I just got a call from a student of mine who said that he had heard that she had had a stroke and now she is in the ICU. That's all I know right now.

What a profound letter, Kat. I didn't see it before, so thanks for bringing it back.
As we grow older we see friends fall by the wayside, we see the world change in ways that are nearly unfathomable, we watch our children become adults and take the world on their shoulders, and then have children of their own. It is all a nearly inexpressible joy, and an unfathomable sadness at the same time.
I wish Jean well in her journey, and hope she can come back and join us here again soon.

I read a Facebook post tonight by Cathy Fink that Jean Ritchie has suffered a stroke and is in the ICU. I have been unable to confirm this on Google or Google News, and nothing has come through yet on the Folk Alliance listserv. Anyone have further and updated details?

Kat, thank you so much for posting that link. I have saved Jean's message and will read it over and over again. How bravely she faces up to her fears.

I only ever met her once, in an informal evening at Roger Nicholson's (a lovely British dulcimer player) 's house. I had my harp with me, and we all sat around pickin' and singing' and just talking. And now he's gone from us, just a few weeks ago.

Jean remains a shining beacon of artistry and integrity and beauty, and she is in my thoughts.

It was this time last year that I wanted to get in touch with Roger Nicholson, whom I hadn't heard of for many years, and Jean took the trouble to help me (a complete stranger) contact him. Which I did, and received a very nice letter in January this year - he'd been in hospital with pneumonia and wrote, rather ruefully that he was still alive - just.

LeeJ, you summed it up beautifully. I am glad to have shared what I think is one of the most profound things ever posted to Mudcat.

I hope they are playing/singing music for her. It was a tape of Jean's sister, Edna, that got me through the first night after heart surgery. Her high, sweet, calm voice, just like Jean's, singing to me, calming me, giving me something to hang onto.

News update from a relative: Jean has been in intensive care the last few days. The stroke occurred a week ago Friday. Initially, she seemed to be pulling out of it, and the doctors were hopeful of applying medication to break up the clot. She also was able to speak a little bit. However her condition declined again with more bleeding on the brain... and consequently the medication cannot be administered. Her condition is very serious. Her husband George continues to be in fragile condition with dialysis three times a week.

Jean and her music have been inspirations to me since I first became aware of folk music back in the late 50's and early 60's. In 2006, I told of one way in which Jean's music influenced both my family and me. I don't know if Jean ever saw that 2006 message since I seem to have killed the thread with it, but the incident I related was one that I remember with special fondness and thankfulness for Jean's music.

Here's hoping we'll find you're actually quite healthy Jean, but, if not, I add my spiritual strength to all the others here wishing for a speedy recovery.

UPDATE

Hello all,

Thank you so very much for all of your concern, prayers and good wishes at this time. Dad has read all of your messages as well, and wanted me to tell you all how much he appreciates your concern as well.

We are going to see her in a little while. When I get home, I'll post an update. For now, we're not sure how much she will recover. She suffered a pontine stroke (in the pons area of the brain stem). Last week she was in a regular hospital room, and was spelling some words with an alphabet board. She was able to say a few simple things. She then took a turn for the worse and became less responsive. We just heard today that she was following requests to move her limbs, and that she opens her eyes and is able to follow with them, which is a big improvement over yesterday. We remain hopeful and optimistic.

Jean and family. When I first came to Mudcat I started a thread that in my ignorance I did not know had been discussed ad nauseum on the forum for years before my arrival. Even so, Jean took the time to post a very thoughtful and informative response. Since that time I have always thought how fortunate this community is to have people like Jean share their warmth, wisdom and gracious kindness. Truly inspirational people, Elders, of not just this on-line community. Jean doesn't post often, but anything she posts is well worth reading and pondering.

As wonderful and inspirational as you are to people who love traditional music, Jean, strip the music away, and what you have offered us here would still be priceless.

