Subject: RE: Happy Hannukah! From: Mr Happy Date: 14 Dec 09 - 09:10 AM Here's a song sung during Hannukah, maybe a kind of equivalent to Xmas songs of the secular kind Chanukah, Oh Chanukah Chanukkah, O Chanukkah A yontev a sheyner A lustiger a freylicher Nito noch azoyner Ale nacht in dreydl shpiln mir Zudigheyse latkes esn mir Geshvinder tsindt kinder Di dininke lichtelech on Zogt "al ha-nisim," loybt G-t far di nisim Un kumt gicher tantsn in kon (Translation) Chanukah, Oh Chanukah, come light the Menorah Let's have a party, we'll all dance the hora Gather round the table, we'll all have a treat Sivivon to play with, and latkes to eat. And while we are playing The candles are burning low One for each night, they shed a sweet light To remind us of days long ago. One for each night, they shed a sweet light To remind us of days long ago. |

Subject: RE: Happy Hannukah! From: GUEST,John from Kemsing Date: 14 Dec 09 - 09:30 AM Our friend in N.Y. tells us of her electric Menora which she keeps illuminated in her flat during the whole festivity. I had no idea of whatof she spoke, a beautiful, elaborate candelabra, until she explained. |
Subject: RE: Happy Hannukah! From: GUEST Date: 14 Dec 09 - 10:02 AM Whether it's Hannuka, Hannukah, Chanuka, Chanukah or Channukah, or whether it's menora or menorah it's all good. In America, Chanukah seems to have more importance than in other parts of the world, especially Israel, perhaps in part because of it's proximity to Christmas, and the gifting nature of that celebration. In Israel it is just a minor holiday, so I am told, with few, if any, gifts. Also, here we eat lots of potato pancakes (latkes), whereas the treat of choice in Israel is...the donut. Both are treats fried in oil which is the source of the Chanukah miracle. As one who does celebrate, I thank you all for your seasonal wishes; I'll be back at ya in about ten days. John |
Subject: RE: Happy Hannukah! From: SINSULL Date: 14 Dec 09 - 10:12 AM Channukah, Channukah Come light the mennorah. Happy faces all around We'll all dance the horah. Apologize for spelling errors. In NYC I used to celebrate Channukah with friends, Passover too. Wonderful times. |

Subject: RE: Happy Hannukah! From: Jim McLean Date: 14 Dec 09 - 01:25 PM My Yiddish is not too good but the English translation is rather loose and not exact in a few lines, even giving poetical license. Can anyone provide a literal translation? and I too add my best wishes. |

Subject: RE: Happy Hannukah! From: C. Ham Date: 16 Dec 09 - 11:02 AM Does anyone know how a menorah is passed down through the generations in a family? Is it handed down to the women of the family? The sons ?Is there a custom involved in who gets it? It really varies from family to family. Some families have their own traditions or customs about handing things down, some don't. |
