' of, and I misread the blocks after that. I trust it was just as good with one fewer floozie?

Just got back and on line at Fortunatos after a WONDERFUL weekend, I thought for the last coupla years I was becoming sensible and getting to bed early-ish (possibly due to the World shortage of Midnight Oil)but this year its been 2.30 am, 3.40am and some indeterminate time close to 4 am (the vagueness about the time is due to Port, Champagne and other celebratory drinking)and I am Knackered. I have had a wonderful Getaway with Hugs and Friends and INCREDIBLE singing and just floating in a sea ofconnected Friendship that transcends National and World boundaries. So many moments to recall and remember!! one of the best (to whet the appetite of those who werent there) at about 1.30 this morning Elizabeth LaPrelle singing the Parting Glass in the most electrifying way to a small privelaged group in the Retreat centre,
On a different plane Singing, with John roberts and an assortment of others "What a Mouth what a mouth, what a Norf and sarf",
performing in the Mummers play with "this years cast" that included Hnnah (the Turkish Knight) being revived by the hip flask of the Doctor(John Roberts)
the kibitsing from the "audience" especially during Charlies announcements , in the concert.
Bob and the others in Songwriters showcase and the revelations of the very different ways that we all wrote songs,
all this and so much more.
My Personal Thanks again to the FSGW for hosting and making me welcome at this event and the Friends (whether Mudcat or not) that make it feel like coming Home.
Thank you
Micca

This morning I asked -- how come every year the Getaway is Perfect, and yet the next year it's even better? Janie said she guessed maybe we're all getting perfecter? Bruce added, "It's like a pearl. Every year another layer is added." That's right.

People who couldn't get there are always there in people's memories and we reminisce about them (I almost said we gossip about them but of course no one would do that...). Those memories and reminiscences and hopes to see them another year are all part of the Getaway experience.

Talk about seeing people another year -- some old friends were back this year. Pete the Spy hadn't been to a Getaway in -- what? -- 18 years? -- and Al Kehs had been away almost as long I think. Sure seemed natural to have them back.

This year there was a pair swans on the river. Postcard stuff.

Micca I agree, Elizabeth singing The Parting Glass while John R accompanied her is a very special memory.

More later....

There were too many good times to pick out particular hghlights, but I am very grateful for the chance to lead a workshop wih Nancy King and learn one of the most gruesome verses of Frankie and Johnnie I have ever heard (composed by Nancy and her colllege room mate).

Just got in a little while ago. Got detoured by an Irish session at 9:00 in Boston, had to stop for the rest.

Mick you must be getting old buddy, got to the Getaway just before 6 in the morning on Sunday, you could've beat me there for once. Lisa was on her way to bed & Keith, Martha & John were still singing, raising the dawn. I don't want to rub it in but your are a few days older than me so I'll forgive you (you have the address to send a CD too, right).
Tinker & I did agree that it was well worth the ride even for the short time we had there, it was just wonder-full.

Got in at at 2 am (East coast time) and was in bed by three - hey that's earlier than any night at the Getaway!

SO many wonderful memories, new tunes floating in my head and many more to learn, reunions with dear friends, LOADS of laughs and many wonderful new friends. Fabulous workshops, and many impromptu sessions along the way.

Too many good memories and way too much fun for some one my age to be having! A few highlights from among many - Meeting Hilary (MGAS) and Richard, with souls just as beautiful as their voices. Getting to visit a bit with Rita and Bill. Listening to Claire and Hilary sing a late night duet. Making the cut into Bobert's blues band as the tamborine shaker:>) Listening to a whole slew of Jims, all of whom are gems. The Maudlin Brothers. Charlie Baum's ever beatific demeanor. Hanging out with my best Buds, Amos, LEJ, and Bobert, and my darlin' sister, Annie. And more wonderful songs and voices from every quarter than you can even imagine if you have not been to a Getaway. Regrets at not getting a chance to visit or sing with a bunch of folks. And missing too many cherished friends who could not make it this year....it was tough, making enough noise for all of you - but I managed;^)

Too many favorite things to mention....I understand Claire and I treated Tinker to a truly remarkable zzzzzz duet. If Sins (who does not snore) had been there, we could have been quite a trio. Now I know why Annie slept in the back of her SUV!