Jon, thank you so much for taking the time to update us, and George, thank you for taking the time to read of our good wishes and prayers for Jean, you and all of your family. UPDATE

Here is the promised update, but first: Dad, Peter and I are overwhelmed with the outpouring of good wishes from so many of you...even just in the time since I posted last. Old and new friends, and people who've been moved my mom's music, and by her personally. Thank you all again.

Dad printed out the "re-post" that katlaughing put up of mom's post about life, death, aging...etc. In our haste, we're not sure what the occassion of her writing it was, but we hadn't seen it. She certainly is eloquent, isn't she? Dad showed the printout to the nurse (one of the many outstanding and caring staff at St. Francis), and she was in tears. A friend of the family who is a doctor there posted a bio of mom in her chart. He wanted everyone working with her who only knew her under these circumstances to know how special a person she is.

Update: She opened her eyes when she heard dad's voice, and looked very definitely at both of us. People who know about such things will realize that this is very important. We asked her to move her feet, and she was able to do that. Also, a little later, I asked her if she was cold, and she shook her head for "no."

I told her about this thread, so she knows that the mudcatters are sending all forms of positive energy. I will continue to update here as we know more.

I first knowingly met Jean and George in the late 70's. We have run into each other and she has always been a classy lady.

Get well, Jean, it is too long since we have seen each other.

PS, Renal failure is not usually an acute disease. I have known kidney patients who have survived more than 40 years of haemodialysis by following a healthy regimen. At this point, there is growing demand for more treatment clinics because the mortality level of renal patients is approaching that of those with normal kidneys.

Several have commented on a post from katlaughing of a piece by Jean that included her feelings about passing on. . . . I have not been able to locate that post. Can someone help?

I met Jean (and Jon, Peter, George) my first year at Pinewoods Camp, 1965 -- 44 + years ago. Jon sang Lord Bateman that summer (I think Jon was 7). At the line about "Lord Bateman banged his fist on the table", Jon did exactly that, and then quite lost it and started laughing. Funny the things you remember.

The Pinewoods Folk Club has held an annual picnic at the home of Jean and George for many of the past 40 years, such gracious hosting, and such receptiveness to all the singers, the good, the bad, the. . . well you get it.

My dear friend and colleague, Jack Langstaff claimed to have influenced Country Dance and Song Society (then housed in New York) to present Jean in her first public concert (1949 I think) before she and George were married. I was privileged to work with Jean in a couple of the Christmas Revels productions. . . I think one in Cambridge and one in New York. It is a long time.

Jean never had a trace of condescension, though she knew very well what was routine stuff and what was real quality. She understood I think that the tradition goes on because of all of it, the good, the. . . . etc. It all feeds in, and no one can determine what the tradition will keep. . . None of us can really judge it (though we all do) as it is passing by.

I am sure I will always treasure most from Jean's recordings the two LPs of Ritchie Family Child Ballads from the 1950s (Folkways originally) . . . fabulous singing, fabulous material, . . . and yes, they are still available on CD, check with George and Jon. If you don't have these recordings, and you treasure the tradition, I think they are absolutely essential.

Clarice and I are sending all possible good thoughts and vibrations for a full and speedy recovery.

Here. We're back- son Jon from a two-week hospital stay,still having tests after getting home as they still can't find what the trouble is. George from another series of test, taking 18 different pills a day, soon to be told to start dialysis. Myself growling around the house with a hundred aches and pains. I can see and feel big changes coming, and know that this long Growing-Old part of our lives is coming to an end--- We ARE old! I start reading sympathetically about poor OLD people, and suddenly it hits me: What? I myself am 86. What do we do with our house? Man- all these taxes, who'll pay them next year? Will we go to a nursing home? Have a live-in nurse? I tell you, it's so hard when you finally realize that Life makes you keep on learning- right up to the end. I guess, as long as I can understand Life's messages, I'll be able to go on.

And I tell myself, "Just think of all the people that ever lived in this world. How many problems and worries and tragedies have they endured, along with the fewer joys and goodtimes and successes? And, when you come down to it, one is one and all alone and evermore shall be so. Or another way of putting it, You got to cross that lonesome valley by yourself.

