Ah RHB Folk Club........ we got snowed in after a gig there a couple of years ago. Lovely clear evening when we arrived...... 4 inches on snow by the end of the night and no chance of getting the car up the hill.

Luckily being reasonably local a friend of mine has a cottage there and he'd been at the gig. He'd (jokingly) said to just knock on his door if we got stuck. His face was a picture 40 mins later when we turned up after sliding down both hills out.

We'd left the kids with a 16 y/o babysitter who we had to phone (from the top car park, no reception down in The Bay) and ask her to stay over. Her Dad was not amused! I don't think he quite believed we were really stuck as there was no snow at home despite being less than 50 miles away.

still, we laugh about it now...... and we're back there on Nov 16th!

Jimmyt - you might like to check out Mickleby folk club ( at The White Hart, Mickleby, about 8 miles north of Whitby) which happens every Saturday night.

Glad I read this. Hope to get down when Lynne & Pat are there.
For those whingeing about hills there is a less steep slope round by the sea wall though there are steps and dark.

I will be in Robinhood's Bay on Friday Oct 19, and would like to attend the folk evening and perhaps bring my whistles along for a little playing "along" Does anyone have a contact email from someone there I can contact to basically make sure it is ok for me to come along a do a little quiet playing? I am from the states so I am not sure of the protocol but I would rather overdo the "manners" than underdo them any help will be appreciated   jimmyt!

Robin Hood's Bay has just lost very sadly one of the founders and staunch supporters of the folk club, Brian Krengel.
(Obit thread http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=12467 )
A concert in memory of Brian will be held in Robin Hood's Bay at the Swell in Chapel Street on Sunday 13th December from 3pm.
More details on the Robin Hood's Bay Folk Club website - link on post above.

Sounds if it will be worth a visit from West Yorkshire.
Could you please tell me when it is usually held and I assume it is in the historic building to the left of the beech access.

Dick, it's not the walk there that kills, it's the walk back!

I walk, and I walked three miles from HAWSKER,to get to the gig,not bad for someone who is 58.

It is a wonderful place with a mixture of folkies and tourists who seem genuinely thrilled at the music. We had a lovely gig there and learnt a valuable lesson_ find someone with a car to drive you up that bloody hill afterwards!

Any time I've been to Whitby Folk Week, getting down to the song session in Robin Hood's Bay is a high point.

Last night we had the enormous pleasure of attending the above.

If anyone wants to know how to run a folk club these days, then take a lesson from here. We arrived at 8.30,the start time to find that the room was already more than half full (a bit different from our local club!)WE were made very welcome and the entry was free. They have a raffle to cover cost of the guest singers that they occasionally have. We were asked if we wanted to sing or play, and although I didn't,Mrs Silas dropped out the information that I had my guitar in the cottage that we were staying in and I was very nearly persuaded to go and get it, but, luckily for the locals, I managed to resist the temptation.

It was a singers night, but the quality of the singers and musicians was really outstanding, everyone who wanted a go was given at least three opportunities to perform. The 'chair' was very democratic and managed to give us a really good mixture of styles and standards.

And, believe it or not, I was sitting opposite Mike and Anne Waterson who both sang wonderfully.

Brilliant night, so thanks everyone at Robin HoodsBay, can't wait to come back!
