Subject: RE: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 (UK) From: Surreysinger Date: 06 Dec 09 - 12:35 PM Having spoken to my sister, and to the nice Mr Heath this afternoon on getting back from climes North of London, I can verify that it was a stunningly good evening (sob, gulp!! still gutted to have missed it). A very nearly full house, and continuing WELL past normal finishing up time. Quote from sister "I didn't want it to end!" . I gather that people turned up from quite some distance away, and that the gathered congregation turned in some good chorus singing .All good news in terms of the club ... perhaps not what I wanted to hear as someone who had been looking forward to the evening for quite some time !! Thanks for the kind words Kitty - it was fun to present the show again - and nice to hear the chorus to the carol at the end being sung with gusto. It (almost) makes up for missing the Wilsons ... sigh. (And a spooky point - I'd forgotten until my sister reminded me that the Walter Rose, after whom the room we were in was named, was actually a member of our family on my mum's side (what it is to have a geneaologist in the family!!) |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 (UK) From: GUEST,Ron Date: 06 Dec 09 - 10:32 AM Excellent! best night for years, room was full and the Wilsons had them all singing, it was brilliant.(Betsy look after them till there next visit) |

Subject: RE: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 (UK) From: GUEST,Jo Date: 03 Dec 09 - 08:21 AM The Wilson Family - "They are what they are they do what they do they say what they say and it's very direct and I love that. They're not Pretenders." - Dick Gaughan. That sums them up for me. As well as Lovely, Powerful, Honest, singing with a great sense of humour. |

Subject: RE: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 (UK) From: GUEST,The Hog's Back Date: 02 Dec 09 - 03:22 AM The thought of the Wilson Family spending an evening in Surrey drinking TEA is an intriguing one! |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 (UK) From: Surreysinger Date: 01 Dec 09 - 04:37 PM News hot off the press - Chris Wilson is now going to be in the line-up for Guildford. (Originally he did not think he would be able to make it due to recuperation from his hip operation). So it will be a five strong line-up on Friday ... even more reason not to miss it!!!! (and even more reason for me to feel fed up ... don't know whether to put a smiley or a gripey emoticon substitute there). Be there or be square ??? |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 (UK) From: GUEST,Ron Date: 01 Dec 09 - 02:07 PM Sounds good! |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 (UK) From: Surreysinger Date: 30 Nov 09 - 08:48 PM Old Vermin ... you will be missing a treat. Definitely the wrong choice on your part. If I wasn't gigging elsewhere there's no way that I would be missing this one!!! (For those wondering, Tea doesn't come in a cup and saucer, but in a bottle in this instance - Hogs Back Brewery's finest!) |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 (UK) From: GUEST,Old vermin Date: 30 Nov 09 - 08:35 PM if you do go, have the T.E.A, not the red wine. Or coffee of course. We're, we hope, doing carols elsewhere. Terribly difficult, not being able to be in two places at once. |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 (UK) From: Surreysinger Date: 30 Nov 09 - 01:43 PM Probably best to buy in advance as our club quite often sells out before the night. See the link above - they can be ordered online if you want to use a card - otherwise you can ring Lawrence Heath to reserve tickets, and send him a cheque in payment - details are all on the relevant website. |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 (UK) From: GUEST Date: 30 Nov 09 - 09:42 AM Will we require tickets? |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 (UK) From: Surreysinger Date: 29 Nov 09 - 05:45 PM I wish Kitty ... believe me I was racking my brains to try and find out how to ... but the logistics make it far more sensible to travel up to Herts on the Friday to rehearse Friday, so that we can get along to the Festival and enjoy some of it on Saturday before we do our thing in the evening!! (I hate being sensible) ... maybe I can find some way of making it back from Walthamstow in January (although I've looked at timings and locations and it looks a bit iffy by public transport). Can we tempt you down to Guildford on the Friday yourself??? (Look forward to seeing you on Saturday of course.) |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 (UK) From: Herga Kitty Date: 29 Nov 09 - 03:28 PM Surreysinger - couldn't you and Ralphie work out somewhere to practise for your gig here that would allow you to hear the Wilsons in Guildford? See you next Saturday Kitty |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 (UK) From: GUEST,Ron Date: 29 Nov 09 - 07:23 AM It will be good to see the Wilsons in London again, We first saw them down here in the Seventies and the last time they were here was at C.Sharp house, for Fred Jordan's Memorial concert where they brought the house down, even the e.f.d.s.s. bods were stamping their feet! Excellent can't wait. |

Subject: RE: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 (UK) From: The Sandman Date: 23 Nov 09 - 01:08 PM I had the honour of playing their club recently,a great club some great singers as well as The Wilsons,THE Wilsons are good,so was their uncle Harold,he wasnt much good as a singer but he was great with his pipes. |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 (UK) From: GUEST,Peter Date: 23 Nov 09 - 12:42 PM We saw them earlier on in the year down here in the West Country, (just a little bit further south than london) they were fantastic. Bodmin club was the fullest I've ever seen, Brilliant! |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 (UK) From: melodeonboy Date: 23 Nov 09 - 03:21 AM "....it's not that often that they come this far south". Indeed. I've got a gig that night, so I won't be able to come. Are they doing any other gigs down south, or will I have to wait another ten years before I can see them again? |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 (UK) From: Surreysinger Date: 22 Nov 09 - 08:06 PM I'll second all you have to say about them English Folkfan ... and I was overjoyed to find out that they would be coming to our club. The sad thing is that I personally have to miss them, as I shall be travelling north of London to rehearse that night before a gig of my own. However, I'd urge anyone that can to get there, as it's not that often that they come this far south. I've thoroughly enjoyed hearing them in action at Whitby folk week over the last six or seven years in both formal and very informal situations and would recommend them to anyone who hasn't yet seen them and likes acappella singing. |
Subject: RE: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 From: EnglishFolkfan Date: 22 Nov 09 - 03:19 PM Alas, too far South East for me but you are in for a decidedly wonderful time. The Wilson's are stalwarts of Shrewsbury Folk Festival's line up and we thoroughly enjoy many a lung stretching side achingly heart warmingly friendly time over those four days. Great stories and an incredible repertoire, lively banter, brilliant taste in ale and, for me, a welcome reminder of 8 years living in their neck of the woods. A super start to the aural traditions of the coming Season - Greetings all. |
Subject: The Wilson Family, Guildford Dec 4 2009 From: Surreysinger Date: 22 Nov 09 - 02:29 PM The Wilson family consists of sister Pat and brothers Tom, Chris, Steve, Ken and Mike, all members of the same family from Teesside in the North East of England. On December 4th the Music Institute Club in Guildford,Surrey will be hosting Tom,Steve, Ken and Mike from the family - who are each fine singers in their own right.Regarded by many as the foremost acappella group on the folk scene, the Wilsons sing traditionally oriented songs in unaccompanied harmony, like to have a bit of a laugh and wash it all down with a few odd pints. An evening and a treat not to be missed, as the family do not come this far south very often. We'd love you to come along in your droves and help to swell the Wilson Wall of Sound !!! ..................................................................... "The Northern Wilsonia - a vocal orchestra..." - Peter Bellamy "one of the foremost harmony groups entertaining folk audiences today" - Roy Harris "They are among the people who go about singing traditional songs that really move me" Dick Gaughan ...................................................................... Tickets for discount cardholders are£9; others £10, and can be ordered online.
