Hello! I heard the old song called Scotland is Waking on an old record, and I could have sworn that I've heard the tune before, but it only says that Jim McLean wrote it. Did he use the tune for another more famous song too?

I used the tune 'Morning has broken' made famouse by Cat Stephens but I knew it as a child in Scotland as 'Child in a Manger' or in Gaelic as 'Leanabh an Aigh' (the blessed child). it was written by a Mary MacDonald, I believe from Bunessan in Mull, where my grandfather came from.

I remember once hearing, but can't recall where, that the hymn Mornning Is Broken was set to the tune of an Irish song called With My Love On The Road. Anyone know that version?

I don't think the lyrics would fit that tune. I can't remember the lyris of With My Love on the Road but somehow I think the last words are something like ''till morning is nigh'.

I had the sonf Scotland Is Waking to the tune Morning has Broken on tape cassette called Scotland First by Alistair MacDonald on Beltona it also had several othe nationalist songs in similar vein such as the SNP Patrol.
Unfortunately some theiving English scumbag stole it and several dozen other cassettes from my car when they stole it in Manchester in 1977. I would dearly love to be able to replace it but have never seen a copy of it since.

MtheGM, since your last post ... four years ago! I remember the hymn you were thinking of which was set to "With my Love on the Road"

Lord of All Hopefulness
Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,
whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy,
be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,
your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.
Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,
whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe,
be there at our labours, and give us, we pray,
your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.
Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,
your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace,
be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,
your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.
Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,
whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm,
be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,
your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.
