Subject: RE: Craig Johnson - CD available From: katlaughing Date: 12 Oct 09 - 07:02 PM Art, my apologies. I saw your other thread and went to transfer your message to this one, but got an error message. I couldn't even retrieve what you had posted. I suspect there may have been two of us clones working on it at the same time. My hope is the other clone, if that is what happened, will be able to resurrect it for you. I should have copied it first just in case. Sorry, my friend. kat |
Subject: RE: Craig Johnson - CD available From: Art Thieme Date: 12 Oct 09 - 08:06 PM People, all of the songs on this CD are renhdered as only Craig can do 'em. He has absolutely one of the most singular voices in all of old timey and trad-based folkie music since bluesman Skip James and/or Kweskin Jug Band vocalists Geoff Muldauer or Bruno Wolf. BUT there is one incandescent song here that only Craig Johnson could've done justice to; And that is his amazing version of the cowboy song OLD PAINT. It is a terribly difficult song to do well!!! That is possibly the reason nobody has ever done it well since Jess Morris recorded it for the old Archive Of Folk Song at the Library of Congress in Washinton D.C. When our son, Chris, was small I'd always leave home and tell him, possibly with a twinkle in my eye, not to play my instruments while we were gone. Knowing he'd be plunking on 'em as soon as the door was shut, I left a guitar and banjo out available for him to pick upon. ---- Well, years ago, as Craig pretty much will tell you, I introduced Mr. Johnson to Mr. Morris' Old Paint. Somehow, it wasn't a total surprise to find it on this CD. Craig Johnson's vocal, with only his fiddle accompanying, is simply stunnng!! I'll be back to talk about the other songs here encased, but for now, I just had to give it's own post to this superlative track. I do hope my other thread gets deleated by Joe -- or anyone. I actually forgot this thread was already here... Recent memory is much impaired of late. Art Thieme |
