Subject: RE: some John Hartford wonderful From: open mike Date: 28 Aug 09 - 04:25 PM i posted a reply and it is gone.. will try to redo it here. I mill John Hartford. http://www.johnhartford.com/ It does not seem that it was as long ago as 2001 that he died. At least he did not experience 9-11-01 and the aftermath.. that hoje page used to have the coolest picture of him surfing while playing the banjo. His music is often described as Bluegreas but old time would be more accurate, i think. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hartford this fan site has 51 steam boat whistle files http://www.johnhartford.org/ His son Jamie Hartford is a musician too. I rremember a blue grass fest we held in Nevada where John did a detailed workshop on steamboats complete with ilustrations he drew on a chalk board.. i wish there was a picture of that!! I did take a foto of the back of his fiddle once.. it had a wonderful image - like scrimshaw... anhyone got a foto of that ?? i believe my pix were lost in a fire. this was from Strawberry music fest..and i think his son Jamie was very young...12 or 14...and was performing with his dad. OH HERE IS A PICTURE OF THE BACK OF HIS FIDDLE.. http://www.ynoti.net/johnhartford/may09/newsletter-layout-0509.html WITH A PICTURE OF A STEAMBOAT AND THE STATEMENT: NOTHING IS REAL BUT THE RIVER ALL ELSE IS SHAM. |
Subject: RE: some John Hartford wonderful From: catspaw49 Date: 28 Aug 09 - 05:04 PM In addition to the list at the top of this thread, there is also the Hartford Lyric Link which lists many songs and at its top is the link list of indivudual song postings. Mudcat definitely does John Hartford. Also, see some of Art Thieme's stories about John as he worked the river and knew him well. Spaw |
Subject: RE: some John Hartford wonderful From: Art Thieme Date: 28 Aug 09 - 08:37 PM The quote on the back of that fiddle is from a mentor of John's -- Captain Fred Way. Capt. Way was the master and owner of the steamboat BETSY ANN. Art |

Subject: RE: some John Hartford wonderful From: BK Lick Date: 29 Aug 09 - 01:49 AM Here are more links to some pretty grand John Hartford stuff. The two Mountain Stage programs are especially wonderful. |
Subject: RE: some John Hartford wonderful From: open mike Date: 29 Aug 09 - 02:24 AM what program was used to make the ".rar" files? Real audio? |
Subject: RE: some John Hartford wonderful From: BK Lick Date: 29 Aug 09 - 03:02 AM ".rar" files are compressed archive files (in this case of collections of mp3 files). See the Wikipedia article. Free expanders are available for most platforms, e.g., Stuffit Expander. |
Subject: RE: some John Hartford wonderful From: Art Thieme Date: 29 Aug 09 - 03:23 PM The plans for the Betsy Ann were used by Captain Dennis Trone when he designed and built the Steamer (Str.) Julia Belle Swain at the Dubuque, Iowa Boiler Works in 1970. She was the last boat ever built there. |
Subject: RE: some John Hartford wonderful From: Uncle Phil Date: 01 Sep 09 - 09:19 AM There's some wonderful John Hartford on the Down From the Mountain DVD. He MCs a night of music from Oh Brother, Where Art Thou in the Ryman Auditorium. He performs a couple songs and there is some backstage conversation as well. The concert was recorded barely a year before his death. - Phil |
Subject: RE: some John Hartford wonderful From: Elijah Browning Date: 03 Sep 09 - 04:18 PM Had the pleasure of hanging out with John now and then. A few memories on a page at my site here. Just a slight insight into my slight insight of a life broader than my vision. Miss the hell out him and Denny. Just words... River Remembered |
Subject: RE: some John Hartford wonderful From: Art Thieme Date: 04 Sep 09 - 12:09 AM That E.B. guy in the post above is our son, Chris, who worked on the Julia Belle Swain for several summers when he was in high school and college. I was the music and tall tale teller on both the riverboats JBS and the Twilight back in those other times. What better way for a dad to keep watch his kid -- both of us working together like in more rural times when families worked together on the farm. That's how the knowledge got passed from one generation to the next. What better way for him to learn my jokes? It was a grand ten years of life on the Mississippi for me. ---- Now, in these weird times, Chris is a great friend of mine -- as well as being our son. He and Kat keep on making grand-kids for Carol and I to love. Another is on the way as we speak. --- And the story Chris wrote, and linked to, is for real; that's just about how it went down. It's great, for sure, to see the next generation posting at Mudcat. Art/Dad |