I don't dread it, once I accept it. I have so loved my Mother and Father, all my gaggle of sisters, my three brothers (only one out of all of them is still in the world with me). We hurt with them if they have pain at the end, but we cannot go with them or ease that journey. Someone said, "The dead always look peaceful." I believe they are. I believe that they have walked the valley and found at last the destination we all are are striving to find. What else is Life, but a trip towards something higher and better? People who have almost died, have talked of being in a dark tunnel with a faint but bright light far ahead; then their passage is forbidden and they have to turn from the light and return to Life- to do an unfinished task there? To help or guide someone else for awhile longer?

I wonder- but it doesn't matter, does it? None of us can live forever. We must live Life to the fullest, then give those behind us a loving farewell. That's what I hope I can do.

I'll stop, because I don't know what I'm trying to say, but I thought it ought to be said. I guess I was trying to understand, myself, that not all of us CAN live to be old, or WANT to, and so arrive earlier at that entrance into the next world. In my personal prayers, I always say in my thoughts, "Lord, I'll stay as long as You need me, so show me what to do..."

Big Mick, feel better, and I hope that Fate, or Karma, or whatever, eases up on you. I know you'll be needed in this Life for a long time, so take the reins that have been handed to you, and have a good, long run. You have many who love you and are running along with you, and that lonesome valley is still far away.

Jean Ritchie has been a very inspirational person in my life.
I'm from West Virginia and I play the Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer.
I met Jean and her husband George in Santa Cruz when she was an artist in residence at UCSC. I had been to a few Pacific Rim Dulcimer Gatherings and gave her a redwood carving from one of the posters. I attended her workshops and concerts and learned to perform many of her songs on guitar and dulcimer. Her songwriting is just fantastic and says so much so simply and real. Thru the years I've been in touch with Jean and she would take the time to email and encourage me to play her songs Bluegrassy!
She is in my thoughts and prayers. She is my Dulcimer Queen.
She's our National Music Treasure.

I grew up with folk music. The first recordings I really remember were by Pete Seeger, the Weavers, and Burl Ives. When I was in high school near Washington DC, I listened to Dick Cerri's Music Americana, first on WAVA, then another station for a short time, then on WETA. During the year I was in 10th grade, we were having dinner with some friends one evening and my sisters and I went with their daughters to a neighbors home to folk dance. he had done folk dancing at MIT and she had taught in a Kentucky settlement school and had taken students to the Mountain Folk Festival at Berea College. Since that night, I've done many kinds of folk dancing for almost 45 years.

I first met Jean and her family the first time I attended the Christmas Country Dance School at Berea College at the end of 1970. For the next several years I enjoyed the special music from the Ritchie family. Jean's sister, Edna, and her husband came every year and one year another sister came from Colorado, with some of her family.

One year I took a group of kids to the Mountain Folk Festival, and we put on the mummers play that we used to do in Accokeek and other places that we danced. Ethel Capps, then the director of recreation extension and teacher of the Berea College Dancers, told me to bring that play to Christmas School in December. For each of the next three years I worked with a group each week to put on the play on New Year's Eve. Peter and Jon were two of my actors, and we had a lot of fun.

Probably the last time I heard Jean in person was at the memorial concert for Frank Warner that was held in New York City _many_ years ago. That evening was also the only time that I ever heard Pete Seeger live.

My heart goes out to Jean and her family, and I hope that she will recover and be able to sing again.

Jean has been on our mind a great deal this year. It was in our early Revels years that Jack Langstaff created an American version of The Christmas Revels just for Jean. She stayed at my home and was (and still is)so gracious. My mother, who was really not an arts person, attended Jean's performance and said afterwords "I don't know who that woman is, but she is really someone very special." Still true today. This year's Revels in Cambridge MA is still "Jean's show" in many ways, filled with beautiful music and story telling, and now so ably performed by tradition bearer Susannah Park.

