Does anyone know what Jim Lloyd is doing nowadays? It's just that I've been reflecting on the fact that Bedford Folk Club will celebrate it's 45th. anniversary next March and that people from the club used to go to the one that Jim ran in those days although I have to confess that I've forgotten the name of the town where he held it!!

He and Frances Line went to live in Tasmania on retirement.

Ah, I didn't know that. Thank you, Diane. They were friends of Valerie's & mine at one time, about 70s-80s; but we lost touch, as will happen.

As well as the Folk On 2 ID in the thread Subject, he was for a while EFDSS Director too, wasn't he?

Wonder why Tasmania, btw - could hardly have gone any further away could they? Hope it wasn't something I said!

I think the last time I saw Jim Lloyd in the flesh was actually at a Nationa Folk Music Festival in Sutton Bonington ... and this thread has solved a slight curiosity as to what became of him.

Jim now lives in Attadale, Western Australia. He comes over to England on a visit most years. In 1964, he started the Northampton Troubadour Folk Club.

Hi everyone
Does anyone know what the exact title of Jim Lloyd’s Folk on 2 signature tune? , c early 1980s. All I know is that it features John Kirkpatrick on melodeon/accordion with accompaniment by a folk-rock group, it opens with a peal on drums, and it is in the key of E Minor (??). Many thanks if anyone can let me know, all the best??

Apols for typos and rather bad grammar everyone, please take out the word ‘what’ in last message. Double question marks in brackets were meant to be emojis, which obviously don’t work on Mudcat. Cheers, E

Here's a link to a clip of the intro to Folk on 2 with the tune Ewan would like the name to. The tune starts about 20 seconds in.

Probably not Catharsis by Amy Cann - copyright date is 1988 whereas the sound clip is from 1980.

Jim Lloyd was indeed at one time Director of EFDSS.

Good to know that he and Frances are still around although a long way away. WA is slightly nearer than Tasmania so maybe they got slightly homesick - buit obviously not enough to want to return to our wonderful climate.

Jim, incidentally, was inadvertantly instrumental in Whitby Folk Week distancing itself from the EFDSS. My lips are sealed!

To clarify a much earlier message from me, and therefore correct Malcolm's message, Jim Lloyd and Frances Line are no longer together. Frances lives in Kent or Sussex I think, and attended, so I am told, Pete Shutler's (of The Yetties) funeral several years ago. I don't think that, because of his health, he still visits the UK.

I can remember Folk on 2 when the opening tune was Fairport's 'The Lark In The Morning' and the closing tune was a hornpipe by The Dubliners, I forget which one, either Harvest Home or Chief O'Neill's Favourite.

Funny how tastes change, I used to be an avid listener to Jim. Maybe my circumstances were changing, and interest fading but when Mike Harding took over it was not so important to make time for the show. Now it is on in the background when I am at the GF's, and I hear the music but not the talk.

Didn't Jim have a Talk Show on Midlands TV in the 60's?

Does anyone remember Jim Lloyd presenting a "top 20" folk songs, possibly near the end of his tenure, voted for by the listeners?
Id love to have a copy of the list, if anyone has it.

I should have it on an old cassette somewhere in the loft. It will probably take a while to find it but Nick Caffrey is going through my collection looking for interesting stuff so he will find it eventually.

Jim used to be Wally Whyton's co-presenter on Country Meets Folk. I used to attend the recordings of this show every Saturday at the Playhouse Theatre. Saw some great names!

Jim also did TV's Wish You Were Here holiday show.

I think 'Country meets Folk' was the programme that Bob Davenport & the Marsden Rattlers did a couple of times.
I do recall Bob being told that we couldn't do 'Memphis Tennessee' because it wasn't 'folk'- it wasn't country either depending on your definitions of course!

Whatever anyone says about Jim Lloyd, folk music on BBC Radio 2 has gone to pot since Jim left, Mike Harding was doing OK so the BBC got rid of him too.

The truth of the matter is that the BBC hates folk music.

Jim Lloyd was a gentleman, who knew whereof he spoke.
I too used to go to the Playhouse on Saturdays Bazzie, went drinking afterwards with a few well known folkies too. A pub called the Sherlock Holmes was, as I remember, the watering hole of choice. My abiding memory is of the ever present Brian Brocklehurst the bass player to every act that played there.

John, I used to go there also, in the pub after the show. I used Brocklehurst as a session bass player on many LPs I produced.

Correct. And the Beeb NEVER ever archived the folk programmes it put out.

But its the left wing snowflake democrat luvvies that don't like folk music or Brit. comedy or indeed anything to do with British culture for that matter - and they've infiltrated everywhere ... The Beeb and other channels are full of them.

Every programme that is remotely un-pc is 'shortened' by judicious editing incl. many repeated old comedy shows on R4X.

But folk music and song and dance and comedy is haram so be warned and prepared for the situation to get much worse ... soon they'll be nothing to watch or listen to.
