Subject: Is it just me or the prison song 'Rosie' From: TinDor Date: 27 Aug 09 - 03:04 AM sound somewhat similar to the Beatles "Come Together"? It's the part when Lennon starts his lyrics/verse Beatles "Come Together" Beatles "Negro Prison Songs / "Rosie"1947 [RARE]" |
Subject: RE: Is it just me or the prison song 'Rosie' From: greg stephens Date: 27 Aug 09 - 06:01 AM Vaguely similar I suppose. Defintely from the same musical background...worksongs in general. The Beatles were well brought up lads, in skiffle groups. Everybody was listening to records like Murderers' Home then, or if not that than Lonnie Donegan's version of the songs. Thanks for posting Rosie. Reminds me just how powerful that stuff was when I first heard it as a kid. That's why I love folk music. They don't they teach the students to sing like that at the Department of Folkology, more's the pity. |

Subject: RE: Is it just me or the prison song 'Rosie' From: dick greenhaus Date: 28 Aug 09 - 02:06 PM Jim- I looked it up, and thanx. For anyone who hasn't looked it up, it means (literally) "Long may your chimney smoke with other people's coal". I'm happily burning Dr. Bronson's coal, among that of others. |
Subject: RE: Is it just me or the prison song 'Rosie' From: alanabit Date: 28 Aug 09 - 02:35 PM I reckon that the next time somebody tells me that some prissy pop record has "got soul", I shall refer them to this recording. Thanks for posting TinDor. |

Subject: RE: Is it just me or the prison song 'Rosie' From: Barry Finn Date: 29 Aug 09 - 12:21 AM I agree but I don't hear "Come Together" at all. Barry |
Subject: RE: Is it just me or the prison song 'Rosie' From: TinDor Date: 29 Aug 09 - 04:42 AM BarryFinn, Im only refering to the way Lennon sings/phrases the song/lyics when he first comes in. |
Subject: RE: Is it just me or the prison song 'Rosie' From: GUEST,Barry on wife computer at work Date: 29 Aug 09 - 05:49 PM And I was picturing Lennon with an axe swinging it sideways into the drum kit, repeatedly & calling the lead with the rest of the boys answering "come together" as the axe made it's mark, kind of sexy. Subject: RE: Is it just me or the prison song 'Rosie' From: GUEST Date: 21 Oct 10 - 07:59 AM Try listening to Jeff Buckleys version of 'Be your husband' on the 'Live at Sine' album. Its almost an exact cover... |
Subject: RE: Is it just me or the prison song 'Rosie' From: GUEST,Guest Date: 29 Jan 11 - 02:59 PM Does anyone know where I could find the lyrics for 'Rosie'? Or a good website for folksong lyrics in general. In my class right now we have to write comparisons but sometimes it is quite difficult when don't have the full lyrics for slave songs, work songs, prison songs, spirituals, etc. |
