Here's a weird one, I'm trying to put a collection of songs on tape dealing with flying saucers and/or space - I've come up with CoaCoa beach blues (Eric Von Schmidt) Mr Space man by the Holy Modal rounders and I can loosley remember a song with the lyrics of "You've got to pray to the Lord when you see those Flying Saucers" I think from a fifties "Brothers" style group --any others? (any type of Music!) Thanks

I do remember Flying Purple People Eater. Was real hot stuff, in 1957. (I waz just a wittle kid den.) I do remember seeing dolls, jackets, and special TV apperance of the FPPE. Came out about the same time as the old stand by, "Witch Doctor" (Ooh, Eee, tilla Wall wall ting bang. Or something like that.

John S, you are right about that Flying Saucer song in your first post. It was by the Buchanan Brothers. I think I still have it around somewhere, but I believe it is on a 78, which means I can't play it here, and that's even if can find it in the first place.

in the uk a few years back, a group called the firm released a record called "star trekking", the carpenters "calling occupants of interplanetary craft" should qualify and so .I suppose< would the theme tune to the B.B.C.'s red dwarf another possible is "a spaceman came travelling" by chris deburgh.

I'm new to this list and just jumping in.

The song that comes to mind is the Holy Modal Rounders' "Hey Mister Spaceman" sung to the tune of "Hey Mister Bass Man." I remember the Muppets singing the latter about the time I was introduced to the former. Interesting combination of Kermit the Frog and Peter Stampfel.

Am I the only one who remembers "John Cameron Cameron"? For those who don't, here is an excerpt from a biography of Dickie Goodman:

Then in June 1956, Goodman came up with an idea. "Bill Buchanan and I were writing some songs at the time," said Goodman in a print interview, "trying to break into the business. We were sitting around and suddenly we got an idea. How would it be if we had a disc jockey show being interrupted by reports of a flying saucer - THE FLYING SAUCERS ARE REAL! - and suddenly the Platters line (from "The Great Pretender") came to me - 'Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal' and we said 'Hey!' and we didn't know any better so we put the thing together."

Within a few days, Goodman and Buchanan spliced together a four-minute reworking of Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast. Goodman played "John Cameron Cameron," an unflappable reporter interviewing people, officials and even the Martians themselves. Buchanan was heard as a title-mangling disc jockey (allegedly based on Alan Freed), who interrupted a peppy dance number with news of an invasion from Mars.

Buchanan: We interrupt this record to bring you a special bulletin. The reports of a flying saucer hovering over the city have been confirmed. The flying saucers are real!

And that set the pattern. Goodman would interview eyewitnesses about the spaceship, whose responses were the lyrics of popular songs. Goodman: This is John Cameron Cameron downtown. Pardon me madam, would you tell our audience what would you do if the saucer were to land? Witness: Duck back in the alley (from Little Richard's "Long Tall Sally") Goodman: Thank you. And now the thin gentleman there. Witness: What I'm gonna do ... is hard to tell (from Fats Domino's "Poor Me") Goodman: And the gentleman with the guitar, what would you do sir? Witness: Just take a walk down Lonely Street (from Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel") The record continued. While the flying saucer landed on Earth, Buchanan and Goodman greeted its arrival with more splices, in-jokes and primitive technical wizardry. Goodman: This is John Cameron Cameron on the spot. And now I believe we're about to hear the words of the first spaceman ever to land on earth. Martian: "A WOP BOP A LOO MOP A LOP BAM BOOM" (from Little Richard's "Tutti-Frutti")

There are a couple of others -- one of them is the Holy Modal Rounders, "Heyyyy Mister Spaceman", and the other was --was it the Byrds? -- doing "Gee Mister Spaceman, you sure have started something...." -- I always get fragments of these songs mixed up in my memory ever since the night they stuck those strange needles in me on the mother ship -- those eyes, those eyes, I will never forget!!!

There was one that featured Walter Brennan (who played Grandpappy Amos on the 50s/60s tv show The Real McCoys. He also had countless other roles in many movies). I used to own it on a 45rpm. It was called "Space Mice" and used the technology of the day that enabled us to enjoy Alvin and the Chipmunks for the voices of the space mice who spoke and sang in the song. If I'm not mistaken the flip side was an even more bizarre song called "What Can You Dop With A Thievin' Stranger?" Space Mice would be a challenge to redo from the stage unless you had access to lots of helium.