The occasion of Jean's post (one of a couple she made in that thread) was in a thread about the troubles I have been going through with my daughter Ciara's accident, the loss of our beloved "chosen" family member Terra, my father's burst aneurysm, a stolen computer, and my beloved mother's stroke. Jean, through the magic of this wonderful place and several visits at her home, became a dear friend. But sometimes when one is a friend, we forget "who they are". Here is what I wrote about Jean's expression of caring support:


I read Jean's incredibly generous post last night and just sat there stunned and pondering the depth of this wise friend's gift. Her voice is a gift from the Almighty, for which she received without asking. She had nothing whatever to do with it's creation. But how she uses that same treasure is her gift to us. Here is a woman that is a national treasure. She could easily rest on her lifetime of accomplishment and receive the accolades she so richly deserves. And in the midst of her own trials, she takes time out to share her wisdom with a half hindended folksinger from Michigan and the rest of us. Not only did she share her wisdom, but she bared her soul. I am grateful beyond belief, and will treasure these words all the days of my life. As I am grateful for all the love and concern expressed by all of you.


I cannot help but be devastated when I think of this grand lady, and yes, my friend (how humbling to actually be able to write that)going through this. I cannot help but want to rush to George, Jon, and Peter's side to do whatever I can to console and aid them, as so many others, I am sure, want to. This wonderful, gifted, wise, and generous friend (to paraphrase another dear friend, Dan Schatz) deserves not to have to travel this trail. And like she told us, it is one she must travel. Sure, she is "Jean Ritchie, folk singer extraordinaire, Queen of the Mountain Dulcimer, Collector, Author, Songwriter".... and all the other superlatives she so richly deserves. But at this moment, for me, she is one of the finest people who ever showered friendship and love on me, and I ache at my powerlessness to do a thing but pray in the manner of my beliefs for her. And pray I shall.

Sweet friend, I don't know where this path will lead, but know that spirtually and with love, I (like so many others you have touched)am on it with you. Whatever the outcome of this, I hope that you understand and take with you, how very much so many of us love you.

And to the rest of you, it is in times like this that we are reminded of the importance, in fact the absolute miracle, of community. Max's wonderful creation has given us all the opportunity to help this beloved friend along to wherever this path leads. I know full well the value of all of you and your love, thoughts and prayers, and I give thanks for that every single day. You may not see me as often as you once did, as there is still so much going on in my life as I deal with the aftermath of all that has gone by. But you should know that your best wishes and constant "reaching out" to me have restored the music in my heart and soul and made it possible for me to play again. Jean needs that same miraculous love now, and I add my voice to the choir that is singing her along.

Aloha-this is Terry Duggins. Jean is in St Francis Hospital, Long Island. She suffreed a full on pondine stroke. That is the worst kind of stroke. That is at the stem of the brain where the memory for the major moter movements are. Like breathing swallowing and other vital organs. I have been in contact with them ever since her bieng hospitalized. She is still in ICU We can only hope for a full recovery. The last five years I spent alot of time with Jean and George in New York Hawaii and Kentucky.There just the most wonderful people ever. FAMILY IS MORE LIKE IT. My family always admired the Ritchie family for "Saving the Songs" as my family would put it. I just wanted you all to know. That the more of US that pray the better Jean will get.

My wife is a cognitive neuroscientist - not a doctor, but she does understand the brain and has done a lot of research with stroke victims. She says that the good news about this kind of stroke is that it doesn't effect higher or cognitive functions, memory, or the like. The bad news is that it can effect the basic functions Terry spoke about above.

I spent a year "sitting with" a person who had a similar stroke. He applied himself zealously to his rehab and regained so much physical function that most folks could not tell he'd had the stroke.

As it affected his cognitive memory and speech, some folks were really amazed at what I reported he was still able to access. I was not surprised. I simply took a relaxed view of anything that came out of his mouth; over time he relaxed more and more into that, and got quicker and quicker at making and articulating connections.

I mention this because it can be the same with motor function. The more relaxed the patient and family are about rehab and efforts to move, the more control will be exhibited the quicker. A lot of the info may still be stored in there somewhere, outside the affected area, tho brain mapping may not predict it.

