Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Pierre Le Chapeau Date: 02 Dec 09 - 02:44 PM Well done to Hamish for organising the event it was a great evening in a great little pub with friendly bar staff. I even got a free pint at the end of the night, Now that is a rare thing a free pint. It was good to see everyone and to meet new folk, Excellent singers/players. well done. I hope this venue continues into the New Year and that more folk attend. Finally it was good to see the night out with Leadfingers, Woodsie and Co who stayed and kept us company right through to closing time. Kind regards to all and I look forward to the next one, Pierre Le Chapeau. |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Surreysinger Date: 02 Dec 09 - 10:00 AM Thanks for photos ... only two people I recognise there .. Sally M and Leadfingers. Looks like a nice venue. |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: GUEST,Essex Girl Date: 02 Dec 09 - 09:19 AM Sounds Good to me. I'll stay the course next time, and meanwhile pass the word to ehe Non-Mudcatters. |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Hamish Date: 02 Dec 09 - 08:15 AM SeaJane and all the others of you who have expressed interest or just lurked... ...I've just booked the next one for Monday 11th January. PM me with an e-mail address and I'll send you a reminder a few days before. |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: seaJane Date: 02 Dec 09 - 07:13 AM Damn. I could have been there but forgot. Another time maybe. |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: matt milton Date: 02 Dec 09 - 05:33 AM Hi all Yes, good time had by all I think. Rachel only left when she did cos she'd been up since 5 that morning. Thanks for the pics! |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Hamish Date: 02 Dec 09 - 04:07 AM Well, Stallion, the quick answer is this: dunno. They won't be as often as weekly. They'll be at least monthly. It depends on a number of imponderables. Like the state of the pub's diary (football and other private functions and whatever) and the state of my diary (unless someone else(s) want to share the responsibility of the not very onerous tasks involved in liaising with the pub and being there to kick proceedings off.) We haven't necessarily settled on a day of the week, although Mondays look favourite because of football (they don't have Sky who do Monday matches) I sort of have my eye on Monday 11th January for the next one. |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: stallion Date: 02 Dec 09 - 03:44 AM How often are these sessions going to be? |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Mick Woods Date: 02 Dec 09 - 01:16 AM Have a look at Hamish's Myspace some great video footage of his performance at Gainsborough Folk Festival. |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: GUEST,BBP still at work Date: 01 Dec 09 - 11:19 AM Yep, Terry Lead-digits was acting very suspiciously and the idea of Hamish being "outed" is more than a little amusing. Deirdre the Invisible |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: evansakes Date: 01 Dec 09 - 10:40 AM Hamish can be officially outed as the bearded bloke playing the guitar (in the dark jumper). There are two men in hats...and even though I haven't seen him in years the more hirsute one looks suspiciously like Terry Silver. |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Smedley Date: 01 Dec 09 - 10:37 AM Bien sur - et quel chapeau! |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: GUEST Date: 01 Dec 09 - 10:25 AM Unsurprisingly enough, the man in the hat is 'Pierre Le Chapeau'... |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Smedley Date: 01 Dec 09 - 10:20 AM So is that Hamish in the hat ?? |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: GUEST,SallyM Date: 01 Dec 09 - 10:16 AM Yes, well done Hamish, great pub, great beer, great evening, and good to put some faces to mudcat names. I look forward to the next one. Sal the Gal |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Mick Woods Date: 01 Dec 09 - 06:42 AM Correction there were 14! |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Mick Woods Date: 01 Dec 09 - 06:22 AM Thanks for organising this Hamish. Myself, Pete, Chris & Terry stayed 'til closing, hic ... time! Here are a few Pictures looking forward to the next one! |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: GUEST,BBP at work and bleary-eyed Date: 01 Dec 09 - 06:09 AM Nice to meet you last night when I dropped by unexpectedly. Pity I was second one there after Hamish - the look of surprise on his face was a picture and you all missed it!. Just sorry I could only stay the hour before heading back to deepest, darkest Lincolnshire. Still, was home by 11.15pm which was earlier than I'd thought possible. Hope it keeps going. Deirdre |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: GUEST,Dave Kenningham Date: 01 Dec 09 - 04:46 AM