Subject: Some of Janie's Music recordings
From: Janie
Date: 01 Dec 09 - 12:36 AM

Disclaimer. I am not a musician or performer - I just like to sing, mostly on my back porch late at night. Keep that in mind if you choose to listen. I understand it ain't great music, but after posting here for so many years, want to share this bit of me and finally have the confidence to do so.

The recordings are all quick and crude Garage Band recordings that I have uploaded to webfilehost.com. When you click on the links, look at the bottom of the sidebar on the right. There will be a message that says "please wait to download....and it will tick off about 50 seconds. Then a download button will appear.

Little Sally Walker Down in New Orleans
Based on the traditional song/childrens' rhyme, "Little Sally Walker," I wrote the lyrics for all but the first and last verse. The tune is from a fragment of a song I remember a friend singing and playing back in the mid 1960's based on, but different from the lyric versions of "Little Sally Walker" found in the DT. I have a tendency to mishear and misremember tunes so don't know if it is the same exact tune she sang or not. After doing some web research, I think the tune and last verse may be attributable to Jim Kweskin - a modification of a common "singsong" cadence and chant for many childrens' rhymes. There is more information about "Little Sally Walker" on another thread "Origins: Little Sally Walker."

Janie: Who says you are not a musician? Fantastic stuff! I was harmonizing.

You should try www.Box.net. They let you share files and the links stay forever.

I've shared a bunch of stuff there.

But having heard Janie sing at the Getaway, she is both a musician and a performer. I remember nights at Ramblewood with Janie, Annie and Dani harmonizing - beautiful stuff.

WOW! I am SO glad you shared these! Having recently spoken with you and hearing your voice for the first time, I knew it would be good, but these are really outstanding. I can just *see* you sitting up there on the porch in the Holler..singing easy and strong..even a tiny hint of a dog barking in the one. Field recording at its best, imo. Thanks, Janie!

Yeh, Kat, field recordings. That is a good characterization. Probably should have called them that in the thread title.

Glad you enjoyed them. For something really authentic, you ought to hear the ones with the train whistles or lawn mowers in the background:>)

I did not mean that in any negative fashion, btw.

I'd love to hear those ones, too, Janie. It doesn't get any better, imo. I wish I had a few more of the same from my folks. Some of our best musical archives are field recordings, imo. Yours will be as important, some day, as those we all go gaga over now...it is a tradition I feel strongly about and which should be continued. So there!*bg*

My favorite audiobooks are the ones where the reader's bird is chirping from a few rooms away. Makes them REAL.

As for YOU, Miss Janie, let me cradle you softly in my lap to say this soft, loving thing: "Hell's Bells, woman, what took you so long?!?!?!?"

Here is one more that I was having problems converting to an mp3 file last night.

(For Garage Band users who have perhaps had the same problem, a google search finally indicated that I needed to shorten the file name. Once I did that I had no problem with the conversion.)

See That My Grave Is Swept Clean (This is based on the Mavis Staples gospel version.)

Working right now for me, too. Love this addition..singing along.

I played Little Sally Walker earlier today when Morgan was here. He was in the other room when it finished. He hollered out at me, "Hey! Why'd ya turn the music off. I liked it!" When I explained it was just the one song, he asked me to play it again, then went prancing around in time with the music, catching about every third word...singing along. Great stuff, Janie!

Oh, and your wish is my command vis a vis the title.:-)

Scroll all the way down to the right hand side of the linked page. There will be a little bar which shows the download happening and will show text counting down the seconds to download, THEN it will give you a bar to click on to actually download it and play it.

It forces you to "wait 59 seconds before downloading" or some such number. Go look at another page for a bit and when you come back it will be ready to download. Then it will go as an MP3 to your default downloads directory and boot with iTunes.

No Genie, you do not have to register. I didn't even have to register to use it.

When you click the link and the page opens, scroll to the bottom and look at the right sidebar (more like the right half.) At the very bottom, on the right, there is a message that says something like "Please wait to download", and under that, in red lettering, it counts down from about 50. Then it will say "click here to download" or something like that. On my Mac, the little download window pops open, and once the file is downloaded, it starts to play.

You might want to just wait out that 50 second delay, though; if you go away for more than a couple of minutes, you may get "link expired" when you try to download.

Thanks Frogprince. I'm glad you liked "See That My Grave...," I do think of myself as a singer, but I also know that I am not a musician. Not referring to not playing an instrument anymore when I say that, just that my voice is better than my musicianship. Not trying for false modesty. I wouldn't have posted the links if I thought they were not worth sharing.

One and all, I do appreciate that you have taken the time to listen and to let me know you like it.

From: Janie

I'm sure this has been discussed on other threads, but I don't seem to be able to find the proper search terms to locate them.

Is there a file sharing site that people can easily navigate to which those of us on Mudcat who are not professional musicians can upload mp3 files simply for sharing with with Mudcatters, friends and/or family without worrying about copyright infringement?

webfilehost.com - the first place I uploaded files to, requires that I provide a link for people to access the mp3's I uploaded, which keeps it private and personal, and so I was not concerned about copyright infringement. I don't think it would be possible to do a google search and come across those files. Sharing them in that manner is on par with singing at song circle.