This means that as soon as Jean shows any interest in the SOUND of music, her fingers may find themselves responding to her most-used instrument as long as her access to it is not "therapy" or with any expectations. "Would you like to lie next to your dulcimer" is likely to elicit a positive response, and the neural connections that remain may knit up a path for volitional finger movement.

Think of it as you would think of a quiet child curling up next to an injured adult. Just the presence of that child would tend to snake its way onto the injured person's psyche. Any connection that can be made via the Joy connection (in any of her five-plus senses) will elicit powerful connectors in the mind that can become visible over time.

Finally, as I believe Jean herself knows and believes, she is a spirit who happens to live in a body. Her spirit and mind are far more important and powerful than her ability to use her body. Anything that speaks Joy to her spirit will touch her mind, and her mind can cause the re-wiring of the physical brain. It just takes time and relaxed confidence on the part of close ones, and zero expectations.

This time is all about Playtime. The only "Work" time is time with and prescribed by physical therapists. The rest is All Play and THAT is where the miracles occur.

When I was working with Jean on the Utah Phillips tribute CD, she told me about the time she was playing Salt Lake and George had to have emergency surgery. Utah donated two pints of blood for the operation, and at the concert the following night, Jean said she wasn't sure what effect it would have on her husband to have two pints of Utah's blood coursing through his veins. Then she paused and said, "It was good though!"

On top of being wise, graceful, and talented, Jean is also a very funny person. I guess when you're the youngest of 14 growing up in Viper, Kentucky, grow up to be a New York City social worker who goes on to become "The Mother of American Folk Music," a great sense of humor is inevitable.

My wife is an avid dulcimer player and has some of Jeans books. Listening to my wife play and reading Jean's books ignited my interest in the dulcimer. As a result of reading her books I now build dulcimers and am slowly but surely learning to play.

Jean is so much more than a national US treasure, indeed to dulcimer players around the world she is a treasure and their inspiration.

My thoughts and prayers are with Jean and all her family.

All my good thoughts to you, Jean. My sister made me a "Jumping Jim" (same as a "Limber Jim") after we saw Jean demonstrate one at one of UC Berkeley's folk festival's in the early 60's. Jean has such a great way with kids! I don't know you personally, but what an impression you made on us kids!

I just heard about Jean's stroke. I want to send my prayers, love and healing thoughts to Jean, whom I have had the privilege to know since 1975 or 1976. Jean gave me the most exquisite comments about her music for Discovering Folk Music and every time I read it, I can just hear her voice saying it. George, Peter, Jon,

As I sit here in what was Vaughn's study, surrounded by her lifework as teacher, singer and folklorist (and my own in the next room), I keep thinking I should be able to tease out the brilliant thread that is Jean that is somehow a part of it. It's elusive.

We've none of us seen each other for years, and yet.... There are people in this life who just by doing what they do and being who they are give life more character, depth and pure decency, for all whom they touch. And the ripples from that spread, grow and live. Jean is such a person. And for all she has done - and all of you have done - I wonder if she'll ever know how many lives she's touched. The real ones don't, I think. And Jean's as real as they come.

This whole thread says that much better than I just did, of course. But I wanted to try.
It's a way of saying you're all very much in my heart and prayers. Because you are.

Jean Ritchie is a hero of mine. Not only is she a deep and intuitive folk singer, collector,
and representative of an authentic mountain tradition, she is one of the best songwriters
around. "Blackwaters" and "The L. and N. Don't Stop Here Anymore" are song masterpieces.

Christmas........Makes me think of Jean's fine Kentucky Christmas Old And New album (if you don't have it, you need it) and one wonderful song in particular. Back in 2001, Jean started a thread asking for the origins/history of a song named "The World Is Old Tonight."

Jean had recorded this of course and is the only artist to do so. When we do history/origin stuff the best source of info is often the artist that recorded it......but in this case it was the artist asking the question! I think it was the most fun I ever had on a song thread and it still ranks as one of the 'Cat's most unusual threads. There are these people I'm in awe of. I enter their presence with appropriate reverence. I dissemble and try to put on my 'Sunday best' self and behave like a worthy human, although I know I'm not worthy. Then, the object of my awe speaks to me, and within seconds, I'm talking and laughing with a delightfully down-to-earth person--a neighbor I met at the store or at a community supper. I no longer can even imagine anyone, even me, sticking them up on a pedestal, not because they don't deserve respect but because not accepting their warmth and humility would somehow be disrespectful.

