Am learning to play Nanci Griffith's song, "Daddy Said". Does anyone know what the first line is referring to: "Oh I used to wish I was a hard-line taker, they'd say six to one half a dozen will break her..." ?? The rest is self-explanatory, but that line is driving me mad.

I don't know what it means, but I hear the line as
"Oh I used to wish I was a hard-line taker who'd say six to one a half a dozen will break her"
and the rest of that line is
"till I fell in love with that young man who sang the blues"
in case that helps anyone figure out what it means.
