Subject: Song lyrics challenge From: bermuda (inactive) Date: 25 Jun 99 - 02:26 PM Last night, when I was in that half state of falling asleep when this song came into my head from about fifteen years ago. I can't remember the artist or many of the lyrics but it's a great story. It's about this chicken hawk and buzzard that are sitting on the fence checking out some chickens. The chicken hawk wants to go get some chickens but the buzzard keeps telling him that the Lord will provide. Well, the chicken hawk can't stand it any more and he starts to go after the chickens. The farmer comes out of the farm house with a shotgun and kills the chicken. Then the buzzard says "I knew the Lord would provide". If anyone knows the song and/or artist I would appreciate a response. You guys have been great at responding before and I'm sure I'll hear from you again. Thanks bermuda

Subject: need lyrics from a Mike Cross Song From: bermuda Date: 26 Jul 99 - 09:25 PM Last month I got a sound clip for the song "The Lord'll Provide" by Mike Cross. As soon as I can read 'em I'll remember 'em. |

Subject: RE: need lyrics from a Mike Cross Song From: rich r Date: 26 Jul 99 - 11:24 PM I am guilty. I promised to transcribe and post the lyrics several weeks ago. In fact I thought I had them written down somewhere, and perhaps I do, but I ain't found 'em. Then I forgot to go listen to it and write them down again. I hearby promise to be a more responsible member of the Mudcat community before someone else notices that it was me who issued false promises and petitions to have my privileges cut off. Subject: Lyr Add: THE LORD'LL PROVIDE (Larry Reynolds) From: rich r Date: 27 Jul 99 - 12:22 AM THE LORD'LL PROVIDE (Larry Reynolds)
Big ol' buzzard sittin' on a fence
And the buzzard looks at him with a baleful eye,
The chicken hawk said, "But I'm hungry.
"No, the Lord'll provide, you know the Lord'll provide."
Chicken hawk starts to chase the chicken,
And the buzzard looks at him with a baleful eye,
"Yes, the Lord'll provide, children; you know the Lord'll provide." The song was written by Larry Reynolds who plays backup guitar and sings background vocals on the Mike Cross album, which probably explains why it is not at the Mike Cross site. Recorded by Mike Cross on "The Bounty Hunter". Rereleased on CD "The Best of The Funny Stuff, Creme De La Cross" rich r |
Subject: Lyr Add: ELMA TURL and SCOTSMAN (from Mike Cross) From: John Hardly Date: 12 Apr 05 - 10:21 AM Mike Cross also recorded... ELMA TURL (Mike Cross) Elma Turl is a beautiful girl, and I'd love to have her for my wife, She's just the kind of woman who could make me happy for the rest of my life My daddy said, "Son, there's something you don't know, and it's something I think you oughter Elma Turl is a beautiful girl; but son, she's my daughter." Alice Green is a beautiful thing, and I'd love to have her for my wife, She's just the kind of woman who could make me happy for the rest of my life My daddy said, "Son, there's something you don't know, and it's something I think you oughter Alice Green is a beautiful thing; but son, she's my daughter." Well, I've been all around the whole durn county, like a buck huntin' for a doe, But it seems every girl I'd like to marry is a wild oat Daddy sowed So I went to my mama with my head hung down, and she asked me what the matter could be, I told her my problem and she took my hand and said, "Son, now listen to me." "You see, your daddy was such a good-lookin' young man, and like an eager young stallion horse His blood ran hot, so you can't blame him for lettin' Mother Nature take her course But you got no reason to be upset; don't you worry, don't fret, don't bother You see, your daddy ain't your daddy, he only thinks he is; so you can marry whomever you wanter. Transcribed from "Mike Cross: The Best of the Funny Stuff - Crème de la Cross" (Copyright Vic Ray Publishing, ASCAP) and... THE SCOTSMAN (Benjamin Michael Cross) Well, a Scotsman clad in kilt left the bar one evening fair And one could tell by how he walked that he'd drunk more than his share He fumbled 'round until he could no longer keep his feet And he stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street Ring-ding-diddle-liddle-I-de-o, ring-di-diddley-I-o Oh, he stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street About that time two young and lovely girls just happened by One says to the other with a twinkle in her eye See yon sleeping Scotsman so strong and handsome built I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt... They crept up on that sleeping Scotsman quiet as could be Lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see And there behold for them to view beneath his Scottish skirt Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth... They marveled for a moment then one said we must be gone Let's leave a present for our friend before we move along As a gift they left a blue silk ribbon tied into a bow Around the bonnie star the Scots kilt did lift and show... Now the Scotsman woke to nature's call and stumbled towards the trees Behind the bush he lift his kilt and gawks at what he sees And in a startled voice he says to what's before his eyes Oh, lad I don't know where you've been but I see you won first prize... and... Directions Mike Cross Well, I was new in town, I'd just pulled in I was looking for the house of a dear old friend... and though I used to sing that one, I can't remember much of it |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lord'll Provide (from Mike Cross) From: JohnInKansas Date: 12 Apr 05 - 06:02 PM In live performances, Mike Cross frequently does some minor variations on his more popular tunes. In Elma Turl, the second verse often starts: "Alice Green is a pretty little thing, and I'd love to have her for my wife." Not much of a change, but it seems to me to "scan better," and avoids the identical repetition of the first bit from the first verse. And in the last line I've heard several times: "...your daddy ain't your daddy, 'though he thinks he is" Also minor, but easier for me to sing - probably because that's how I heard it first. Most of his songs appear on more than one of his CDs, and I haven't checked to see if this one varies on the ones we've got. I do recall that the lyric for "The Great Strip Poker Massacre" is slightly different on two of his recordings that we have. "Shadow on her eye" vs. "Fuzz on her thigh." Reminiscing: In August 1985 at the Philly Folk Festival, there had been a lot of rain, and Mike composed, extemporaneously and on the spot, his special tribute to the folk at Philly: "I Survived the Philly Flood of '85" In September 1985 at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield Kansas, there had been a lot of rain, and Mike composed, extemporaneoulsy and on the spot, just for us at WVA, his special tribute: "I Survived the Winfield Flood of 85." Dang, you gotta admire that versatility. (Just kiddin' Mike.) John |