So that's just a few items from another weekend of magic and musical fellowship. I am so very, very grateful to the FSGW members who put in sooo much volunteer time to make this magic happen and thankful for your kindness is inviting us to share in the result.

Janie

Some terrific moments this year...

Dave from Oregon in his performance of an Irish song at the Saturday Night Concert. If he was nervous in front of a group of strangers, it didn't show. Nailed the song, and I saw Dave Diamond and John nod at each other in recognition of it.

Who in hell are the Maudlin Brothers!? Those two guys can sing! And yodel! They added an element of fun and professionalism to the jam in the Peace Shack on Friday that was amazing. One of them accompanied me on Hickory Wind with a high harmony so tight it brought tears to my eyes.

They didn't stay long on Saturday, but the two Jims from the Harley String Band did, and laid their magic on us, and it turned into another monumental jam.

I wish I could remember the name of the song I sang with Harley Jim Johnson and Ron Davis on Sunday night. It was probably the most amazing three part harmony I have ever done, with Jim on melody, Ron on middle, and me on high harmony. The chords were ringing like midnight bells, or so I would say if I had a poetic bent.

And David gave the term "blues harp" an entire new meaning.

Bill D in his psychedelic coveralls. Enough said.

Bill's better half playing zither and sing Santa Lucia.

Discussing character motivations in Matty Groves with the Laprelle's. I can't imagine having that conversation anywhere else.

Hils singing the chilling song about the Water Spirit late Friday.

A formation of geese flying toward a full moon shining above a gazebo where harp notes and voices mingled.

By the time I arrived at the Getaway I had told myself that this could be the last one. Travel takes so much out of me that most trips are just not worth the pain. However, before the thing was over I realized that I couldn't just quit. The trip back home was one I dreaded and I almost decided to fly and let Jacqui and Carol do the road trip, but Tinker of the magic hands gave me a massage that set me up for the trip. Tinker, I never would have made it without that massage.

There were too many high spots to list but I have to say that seeing Dani and her lovely daughters was certainly one of them.
Then there was KT all the way from Alaska. What a delightful lady she is!

Amos, Dan and KT, thanks you all so much for your dedication of your songs to me. What have I done to warrant such attention?

Well, Capt'n, you'd better stick around for awhile 'cause my buddy Amos has his eye on yer *job* of being the Getaway ladies man... Yup, I caught him several times tryin' a few of yer tricks on the womenz an' them tricks seemed to be workin'... Now, between you and me, I likes Amos like a brother but he ain't ready for the job... Maybe 'bout 5 more years under yer toolage (bad word, Boberdz...) but not right now... But ya' gotta give him credit fir thinkin' that he's, ahhhhhhh, up to the task... Sho nuff do... So eats yer veggies an' take yer pills an' all that... Okay??? Amos is a young man... He'll have plenty of good or fair years of harrumzimmerin' when you hang up yer harpoon...

Just MO, of course...

As fir Saturday night's jam in Peace Cabin, it was for me like being put into a time machine and taken back to me livin' in Richmond, Va. where there ain't no other music than bluegrass, country and old timey music... Fun, but hurt my bluesman head a little... But some fineass pickin' in there... Heck, when you look down to see what time it is thinkin' that it was like 11:00 and it's 2 in the mornin' that means that you been havin' some fun... Thanks EJ fir the great harp playin'... Thanks Amos fir yer great geetra pickin' and that great song to the Capt'n... Thanks KT fir, ahhhhh, what??? Not even lettin' me audition fir yer band??? Sheese... Thanks to the folks who came to the blues jam... We'll do better next year with schedulin' unless, ahhhhh, Bob Dylan or God dies this year...lol...

Nice meetin' the folks from aldelpi records and I'll be in touch...

And, boy, wasn't the food just great this year, or what???