That's Jean. We all know her because of the music, but I think Jean's biggest contribution is Jean. May all of our wishes and prayers help comfort and heal.

I just received a note from Jon. He says that Jean is aware, but still not able to communicate. They are waiting and hoping - as are all of us - waiting and hoping and loving.

I don't think an hour has gone by that I haven't thought of Jean since this started. Last night on the way home from a dinner, we listened to her Kentucky Christmas CD, and I was reminded again of Jean's talent as a songwriter (what a brilliant piece of work "Wintergrace" is) and as a conduit for American traditional music.

Thank you, Jean, for all you have given us - your music, your words, your traditions - and above all of that, you have given us your friendship, and that is the most touching gift of all. Our healing thoughts and prayers are all with you.

Jean Ritchie is a thread throughout my life-- my mother's days at Hindman before I was born set in motion all that music wrapped in Appalachia and the Ritchie family, when my brother worked at Pine Mountain teaching unemployed fathers to make traditional mountain dulcimers, Jean says, he brought the cows in with her many times, Jean's recording -- I do not remeber its name, I was 10 I am 72, but it was one of 3 records my family own (the the other two: John Jacob Niles and Alice in Wonderland!) Jean tried to teach me to play the Mountain Dulcimer at Pienewoods, camped to our family several times at Fox Hollow, was in revels my daughters and I were in the chorus for at Memorial Hall. Anytime she has given a concert in the Boston area, I have been there. Every Chrstmas we reread Singing Family of the Cumberland to remind us of what really matters most. Dan and I sung The One I Love at his brother's wedding. Black Waters, the most eloquent plea in poetry I know. My other 3 favorites: The Peace Song, Marne, The Bluebird Song. Our prayers are with the Pickow family and our thanksgiving is for Jean's marvelous joyous and sharing soul, my golden thread of song. Thank you, Jean.

I am so sad when I think that Jean may be slipping away from us. She was the most influential person in my musical life. When I was about 13, my sister Mary bought a mail order dulcimer through an advertisement in a Sing Out! magazine. It was made by George Pickow and the rest is history.
I have learned so much from her and in my work with Children's music I am constantly referring to her songs and sharing them with others.

She is in my thoughts and prayers. I will be dancing and singing in Berea next week at the Berea Christmas Country Dance School where many of her relatives and friends will be thinking of her too.

I want to share another Youtube video with you. It is the Ritchie Family Christmas Gathering as taped and narrated by Dave Garroway. For those of us raised in the 40's, 50's and 60's this will really resonate. I am not sure why, but I think it is because we were on the cusp between those earlier, simpler times and today's fast paced world. We remember the fulcrum point in the 60's. And often we yearn for the sights, smells, sounds, and good feelings of those simpler times. To see our beloved Jean as the beautiful young woman in these shots, to see her mother and sisters, well ... I can't speak for others but it makes me so thankful to know this wonderful woman. I am sad to hear that Jean is not as young as we used to be! Those were glorious days. I know that there are others who are making their mark today and that we can sit back and let them. Jean left her mark in so many ways and will continue to do so even if in different arenas. I recall her singing Black Waters and throwing her weight into the strip mine situation with a strong "RUN THEM ALL OUT!" And how she defused the explosive situation at the Lake Junaluska CSM Conference with her gentle but respected "presence."

Jean has been a kind friend since I met her and her family at Viper in 1955. An evening of hearing Balis and Abigail sing together with several of their children, thoughtfully assembled by Jean for our visit, has to be one of the most inspiring and memorable experiences of my life.

There must be very few people who can light up a room like Jean. Her extraordinary singing, her delightful presence, her humor (she can be ticklish funny)—and all those unexpected things, like borrowing my banjo and picking "Lord Bateman" on it with a sly grin—so many memories come flooding back.

