Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie One Man Show...NEW From: autoharpbob Date: 17 Sep 09 - 10:00 AM If you get the chance to see Will Kaufman, snap it up. He is superb, though his background in University lecturing may not go well with some people - it did not go down at my folk club with some of the audience. He is a brilliant musician and singer though, and loves his subject. He just talked too much for some of the audience - who proceeded to talk right back over him! See his MySpace - here - for many examples of songs from his show, which I really loved. |
Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie One Man Show...NEW From: billhudson Date: 17 Sep 09 - 05:00 PM My two cents- After watching the video I think he gets it damn close to the way Woody's use to come across and his singing. Besides that Sammy Walker's version of Woody's music is damn good too. Still Pickin' Bill H. |
Subject: Woody Guthrie One Man Show...NEW From: Fan O' Woody Guthrie Date: 17 Sep 09 - 06:51 PM John On The Sunset Coast - I guess it was their first run, Work In Progress sort of thing and it was at the Sidewalk Studio Theatre. I'm emailing them to put some dates up for upcoming shows. They packed the house every night though for the run apparently. I overheard someone at the show saying something about a Grand opening at the Grammy Museum Downtown. We'll see. I'm for sure going to be there for that show. |
Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie One Man Show...NEW From: Stringsinger Date: 18 Sep 09 - 10:43 AM Woody left a legacy. Who can capture him? He was an ornery individual with a specific personality that has been mythologized. He will be on post office stamps. He will be an "institution" for later generations. Most of those who try interpret him didn't even know him personally. I knew him a very short time but on an intimate level as a "pickin' buddy". He had his own set of values. There was "heart" in those values although they ran counter to what many believe would be ethical behavior. Pete knew him very well. That was an odd couple if there ever was one. Woody's legacy will be interpreted and re-interpreted until there is little resemblance to the original person. I guess it's the same with all musical "legends" like Louis Armstrong. Having been exposed to him, it's hard to get those who interpret him for the public. Pete is right though. Better to have that legacy out there even if it's not what it really was. Frank |
Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie One Man Show...NEW From: BB Date: 18 Sep 09 - 02:32 PM I don't think Will Kaufmann's 'Woody Guthrie: Hard Times & Hard Travellin' is actually a version of 'When the Curfew Blows', but I've also heard that it's a great show. Will does describe it as a 'live documentary', so I would expect there to be a fair amount of talk. Shammick Acoustic has booked Will to do it at The George in South Molton, N. Devon, on 20th March. Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie One Man Show...NEW From: Ross Campbell Date: 19 Sep 09 - 12:48 PM I saw one of Will Kaufmann's presentations in Preston earlier in the year. I'd describe it as an illustrated talk with songs and music - maybe not your usual folk club set, but I hope any of our local clubs would find his shows fascinating. Lots of people know a little about Woody Guthrie, but there's always more. Another artist doing this kind of show is David Ferrard - Scottish -Americam based in Edinburgh. He gave his "Woody" set at Fylde recently, I only caught the last couple of songs, but a full room and applause at the end suggested his set was well-received. Ross |