Ah, Bobert, I yam thinking you need to stick to your slide, man, 'cuz your perspicacity in other areas of life is a good deal flawed, man. Just telling you as it is, ya know? ANd I am sorry about the time-dilation thing; guess I shoulda warned you. It's part of the Getaway turf, and sometimes it doesn't settle out for a week. I was trying to talk design review with someone in the office today, and was suddenly transported to listening to Hils doing "Lonely PLaces" and had to wait until she finished the sweet, piercing chorus until I could recollect my thoughts and return to business. Sheeshe!

I guess it kind of shows where one would druther be. To be there listening to KT, or Hils, or Elizabeth, or Jim-Squared's bluegrass, would be a much preferable career if only I could negotiate the pay a little better...

That's what I'm saying. And what's more, neither did I. And apparently the same instruction holds true for women. This is according to Kendall, of course. I haven't had access to a chicken yet in order to test the theory.

The Getaway just seems to get better with each passing year.

So many great moments, it's difficult to recall them all right now.

Dan Schatz doing an amazing version of Rolling Home at the Saturday night concert, with a dedication to Kendall. Amos and KT both singing their own songs dedicated to the Cap'n.

I was absolutely flabbergasted that John Roberts had learned and sang Carrying Nelson Home for me at the Saturday night concert. That was such a treat.

Hilary and Richard were just stupendous and I finally got to hear Richard sing Lady of Autumn, late on Sunday night. If that lad doesn't use that voice more often I'll be finding some sort of torture for him - that is too good a sound to waste!

Hilary and Claire doing a harmony on Where Ravens Feed late Sunday night was just superb - such beautiful voices and they blended so well. The LaPrelles dueting on what sounded like an Elizabethan piece that same night was something I'm glad I didn't miss.

Richard and Dave Diamond's parodies were absolutely spot on at the Parody workshop. Gordon Bok and Steve Cormier both gave wonderful mini concerts.

Rita Ferrara''s Santa Lucia on Sunday night, with Zither accompaniment was so beautiful - Kendall enjoyed that so much.

We had a twelve hour journey home, but the time seemed to go quickly with Carol for company. We completed the last leg of the journey with an almost full moon rising to accompany us home. When it first came up it was deep orange on the horizon, changing to silver as it climbed into the sky.

Carol and I spent the day trawling a local thrift shop and then at the beach with Seamus, who I have now sprung from Auntie Mary. I think tomorrow may just be a relaxing day. Maybe I'll recall more of the highlights then.

Just arrived home and washed the road dust off my feet. It will be some time before I make up the deprival of sleep. But the fullness of the music I hold in my heart may carry me through until the next Getaway comes round.

Too many high points to list them all, but singing with Hils and sharing a song with Anglo were two of them. Meeting -- and singing with -- KT. Waking up to Tinker on Sunday morning. Rooming with the lovely and talented Janie. Hearing LEJ's virtuoso blues harp. Getting to know Bruce and Amos better. Hanging with Micca (which was great, even with Mary MIA). Watching Barry sing (hearing too, but with Barry it's a visual thing, too). Visiting with Jacqui and Kendall. And that late night singing session on Sunday, which was the stuff of memory and dream.

Indeed, Amos...and many, many thanks to those who did barely noticed tasks like bring the late night snacks, cleaning up after the late night snacks, moving chairs, etc...and to those NON_locals who did much of the silent auction set-up and organizing. Janie and Jacqui and even Tinker, when she managed to arrive.(did I miss anyone?)
It has become a community...it's just a shorter drive for some of us.

Whether in regard to music, to friendships, or to any other aspects (even the food wasn't intolerable), I am most grateful for the invitation, the hospitality, the chance to inflict my voice upon you, and elsewhat. Hilary was also a big help with the auction.

Tinker, I apologize, because I think it was me who doused your jacket when I doused myself for the second time in 20 minutes with "grape juice" after not putting the lid on the travel cup correctly. Sorry. (I think I had to change clothes three times Sunday night - you can dress me up, but you can't take me out!)

Every year I look forward to hearing Lucy sing with David on harp and Ron on viola. I wish you all would put out a CD.

