Subject: RE: Dominic Behan vinyl Songs of Revolution? From: Thomas Stern Date: 16 Dec 13 - 02:14 PM check the excellent discography by Nick Guida: http://theballadeers.com/db_d01.htm I see only one recording: The Bells Of Hell/The Captains and the Kings: 1959 - Decca 45-F11147 45 It was also on BRENDAN Behans Spoken Arts album: Spoken Arts 760 Brendan Behan sings Irish Folksongs and Ballads liner notes: Luce Arthur Klein Time magazine April 11, 1960 Brendan Behan Sings Irish Folk Songs and Ballads (Spoken Arts). "Sings" is the nonoperative word here; Irish Playwright Behan growls, gurgles and lurches in and out of key like a drunk on a swaying bus ("I usually talk nicer," he concedes, "when I have me teeth"). Nevertheless, he performs with engaging gusto and humor, and with considerably more conviction than most of his folk-styled competition. Side One On the 18th Day of November The Captains and the Kings I Will Give You a Golden Ball Who Fears to Speak of Easter Week I Am a Happy English La (rendered in a wildly improbable parody of an Oxford accent) Don't Muck About With the Moon When Socrates in Ancient Greece Side Two A Bonfire on the Border The Bold Fenian Men The zoological Gardens Home on the Range The Old Triangle Says Herself to Meself O in Glendalough Lived an Old Saint Best wishes, Thomas. |
Subject: RE: Dominic Behan vinyl Songs of Revolution? From: Jim Carroll Date: 16 Dec 13 - 02:14 PM Enjoy, Jim Carroll THE CAPTAINS AND THE KINGS (Brendan Behan) Notes From Brendan Behan's play "The Hostage" the song mocks the arrogance of the English Upper Classes. Evelyn Waugh was one of England's most famous novelists (e.g. Brideshead Revisted), and was famous for his arrogance. Draughts is the English word for what the Americans call "checkers". "The white man's burden" was an expression used to describe the "sacrifices" made by the English to tame the natives in the countries of the British Empire. Great Windsor Park is used by the rich as the home of the upper class game of polo. Lyrics I remember in September, when the final stumps were drawn, And the shouts of crowds now silent when the boys to tea had gone. Let us, oh Lord above us, remember simple things, When all are dead who love us, Oh the Captains and the Kings, When all are dead who love us, Oh the Captains and the Kings. We have many goods for export, Christian ethics and old port But our greatest boast is that Anglo-Saxon is a sport When the darts game is finished, and the boys their game of rings And the draughts and chess relinquished for the captains and the kings And the draughts and chess relinquished for the captains and the kings Far away in dear old Cyprus, or in Kenya's dusty land, Where all bear the white man's burden in many a strange land. As we look across our shoulder, in West Belfast the school bell rings, And we sigh for dear old England, and the Captains and the Kings. And we sigh for dear old England, and the Captains and the Kings. In our dreams we see old Harrow, and we hear the crows load caw At the flower show our big marrow takes the pride from Evelyn Waugh. Cups of tea and some dry sherry, vintage cars, these simple things So let`s drink up and be marry, for the captains and the kings So let`s drink up and be marry, for the captains and the kings As I wandered in a nightmare all around Great Windsor Park, Now what did you think I found there as I wandered in the dark? It was an apple half-bitten, and sweetest of all things, Five baby teeth had written of the Captains and the Kings. Five baby teeth had written of the Captains and the Kings. By the moon that shines above us in the misty morn and night Let us cease to run ourselves down and praise God that we are white And better still are English, tea and toast and muffin rings And old ladies with stirned faces and the captains and the kings And old ladies with stirned faces and the captains and the kings. |

Subject: Lyr Add: KELVIN LASS (Dominic Behan) From: Jim McLean Date: 30 Jan 10 - 11:08 AM hmillar, here are the lyrics to Kelvin Lass by Dominic. The tune is Cailin Deas, or rather a variation on it as adapted by Dominic. KELVIN LASS (Dominic Behan) There's a girl that I love With dark brown curls, And eyes of the blue-green sea, From her sparkling teeth to her tiny feet, She's the only lass for me. When I fold my arms around her magic charms, And feel her pulse beat fast, Then I always know where'er I go, I will take my Kelvin Lass. Many times did I rove through Kelvin Grove, When the sweetest flowers had sprung, But none more rare than my lass so fair, Was ever there among. No rose could vie beneath the sky To be mirrored in the glass, Where walked my girl, my radiant pearl, My lovely kelvin lass. Could she walk as my bride by Kelvin's side, And together hand in hand Share with me the world to be I would see a fairy land. Never more to pine for that heart so fine, 'Twould be dreaming come to pass, In my breast, I vow to love as now, Forever my Kelvin Lass. I can read but not write ABC notation but if you like I can send you a scan of the music. |

Subject: RE: Dominic Behan vinyl Songs of Revolution? From: Effsee Date: 12 Nov 09 - 03:42 PM I'm looking at a LP at the moment by Dominic Behan, titled "Rebellion", NPL 18139, Pye Records Ltd., 1966. Is this the one you're asking about? It has a reproduction of the Proclamation on the rear cover and a photo/painting of the inside of the GPO on the front. |
Subject: Dominic Behan vinyl Songs of Revolution? From: Thompson Date: 12 Nov 09 - 02:31 PM Does anyone have a copy of this record? Not sure of the exact title, but it's something like Songs of Revolution and Revolt, or Songs of Revolt, or Songs of Revolution; the singer is Dominic Behan, and the Sean Treacy song that starts "Give me a Parabellum..." is one of the tracks. It was a Topic Records production, by the way. |
