Subject: RE: Robin Hoods Bay Folk Club - Smashin From: GUEST,Banjiman Date: 16 Sep 12 - 07:58 AM Ah RHB Folk Club........ we got snowed in after a gig there a couple of years ago. Lovely clear evening when we arrived...... 4 inches on snow by the end of the night and no chance of getting the car up the hill. Luckily being reasonably local a friend of mine has a cottage there and he'd been at the gig. He'd (jokingly) said to just knock on his door if we got stuck. His face was a picture 40 mins later when we turned up after sliding down both hills out. We'd left the kids with a 16 y/o babysitter who we had to phone (from the top car park, no reception down in The Bay) and ask her to stay over. Her Dad was not amused! I don't think he quite believed we were really stuck as there was no snow at home despite being less than 50 miles away. still, we laugh about it now...... and we're back there on Nov 16th! |

Subject: Robin Hoods Bay Folk Club - Smashin From: Silas Date: 21 Nov 09 - 10:45 AM Last night we had the enormous pleasure of attending the above. If anyone wants to know how to run a folk club these days, then take a lesson from here. We arrived at 8.30,the start time to find that the room was already more than half full (a bit different from our local club!)WE were made very welcome and the entry was free. They have a raffle to cover cost of the guest singers that they occasionally have. We were asked if we wanted to sing or play, and although I didn't,Mrs Silas dropped out the information that I had my guitar in the cottage that we were staying in and I was very nearly persuaded to go and get it, but, luckily for the locals, I managed to resist the temptation. It was a singers night, but the quality of the singers and musicians was really outstanding, everyone who wanted a go was given at least three opportunities to perform. The 'chair' was very democratic and managed to give us a really good mixture of styles and standards. And, believe it or not, I was sitting opposite Mike and Anne Waterson who both sang wonderfully. Brilliant night, so thanks everyone at Robin HoodsBay, can't wait to come back! |