Awoke late Sunday morning to the sound of Gordon Bok and his wife playing harp and concertina (I think - I didn't see) - just the two of them in the quiet living area of the lodge. Actually, it worried me at first. I thought maybe I had died during the night and gone to heaven until I opened my eyes to see the bunk overhead.

I have just uploaded all my video clips to a DVD as the first step to putting them on-line for all to enjoy. I warn you ahead of time my hand is sometimes shaky, and I did NOT realize that when I hum along the sound really carries and seems disproportionate in the videos. But they will certainly communicate the flavor and I will do better next year. This was my first time out of the box with the Flip recorder, which I treasure and recommend.

There are some great moments among them -- Gordon doing an instrumental piece, Hils doing "Where Ravens ".

One of the great treats this year was the authentic Western voice of Steve Cormier, who joined us for the first time, a real-world wrangler and bareback rider who knows the ropes of good and authentic Western US songs better than anyone I've heard.

Thanks for making the scene, Steve!!

Still trying to recover over here in Rockville. Not helped by the fact last night was practice for the Renaissance dance group I play for--and I didn't want to skip a third consecutive session--plus one of our furballs was meowing and scratching at the bedroom door several times during the night. If she wasn't so cute, she'd be mittens and guitar strings...

Had a blast this weekend! Still can't quite wrap my head around the concept of a WARM Getaway. Kept wanting to let my inner Hemingway Cat out and just curl up on the grass and bask.

Pretty much agree with everything everyone else has said. Hope someone got a recording of Steve Cormier's Aberdeen song from the "States and Cities" workshop. Hee!

Lots of nice chats with the Goddards, Micca & Tinker, Pete & Carly & Dean, Rita, and many others. Had fun co-hosting workshops with Severn and Amos. Enjoyed meeting Hilary & Richard and seeing KT again.

More commentary can be found here on my LiveJournal.

And last, but certainly not least, the link to what I perpetrated on Saturday. 'Cuz I know y'all want it... 8-)

Shit! It just makes my ass ache to think I missed what appears to have been a stellar weekend. This damned CD better (and will) be worth the sacrifice. I was still holding out hope I could get done ande get there at a decent hour, but it just wasn't to be. I was so looking forward to seeing friends, hugging my KT, and meeting and giving a hug to Hils so she could see that Col (God be good to him) wasn't the only big man capable of great hugs.....**chuckle**. And Dani (be still my fluttering heart) and the girls, Jacqui and the wrinkled arse old fella, Kiran and his folks, Amos and LEJ (at least I didn't have to wear a funny hat and spring for Makers Mark).....and on and on.

Next year, I promise.. besides, ..... Vikings will be in town.

Mick, we missed you. And I had a very important hug to deliver from the western office of Lane, Fielding, Patterson & Swan, which will now have to wait a year. Do come!

Mmario, any future relatives who get born, married, baptized or what-have-you that weekend next year will simply have to do it in West River, Maryland. Please explain this to them early and clearly and make absolutely sure they have grasped the concept.

And Mary, don't make me come up there... (Well, actually, DO make me come up there, but just to visit; don't make me come up there to drag you down to the Getaway.)

Bobert, I forgot to mention you in the list of people it's a pleasure to know better -- and to hear better! That's some damn fine blues you be pickin'. And thanks for the conversation.

I have neglected to adequately thank all the Getaway organizers. I've thanked in person those I know about and could find at the end of the weekend, but I know there are many of you I haven't met or whose roles I don't suspect. So thank you one and all for working so hard to put on this wonderful, unique event that is the highlight of my year.

Cheers,
Claire

I was able to drag Marge back to a Getaway this year and she rues the fact that she missed the last two. The weather was fabulous! The new dining hall was quite impressive and comfortable to be in. It has terrible acoustics turning background conversation into a "dull roar". I don't know if it was just me, but I kept thinking I heard people singing in the hall during meal time.