Because people were having difficulty understanding how to access the files, I ended up creating a Myspace page so that the few folks on Mudcat who were interested in listening could more easily access the mp3 files. However, I am increasingly uncomfortable with it. (Paranoid, actually.) Myspace is very clear that uploading songs to which one does not own the copyright is a clear violation of their policy. The one song I uploaded for which I did write the lyrics is not copyrighted, but it is possible the tune is copyrighted, and I don't think any of the other songs I have uploaded are in the public domain. I made a disclaimer that I am neither a perfomer or musician, and was simply uploading songs to share my own voice with Mudcatters. I also did not enable downloads. None-the-less, I am still in obvious violation of the policies of Myspace. Anyone searching Google or Myspace for a capella folk music could peruse the page, and the count on the number of profile views suggests that does occur.

I don't want to get sued.

Janie, I wonder if you could put it on youtube with a still photo? (I used MovieMaker and would be happy to help you with that.) There are people on there who sing and play other people's copyrighted music who are obviously not getting in trouble. They're doing their covers and I think that is allowable. I would guess youtube pays ASCAP, BMI and whomever like a radio station does, maybe?

Dadgum....another post lost in cyberspace.

I know, Effsee, and I'm sorry. Me an 'Sharon has got some stuff to work through to reconnect with the magic of those hallowed hills.

Thanks for your offer, Kat, but I don't think I am any more comfortable with Youtube than with Myspace, although for at least partially different reasons.

I wouldn't go on about this except I think there are probably many other people in this community who might value the opportunity to share whatever we have to share musically and to hear what other folks have to share, simply within the context of our community - a cyber living room or back porch, so to speak. (Or if you have ever had the opportunity to attend one of those most accepting, encouraging, and empowering of gatherings known as the Getaway) a cyber Getaway.

maeve, we are on the same wavelength. I don't think an actual site is necessary. There are a number of free filesharing sites whose servers could be used. All it would require is that folks who are interested take the little bit of additional time needed to learn how to access mp3 or .wav files the person who uploaded the file provides links to. The original site I used is not hard to access, but does take a few minutes of reading or perusing the site, initially, to figure out how to access the file.

So, am I the only rank amateur here not comfortable with the public and searchable nature of Youtube or Myspace, and also paranoid about copyright laws given the propensity of some folks in the music industry to go after little people "on principle?"

Or maybe I'm the only rank amateur brazen enough to want to share my voice and hear the music of other rank amateurs on Mudcat?

Understand - I have no song circles here, and no where else other than the Getaway to sing, share and listen to others in a very comfortable and accepting environment where the emphasis is on respecting the love of the music and not on performance ability.

Several years ago I facilitated a song circle for several months.   There is no tradition of song circles here. There are monthly jams at which instruments dominate.

I was hesitant to assert leadership or to shape the nature of the circle, mainly out of concern it would result in too few folks coming. Sometimes it was great, but often it was pretty unsatisfying-to everyone- because interests and expectations were too diverse - "group sing" with show tunes vs. song circle with folk music, a person I dearly love who sings light opera, who, when they came, wanted to play the piano for all of us to sing along with, and professional musicians showing up who basically treated the rest of us as an audience.

The reality is there are simply not enough people interested in a relaxed, take turns and joing in on the chorus - folk song circle that welcomes instruments but is not a jam.

So I am musically lonely.

Janie, I'm sure I'm not the only singer here who shares your need and vision. The How of it may take some figuring. Let's keep mulling it over here. I sing with a pretty good chorus and occasionally am fortunate enough to drive to South Portland for a song circle, but there is nothing like what I need around here right now. Perhaps we can figure it out together.

You are not the only one. I am musically lonely, too. We used to at least get together on PalTalk and hear each other that way. Before that we used HearMe. I'd love it if we could get a set day and time to do Paltalk once or twice a month, but there hasn't been a lot of consistent support for it in a long while. Sunday afternoon seemed an okay time for most folk. The disadvantage is it only happens at that time, so anyone who could not tune in would miss out. No files to share.

Kat,

When I first came to Mudcat, the Mudcat Paltalk was still going, but Paltalk was apparently having "technical issues." from what I remember from posts at the time. I was not able to get Paltalk to function on my computer. That may have been in part because it was a small and not very powerful computer, the fact that I was on dial-up at the time, or both. But as I recall, there were a lot of people not able to get in. Again, I'm going on distant memory of thread discussions, but my recollection is the paltalk room went away because of the number of folks having trouble with access.

Maybe those problems are resolved now? Some one, perhaps open mike, was or is still running a paltalk room, but it seems not to have taken off with Mudcatters. Again, there may be tech issues that are beyond those of us who are not very computer or IT savy. I don't think having a regularly scheduled time should be an issue. If one has access to 3-D song circles, those are regularly scheduled events that people commit to making once or twice a month.

Hey, if it was just the three of us, I'd be happy!

Me, too, Janie. I'll look into paltalk...it seemed kind of different to me last time I looked in and I'll ask open mike about it. At least I will try, not making any promises until the holidays are over and the meds kick in a little more.:-)

Dan, you are obviously a savy IT person. Read over the last few posts and see if you have any thoughts or ideas based on what folks such as maeve, Kat and I are wondering how to make happen.

Would probably be a good idea to start another thread with an appropriate title. One of us will get around to it, I hope. Maybe copy the last several pertinent posts to it for context. For now, I gotta go to bed.

Well, Paltalk would not work for me. According to what I just read, it does not offer a platform for Mac. Only for Windows. Both my laptop and my PC are relatively old slow, and I can't free up much memory on them.   I don't think they could effectively handle Paltalk.

Easy, I will set one up on my server that you can upload to and then catters can listen. I will restrict it to just those you want so you are not sharing with the world. I will also setup a built in player so you don't have to download the song to listen. Pretty easy for me to develop, have something to get done but I can do it in a couple of weeks. Been wanting to do that anyway for my stuff also
