Just taking a straw poll...

...anybody fancy an early evening singaround in Central London?

I'm thinking that by starting at 7pm (or earlier? 6.30? 6.15?) we commuters could have a couple of hours and still be home at not-too-late-o'clock. Your input gratefully received but here's my initial thoughts:

I've identified a perfect venue: quiet upstairs bar, not too big, not too small. It's at the north end of Waterloo Bridge so ideal for those commuting into Waterloo and Charing Cross. Handy for tube lines to everywhere else. End of The Strand adjacent to Covent Garden/Aldwych.

We can have it for free on quiet nights (i.e. probably Mondays unless a paying customer wants to pay real money for it)

Bombardier and London Pride on tap. The Pride is excellent.

I could perhaps bring a "house" guitar.

I'm working in Somerset House for a few months, so it'd be - for me, at any rate - an occasional and probably short-term commitment. But I'd be more than happy to set up a trial one-off and take it from there.

Realistically, we might be looking at the new year, but I'm sort of hoping we could squeeze in Monday 30th November if there's enough interest.

Your constructive thoughts more than welcome. But, more than that, your strong commitment to support it would be excellent!

Definitely. I work in Shellmex House, 80 Strand. Is that the Savoy Tup you're thinking of? I've often thought of going in there and asking about putting on acoustic gigs... I even have a travel guitar under my desk, which can be whipped out at a moment's notice for lunchtime practice in the basement. Send me a PM - keep us posted!

I work at a Museum locally and this sounds good I will put a notice up regarding the event in the Museums mess room has we have a host of folk talent that work at the museum.
Also its only round the corner for us. Before I put up notice which will be my next shift(I do night security 3 on 4 off could you please confirm the times for the event. I hope this gets off the ground I am looking forward to it

I've opted to go for a "start singing" time of 6.15: although I'll probably get there more like 6. I expect people will drift in (and out) pretty constantly throughout the following couple of hours (or more!). And that's fine. We won't be chastising late arrivals or early leavers. In a way, that's the whole point of it: to be "commuter friendly". Plus, being free to get in, there's no need to "get your money's worth".

There are no dress code expectations, Morris-ey, although the wearing of flip-flops and shorts may make the wearer feel conspicuous. There is no expectation on when people should get there or for how long they stay. It's commuter friendly with the accent on friendly. Even those who pop in for a quick half and "merely" join in on a chorus or two will be most welcome. There is only one rule: that everyone is respectfully quiet during turns.

Question is, as a greying 35-year-old, can I still pass muster as a student to stroll past the security guard? I figure I'm scruffy enough to exude a 'mature student' aura - I do work in book publishing after all.

so what happens if there is a paying customer? It might be a good idea to negotiate how much notice the landlord will give you - if you are providing him with regular drinkers he ought to be willing to give you some security.

Many imponderables at the mo, Mo. If we have a full room of free-spending, free-thinking, free-singing, free-drinking happy punters and punterettes then we'll be in a strong position. If there's only three or four of us sipping a half to make it last all night, then our position will be a little less strong...

...weekly might be pushing things. Maybe fortnightly. As I said in the first post it's a trial one-off for now and we'll take it from there.

Some posters have already said they'll come in January or March or not Mondays so there are all sorts of possibilities.

Trouble is, on the few occasions I have done this before, having slipped back into usual automatic-commuter-zombie mode I have been known to leave my fiddle on the train. Fortunately due to a lot of luck and having some personal contacts with railway staff I have managed to retrieve them again, but I'm sure my luck will run out at some point.

Thanks for that, Terry. Yes - great fun indeed. We had a maximum of 13 people - 11 singers and two non-combatants - in the room and a great mix of material and styles. Loads of choruses, great banter.

And the venue is perfect. Just the right size, cosy enough but plenty of room to not be bashing instruments on hard objects. Plenty of chairs with no arms, too, for instrumental convenience! Nice and quiet, great acoustics. Beer was indeed superb.

And the main objective - that of spending enough behind the bar to make sure we'll be welcomed back - was achieved due in no small part to Woodsie and Peter ;-)

So, yes, a more than promising intial foray and I'm looking forward to another early in the new year.

Well, Stallion, the quick answer is this: dunno.

They won't be as often as weekly. They'll be at least monthly. It depends on a number of imponderables. Like the state of the pub's diary (football and other private functions and whatever) and the state of my diary (unless someone else(s) want to share the responsibility of the not very onerous tasks involved in liaising with the pub and being there to kick proceedings off.)

We haven't necessarily settled on a day of the week, although Mondays look favourite because of football (they don't have Sky who do Monday matches)

I sort of have my eye on Monday 11th January for the next one.

Well done to Hamish for organising the event it was a great evening in a great little pub with friendly bar staff.
I even got a free pint at the end of the night, Now that is a rare thing a free pint.
It was good to see everyone and to meet new folk, Excellent singers/players. well done.
I hope this venue continues into the New Year and that more folk attend.
Finally it was good to see the night out with Leadfingers, Woodsie and Co who stayed and kept us company right through to closing time.