Subject: RE: ADD: The Lord'll Provide (& Mike Cross songs) From: GUEST,Paul Date: 28 Oct 11 - 10:35 PM Anyone have the chords for lord'll provide. Subject: RE: ADD: The Lord'll Provide (& Mike Cross songs) From: GUEST,Larry Reynolds Date: 05 Nov 11 - 09:38 AM I wrote the song in G and that's where I still play it. There is a little pattern sort of like something Mississippi John Hurt might play where I use my pinky to catch the A above the high G of the G chord. Bass pattern is pretty standard Travis picking with thumb. Takes a little while to catch the syncopation. Will get something online at some point since I am now retired and have the time. Will post link when that happens. Thanks for the interest. Larry |
Subject: RE: ADD: The Lord'll Provide (& Mike Cross songs) From: GUEST,Clifford A. Smith Date: 30 Nov 12 - 09:21 PM About a year later... Larry Reynolds, thank you. I first heard this tune/song many years ago. Lately I have been learning John Hurt's style (so simple it plumb evades me). Your comment helps me a lot. I hope you had a chance to post a transcription - or publish a book of your music - since you last wrote. Cas |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE GREAT STRIP POKER MASSACRE (Reynolds) From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Nov 12 - 09:40 PM Here's another classic by Larry Reynolds, recorded by Mike Cross: THE GREAT STRIP POKER MASSACRE (Larry Reynolds) Aces and jokers and jacks of one eye The ante's a nickel and aces are high Poker by the light of a candle. If our parents found out there'd be a scandal. The tent flap flew open and to our surprise, there stood a vision of loveliness before our eyes. With paint on her toenails and dime store perfume, stand back boys, and give her some room. CHORUS Linda, the sweetheart of my junior high, with her hair up in curlers, and fuzz on her thighs. She said, "Good evenin', boys. I was just passin' by," Sweet Linda, won't you come inside. Well, being a covey of red-blooded beaus, we soon talked ol' Linda into playin' for clothes. But as the evening flew by in a whir, the only one left with clothes on was her. She said, "Looky here, fella's. Now ain't I your friend? I can't let you walk home with your buns in the wind. So to show you that I ain't a creep, I'm gonna sell ya your clothes back real cheap. It's a nickel a sock, and a dime for a shoe. Shirts are a dollar, and blue jeans are two. You can pay me at school when the mornin' bell sounds, if you don't want the news spread around. (Chorus) Now Linda's in Reno and blackjack's her game. She plays for the house, and she wins just the same. She's easy to find. All you look for, my friend, is a table of stark nekkid men. (Chorus) from Best of the Funny Stuff: Creme de la Cross, recorded by Mike Cross |
