Hi all,

This coming weekend 22nd/23rd August is the 35th Saddleworth Rushcart. If you are in the area (or want to make a special trip!) we look forward to seeing you there.

The 'Cart sets off approx 10.00 am on Sat 22 from Uppermill square to process around the villages of Saddleworth. On Sunday we set off at the same time up to St.Chads Church Uppmerill for the Rushcart Church service, followed by dancing, gurning, worst singer and wrestling competitions. 20+ Morris teams will be with us this year!

What's the weather forecast like,'cos if it looks damp we won't be coming in our elderly automobile as the windscreen leaks.

Well I'm pleased to say at the moment the weather forecast seems to be improving. Not bothered about your elderly automobile JP2 as it would appear you have an alternative but I'm not too keen on getting my melodeon rained on. I'm confident that won't be a problem!

No John, never been to Saddleworth ( yet) as it coincides with our annual family camp holiday. This will be the last year, though, as all kids are now officially adult.

The forecast I've just looked at says a 60% chance of rain on Saturday and Sunday.
So I'm going to keep looking 'til I find a better on!
I'd better dig the "Rain Box",a.k.a. the Hohner Pokerwork out 'cos I'm not getting the others wet.

Hi Les, no relation as far as I know, unless you have family in Ashton-Under-Lyne?!

This year's Jockey is John Brooks, rabid Man U supporter which may give some clues to this year's banner...you'll have to be there on Saturday to find out!

My Hohner Pokerwork is due for an outing this year I reckon, it's a long walk from Delph when it's raining...

Talking of musicians, I'm pleased to announce Saddleworth will have a 3 piece Brass section this year. Also Bacup are bringing Stacksteads Brass Band with them on the Sunday.

So, Wrigley Head's wall of sound will be pale by comparison....

It should probably truthfully be called the Earsldon,Silurian,Pomfret and fellow travellers Wall of Sound,although Wrigley Head did dance???
at the inauguration.
In 1984 or 1985 a very disconsolate group of about four WHMM dancers sat in the Church Hotel looking,well,disconsolate.
Upon enquiring as to the cause of their chagrin I was informed that "XXXXX had XXXXXed off home and so they had no musician to enable them to tread the light fantastic and would I excercise my small talents to assist them.
Of course being of a kind and generous nature I concurred and was told the dance would the XXXXXing Oldham and the tune would British XXXXing Grenadiers.
As I have never enjoyed playing by myself,despite rumours to the contrary,I proceeded to gather some chums around me to help out including John Williams and Colin "Berko" Robinson of Silurian MM,
Ron Rocket of Pomfret MM and various others about 12 in all.
When the time came for WHMM to dance the Oldham they were outnumbered by the band by 3 to 1 and most us thought it was a hoot.
The next year we thought we could improve on the twelve so there was a bit more recruiting leading up to the Sunday.
I think the largest authenticated number taking part was about 1989 or 1990 with 59 participants including two vicars playing tamboutines.

Indeed John! We'll see what we can do this year...

Just had confirmation that Gorton Morris Men will be sending 4 reps over to the Saddleworth Rushcart this year. Gorton MM have reformed and are staging their own Rushcart this year after a few years gap.

Gorton were one of the teams at our first Rushcart in 1975 (the other being Adlington MM) and it's great to see them back. We're also looking forward to their 'Cart on 12th Sept, not to be missed!

I'm sorry, Eddie, but I can't be with you this year, as I'm booked to sing at Moira Furnace Folk Festival in Derbyshire; then I'll be driving up to Whitby for the rest of the Folk Week.
But I bet you'll have a great weekend and won't even miss me! Say hello to Richard & Big John for me.

I just seen the 5 day forecast for Uppermill and have decided to leave the leaky '55 Sunbeam-Talbot at home and come up in something a bit more modern where you don't need to wear wellies!