Thank you. A superb session in a marvelous venue. See in the new year. |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: GUEST Date: 01 Dec 09 - 04:33 AM That was fun! Thanks for organising it, Hamish - will definitely try to make the next one. Andy the non-combatant |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Hamish Date: 01 Dec 09 - 04:16 AM Thanks for that, Terry. Yes - great fun indeed. We had a maximum of 13 people - 11 singers and two non-combatants - in the room and a great mix of material and styles. Loads of choruses, great banter. And the venue is perfect. Just the right size, cosy enough but plenty of room to not be bashing instruments on hard objects. Plenty of chairs with no arms, too, for instrumental convenience! Nice and quiet, great acoustics. Beer was indeed superb. And the main objective - that of spending enough behind the bar to make sure we'll be welcomed back - was achieved due in no small part to Woodsie and Peter ;-) So, yes, a more than promising intial foray and I'm looking forward to another early in the new year. ~8^) |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Leadfingers Date: 30 Nov 09 - 07:02 PM NO eggs or shakers , and no Tune sets , but bloody good fun !! Pub was happy ,next one probably after Christmas . |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Surreysinger Date: 30 Nov 09 - 06:47 PM I'm intrigued ... the first posting suggested that this was an early evening singaround. And yet at the end we have talk about bringing tambourines, percussion and shakers - doesn't sound like any singaround I've ever been to.Nevertheless, hope it went well for you! |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Pistachio Date: 30 Nov 09 - 10:21 AM Grand idea - I hope you have a great first session - Shame I'm up in Yorkshire. Let us know how it works out! Hazel. |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Hamish Date: 30 Nov 09 - 06:01 AM David K*, Old Shep: you'll both be most very welcome. And, Matt, I couldn't see the emoticon after your "Then clean forgot". *David K, eh? Stipe me nadgers. What are you doing in these latitudes? |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: matt milton Date: 30 Nov 09 - 05:58 AM Mr Shep You'll be most welcome. I've actually packed a few songbooks myself just in case anyone wants any accompaniment, or feels in need of some inspiration |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: matt milton Date: 30 Nov 09 - 05:26 AM I meant to bring a few tambourines and shakers, as I often think percussion's sorely lacking at sessions. Then clean forgot. I'll be there around five past. I have a banjo. I have a cheap Ashbury resonator mandolin. It's gonna be fun. |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: OldShep Date: 30 Nov 09 - 05:24 AM Greeting from a newcomer to the site. This sounds like an excellent idea and if you don't mind someone who has come back to folk after about 30yrs absence and needs to refer to his word book then... May I come along? |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: GUEST,Dave K Date: 30 Nov 09 - 05:22 AM See you tonight. Sounds like it is going to be an excellent session. |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Hamish Date: 30 Nov 09 - 04:32 AM Good man, Woodsie! (Hmmm... could be "Good, woman, Woodsie" but it just feels like a chap's type of nickname.) Well I feel like an intrepid explorer having survived the trials of two cancelled trains, wind and rain, yomping over the sodden (sodding?) ground with my various packs of life support and guitar strapped fore and aft... ...but all present and correct, suh! I'll be there from about 6, first song at about quarter past... ~8^) |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: GUEST,woodsie Date: 30 Nov 09 - 03:29 AM I'm hoping to attend this! |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Hamish Date: 29 Nov 09 - 02:53 PM This time tomorrow we'll be in full swing. Just heard of a couple more all-but-definites. I have a good feeling about it. See you there!! ~8^) |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: stallion Date: 28 Nov 09 - 03:42 PM refresh |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: GUEST,SallyM Date: 27 Nov 09 - 06:57 AM Don't worry, I'll try and remember to bring one in, but thanks anyway Matt. Trouble is, on the few occasions I have done this before, having slipped back into usual automatic-commuter-zombie mode I have been known to leave my fiddle on the train. Fortunately due to a lot of luck and having some personal contacts with railway staff I have managed to retrieve them again, but I'm sure my luck will run out at some point. Maybe I'll just stick to unaccomplished singing. Sal |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: matt milton Date: 27 Nov 09 - 05:39 AM well, I suppose I could in theory bring a fiddle. I was planning on bringing a banjo and mandolin, which others are welcome to use. Carrying 