I played "Breakfast Blues" at the Saturday night concert. I asked LEJ to join. We did not do anything like practice. We did check that we were going to kick it off in the same key. LEJ plays a fine sounding harp, but to put the icing on the cake, he listens to what is happening in the song and follows along. Marge said it was the best version of "BB" she's heard (and she hates the song).

I am always amazed at the new people who show up. Richard sang wonderfully the multiple times I heard them. Steve Cormier discussed the evolution of "Home on the Range" and "Yellow Rose of Texas". I knew some of the story, but he added more history to both. The folk process does not always result in positive changes.

There were too many workshops to attend (I even missed the Parody Workshop for the first time ever).

And there were so many old friends. It is amazing how you step into a special place where you have not been for a year and feel somehow like you never left it.

My thanks to all of the FSGW for their Getaway creation.

It is amazing how you step into a special place where you have not been for a year and feel somehow like you never left it.

This is a really unusual phenomenon; for the last two years, LEJ and I have driven down from BWI, and we have both remarked that when you turn off Chalk Point Road onto the Getaway driveway, it is exactly like going back through the Looking Glass, or down the rabbit hole, or some such, into a continuum that is unmarred for the passing of a year, and things start up as though there had been no interruption; the passing year is something that happened in dream-time, and this is being back in the Real World. I know some folks would say it is the other way around, but that's my version and I'm sticking to it!! :D

To make up for not having the memory card for my camera last year, I have between 125-150 pics to share this year (depending on almost dupes, blurs and 'things too fierce to mention')
I will 'try' to get a few up tomorrow, but final sorting & labeling may take into next week.
(I often take wide shots of the scene, instead of the fantastic close-ups that others do...just to show what the ambiance was like.)

In fact, there are some songs performed at the nightly concerts which have so many verses that I am pretty sure the singers never really end them, but are just catching their breath between Getaways.
Could a forty verse limit be declared? Is that heretical? I know its Folk Music, but some of these ditties make The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald seem like an exercise in brevity. They would make Homer excuse himself for a bathroom break. Even Milton would need three or four cups of coffee to keep from doing a face plant into his zither. Thank God we all get to sing along on the choruses, because that we way we can tell if the person in the seat next to us has expired or not.
Not to mention any names of the guilty.
Micca.

Leej...I do agree. I think a 'basic' time limit would be the way to go. We have coped with this for all of the 30 years I have been going...(we used to allow TWO songs...this was changed to one a number of years ago to allow more spots/groups/persons)

Not every number fits neatly, and people DO like to have something special for this once-a-year shindig, but we really need to control the overall length.

I will do some gentle lobbying as next year approaches... (oh...gee, looks like I already started...*grin*)

Well my own feeling about a time limit is that I'm agin it. Maybe that's because one of the very longest songs was about a situation that Bill and I witnessed as it was happening.... Besides, all we're going to do after the concert is sing some more, right?

Well I'm still feeling the afterglow of the Getaway, and looking forward to the next one, especially since my favorite Viking has promised to be there! The weather couldn't have been more perfect, and the evenings were lovely with the full moon shining on the tranquil water. The new dining hall made mealtimes much better, and I do believe the food has improved each year we've been there. It still reminds me of the food at my elementary school cafeteria, but it's quite palatable and there's plenty of it, plus assorted sides and salads and 24/7 snacks provided by FSGW. As always there were too many workshops to choose from and I was distressed that I couldn't be everywhere at once. I was glad there were two ballad workshops. (I went to both, of course!). The "Songs not in English" was fun too - where Rita did Santa Lucia with her zither, and Charmion treated us to "Un Canadien Errant" and told us the history behind the song. Highlights - well there were so many. Amiel Schotz had everybody in stitches with his comedy scetch about an unfortunate Scottish gnome named Poppity. Dan Schatz sang a beautiful version of Rolling Home (to old New England - for Kendall) and Amos's self penned song about romance in the latter part of life (dedicated to Kendall and Jaqui) was one of the most beautiful I've heard in a long time. Everything John Roberts sang was wonderful. And let's not forget Charmion and Edmund who always come up with interesting songs and do them beautifully every time. MGAS (Hils) was
