Subject: RE: Saddleworth Rushcart 22nd/23rd August From: GUEST,Neovo Date: 18 Aug 09 - 04:42 AM Well I'm pleased to say at the moment the weather forecast seems to be improving. Not bothered about your elderly automobile JP2 as it would appear you have an alternative but I'm not too keen on getting my melodeon rained on. I'm confident that won't be a problem! |

Subject: RE: Saddleworth Rushcart 22nd/23rd August From: Tug the Cox Date: 18 Aug 09 - 06:54 AM No John, never been to Saddleworth ( yet) as it coincides with our annual family camp holiday. This will be the last year, though, as all kids are now officially adult. |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Rushcart 22nd/23rd August From: JP2 Date: 18 Aug 09 - 07:44 AM The forecast I've just looked at says a 60% chance of rain on Saturday and Sunday. So I'm going to keep looking 'til I find a better on! I'd better dig the "Rain Box",a.k.a. the Hohner Pokerwork out 'cos I'm not getting the others wet. Who's the Jockey this year Ed? JP2 |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Rushcart 22nd/23rd August From: GUEST,Ed Worrall Date: 18 Aug 09 - 08:33 AM Hi Les, no relation as far as I know, unless you have family in Ashton-Under-Lyne?! This year's Jockey is John Brooks, rabid Man U supporter which may give some clues to this year's banner...you'll have to be there on Saturday to find out! My Hohner Pokerwork is due for an outing this year I reckon, it's a long walk from Delph when it's raining... Ed |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Rushcart 22nd/23rd August From: GUEST,Neovo Date: 18 Aug 09 - 09:36 AM It's not going to rain - trust me! |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Rushcart 22nd/23rd August From: GUEST,Black Belt Caterpillar Wrestler Date: 18 Aug 09 - 09:45 AM It could be "boil in the bag Morris" for us Wrigley Head musicians using transparent capes then! |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Rushcart 22nd/23rd August From: JP2 Date: 18 Aug 09 - 09:48 AM Transparent capes??????? Failsworth Wimps!!!!! JP2 |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Rushcart 22nd/23rd August From: Rasener Date: 18 Aug 09 - 10:24 AM No not related Ed, but it is wierd. The cricket test match is on, so good chance of rain. |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Rushcart 22nd/23rd August From: GUEST,Ed Worrall Date: 18 Aug 09 - 10:40 AM Talking of musicians, I'm pleased to announce Saddleworth will have a 3 piece Brass section this year. Also Bacup are bringing Stacksteads Brass Band with them on the Sunday. So, Wrigley Head's wall of sound will be pale by comparison.... Ed |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Rushcart 22nd/23rd August From: JP2 Date: 18 Aug 09 - 11:19 AM The Wrigley Head Wall of Sound eh? It should probably truthfully be called the Earsldon,Silurian,Pomfret and fellow travellers Wall of Sound, although Wrigley Head did dance??? at the inauguration. In 1984 or 1985 a very disconsolate group of about four WHMM dancers sat in the Church Hotel looking, well, disconsolate. Upon enquiring as to the cause of their chagrin I was informed that "XXXXX had XXXXXed off home and so they had no musician to enable them to tread the light fantastic and would I excercise my small talents to assist them. Of course being of a kind and generous nature I concurred and was told the dance would the XXXXXing Oldham and the tune would British XXXXing Grenadiers. As I have never enjoyed playing by myself, despite rumours to the contrary,I proceeded to gather some chums around me to help out including John Williams and Colin "Berko" Robinson of Silurian MM, Ron Rocket of Pomfret MM and various others about 12 in all. When the time came for WHMM to dance the Oldham they were outnumbered by the band by 3 to 1 and most us thought it was a hoot. The next year we thought we could improve on the twelve so there was a bit more recruiting leading up to the Sunday. I think the largest authenticated number taking part was about 1989 or 1990 with 59 participants including two vicars playing tamboutines. Happy Days! |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Rushcart 22nd/23rd August From: GUEST,Ed Worrall Date: 20 Aug 09 - 04:33 AM Indeed John! We'll see what we can do this year... Just had confirmation that Gorton Morris Men will be sending 4 reps over to the Saddleworth Rushcart this year. Gorton MM have reformed and are staging their own Rushcart this year after a few years gap. Gorton were one of the teams at our first Rushcart in 1975 (the other being Adlington MM) and it's great to see them back. We're also looking forward to their 'Cart on 12th Sept, not to be missed! Ed |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Rushcart 22nd/23rd August From: GUEST,alanww Date: 20 Aug 09 - 06:18 AM I'm sorry, Eddie, but I can't be with you this year, as I'm booked to sing at Moira Furnace Folk Festival in Derbyshire; then I'll be driving up to Whitby for the rest of the Folk Week. But I bet you'll have a great weekend and won't even miss me! Say hello to Richard & Big John for me. Enjoy the liquid sunshine! "Don't mind the rain ...!" Alan Whitbread Shakespeare Morris Men |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Rushcart 22nd/23rd August From: GUEST,Ed Worrall Date: 20 Aug 09 - 06:57 AM No worries Alan, hope the Fest goes well. Having seen the forecast, there could be a bit of liquid sunshine around this year! See you at the Shakespeare MM do in Sept. Cheers Ed |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Rushcart 22nd/23rd August From: GUEST,Black Belt Caterpillar Wrestler Date: 20 Aug 09 - 07:13 AM It's not me that minds the rain, not after buying a house 1100 feet up in the Pennines! It's the concertina I'm trying to protect! |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Rushcart 22nd/23rd August From: JP2 Date: 20 Aug 09 - 01:48 PM Are Gorton bringing their 'orse? So that's why you're not coming to BFF '09,I wondered what siren voices were luring you away!! I just seen the 5 day forecast for Uppermill and have decided to leave the leaky '55 Sunbeam-Talbot at home and come up in something a bit more modern where you don't need to wear wellies! |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Rushcart 22nd/23rd August From: doncatterall Date: 27 Aug 09 - 08:13 AM apologies for being a pedant Ed but you still can't spell WADARD - great Rushcart this year - celebrated my 60th on the Saturday and both the wife and I entered the gurning! |