3 instruments is a bit of a stretch, but I've done it before and will no doubt do it again. Put it this way: are you definitely coming? |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Hamish Date: 27 Nov 09 - 05:19 AM A house fiddle? I think Matt is bringing a mandolin. Not sure if he'll be willing to lend it out, but perhaps if I vouch for your suitability, Sal... |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: GUEST Date: 27 Nov 09 - 05:13 AM - oh, and I was hoping for a bit of chastising as well !! Any chance of a 'house' fiddle as well ? Sal the Gal :-) |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Hamish Date: 27 Nov 09 - 03:54 AM Thanks, Pierre. Just a final reminderette for those of you who might be planning to come on Monday and who only access the web from work... Yes, it's The Savoy Tup in Savoy Street. Yes, it starts at 6.15pm. Yes, you can arrive earlier if you like. No, you won't be reprimanded for turning up late. Nor will you be chastised for leaving early. Yes, there will be a very decent 'house' guitar available. Yes, it's in the upstairs room, so: No, we won't be mixing with "half cut suits who have been lording it up all afternoon" See you Monday! Don't forget to arrange your pass with whomsover issues you with these items!! Cheers Hamish ~8^) |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Pierre Le Chapeau Date: 26 Nov 09 - 01:25 PM Despite My last Mudcat thread entitled "Folk Sushhhhhing Folk" and all the Rigmorole and Hot Air that went with it I am confident that Caters, singers and musicans will be considerate to all performers, Although half cut suits that have been Lording it up all afternoon well I cannot speak for them. Posters are up in Museum Mess room feed back is little at moment but from experience It will get better nearer the time, Kind regards to all Pierre. |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: GUEST,MC Fat (at work) Date: 26 Nov 09 - 06:46 AM Best of luck Hamish sounds a great idea |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: GUEST,BBP at work Date: 26 Nov 09 - 06:18 AM Hope it goes well. Just watch out when Hamish starts heaving............ |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Hamish Date: 25 Nov 09 - 02:40 PM I popped in two Mondays ago early evening and it was heaving... ...but the more the better (and merrier!) |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: GUEST,Essex Girl Date: 25 Nov 09 - 01:47 PM Popped in there for a quick drink at lunchtime today. I'm not surprised they want us there as there were only 4 other people in the downstairs bar! Hopefully I will be bringing a couple more bodies with me. |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 25 Nov 09 - 01:08 PM "can I still pass muster as a student to stroll past the security guard?" If questioned, just ask casually where the Dean's office is (or some such thing..) Never paid yet to get into Kings Cambridge - but then the man I've visited with (& who's blagged the security) does have a confident public school persona, teamed with suitably scruffy appearance. |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 25 Nov 09 - 12:44 PM Looks like one I could pencil in at a later date sometime. Be nice to meet up with a fresh bunch of 'Catters too. Hope it's a goer. |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Hamish Date: 25 Nov 09 - 03:51 AM Bolleaux!!! CORRECTION It's 2 Savoy Street. Hopefully the correct post code will have already pointed out my rather basic error and not confused you too much. How embarrassing... |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Leadfingers Date: 24 Nov 09 - 07:46 AM Well Pubic Transport means I cvan drink as muh as I like - Or can AFFORD , thinking about London Beer Prices . |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Hamish Date: 24 Nov 09 - 06:44 AM Many imponderables at the mo, Mo. If we have a full room of free-spending, free-thinking, free-singing, free-drinking happy punters and punterettes then we'll be in a strong position. If there's only three or four of us sipping a half to make it last all night, then our position will be a little less strong... ...weekly might be pushing things. Maybe fortnightly. As I said in the first post it's a trial one-off for now and we'll take it from there. Some posters have already said they'll come in January or March or not Mondays so there are all sorts of possibilities. |
Subject: RE: Central London commuters' singaround? From: Mo the caller Date: 24 Nov 09 - 06:35 AM Good luck with it, (bit far from Cheshire) Is it going to be every week? You said "We can have it for free on quiet nights (i.e. probably Mondays unless a paying customer wants to pay real money for it)" so what happens if there is a paying customer? It might be a good idea to negotiate how much notice the landlord will give you - if you are providing him with regular drinkers he ought to be willing to give you some security. |
