Subject: What Happened to...Emitt Rhodes?

One guilty pleasure of my youth was an album called "Emitt Rhodes" by Emitt Rhodes. It came out in the middle of the "Paul McCartney is Dead" business, and there were rumours that this was an album of Paul's. One reason is that several of the songs are utterly like early Paul M., which is pretty good! As a Beatle obsessive, I was already addicted to those production values -- he was the only copier I ever liked (until the Rutles).
I had a vinyl copy of the record which wore out, and never saw another. And never heard of him again.
Someone told me they ran across an announcement that this guy was about to release a new album after 30 years! Does anyone have any idea who he was, where he went, etc.?
yours, Peter T.

That's a name I didn't expect to hear of again!
I've got the album you mentioned. He played everything on it and did every vocal. That's the only one I ever heard though I know he recorded three others, "American Dream","Mirror" and "Farewell To Paradise".

Memory fizzle.....maybe But isn't Emitt Rhodes the guy who gave us "The Stick"????An electric guitar neck with out a body and made noises by touching the finger board.I'll propably wake up in the middle of the night and say, "OHhh shoot, that was Emitt "whatever". But that name is scanning my brain bank.

The guy who gave us the "Stick" was named Chapman.

Thanks Mike, the Emitt threw me, Chapman is the man, Emitt Chapman. Half right or half wrong is still as wrong as wrong can be. Thanks for the clarification.

After a recent recommendation from someone whose judgement I trust I recently bought this remastered package released about six months ago.

48 tracks recorded between 1969 and 1973 by which time Emitt was still only 23 years old. It's nice to discover such an astonishing musical talent nearly forty years later (and almost ten years after the last message in this thread!)

Thanks, I always wondered if anyone else would have remembered him! There was something fresh about his slavish copies!

Peter T.

I remember Emitt Rhodes very well, a very underrated talent as it turned out.
I would like (if you haven't listened to his music much) to recommend the artist who most reminds me of Emitt even after all these years... it is Michael Penn, just give his music a listen on Spotify, he is finding the success that Emitt Rhodes found so hard to hold on to all those years ago. If you loved Emitt Rhodes you will appreciate this man's ability too.
Happy 60th birthday Emitt for last month. I hope everyone enjoys Michael Penn.
Peace and blessings from Brynna, South Wales

What happened to Emitt Rhodes?

I believe he signed a contract that required him to produce about three of four times as many albums as he could deliver. He burned out and quit the music business.

Here's Emitt Rhodes on Richard Thompson's website. RT is playing on a few tracks on Emmit's upcoming record.

I see that Spotify (for those who can get it) has that compilation Twickfold mentioned. Pleasant listening. And that isn't a putdown.

I'm wondering how did the Fairports end up putting and Emitt Rhodes track on their first album?

"I'm wondering how did the Fairports end up putting and Emitt Rhodes track on their first album?"

One of the friends of the band who managed to get hold of a lot of American import albums must have brought round one of his albums and played it to us.. We liked the song and did our own version. And the rest, as they say, is history... he's a nice man is Mr Rhodes..