Jean has filled my life and so many lives with beauty and enjoyment. She's showed countless of us the secret of what traditional music can mean, and its rootedness in a the life that went with it.

I second Gayle Rich's thoughts (from 15 Dec). We are deep into the 17-show run of the "American" Christmas Revels in Cambridge that is shot through with Jean's gentle spirit and energy, for it was she and Jack Langstaff who created this particular Revels in 1980. It was my great honor and pleasure to be her stage "husband" when we ran the show again in 1986. She declined to take part a third time in 2000, so Sheila Kay Adams filled her shoes that year. Now, with Suzannah Park in the Jean Ritchie role, we feel that we are continuing a great legacy. By the time we close, 18,000 audience members will have sung Jean's Peace Round together, in one of the sweetest and most memorable shows that Revels has ever created. Surely that is some testament to her enduring contributions. I will dedicate tonight's performance to her.

Yeah GSS.......I call it the Ritchie Family Voice as it came through them all with that same sound. Sandy Paton recorded Edna and her album is available on CD from Folk Legacy.

Her dulcimer work is different than Jean's in a way. She uses the dulcimer for embellishment and almost "punctuation" rather than accompaniment.

Spaw, that is the tape of Edna's which I played all night, in and out of the post-surgery fog, before I was aware of even surviving much. Her sweet, high voice was like a balm of calm love, just as Jean's is. Talk about blood harmony...there is a rare video of them both on youtube, which George taped in the 60s. They're singing Four Marys and it is difficult to tell their voices apart. What beautiful and enduring Beauty they have given us.

Little Robyn -- I'm pretty sure I took the lyrics from Jean's "Celebration of Life," but I've noticed "grow" used instead of "dwell" and "children of the earth" instead of "children of all men." Also, sometimes the round begins "O, what a..." and sometimes cuts straight to "What A..." I haven't seen or heard Jean comment on the variations, but I do think it would be great if some sang "grow" and some sang "dwell..." Let the folk process have its way on New Year's Eve == Mark

Found this bit of news:

Legendary Folk Singer Jean Ritchie is in a New York hospital after suffering a major stroke earlier this month.

Ritchie is a Perry County native and has been called the mother of folk and a national treasure.

She recently turned 87 years old.

Long-time friend Mike Mullins with the Hindman Settlement School says Ritchie had a stroke on December 4th and possibly another one after that.

She's been unable to talk but can respond to commands.

The family says she may be moved to a nursing home once she's stable enough to leave the hospital.

FYI

"Nursing home" is a generic term that can range from full-on rehab to any level of care. When someone is discharged to a care facility, it just means that a patient's situation is no longer considered acute and that longer-term strategies are being implemented in a less expensive facility with different staffing that suits the situation better.

In other words, it's usually good news to be discharged in that direction.

When my own mother had a serious stroke, she was able to make pretty amazing improvements over a period of 18 months in the nursing home where she received excellent rehab/physical therapy. Recovery from serious stroke usually takes a long time, but it deeply impressed me how much my mother improved each month.

I would like to point out to Jean's fans who are players of the mountain dulcimer that over on our online community 'Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer', we have started a little group called Fans of Jean Ritchie. It's a place where we've lately been discussing how Jean has touched our lives in various ways, and sharing our individual thoughts about Jean's wonderful accomplishments, performances, writings, and learning materials.

I hope Jon knows that this thread is checked (and thoughts of Jean and all her loves are strong) MANY more times than the number of posts here would suggest. On a number of such threads, that's been the case as soon as anyone asked if people were still praying/etc. when there were fewer posts.

Mudcatters tend to be in things for the LONG haul, whether we get updates or not. :~)

I don't know why it didn't come to mind befor, but Strumla's post reminds me of Taffy Thomas. He's a British performer who cam to the National Storytelling Festival a few years back. I saw his performance of Take Thse Chains From My Heart, and *that's* how I learned he'd recovered from a stroke. His recovery was that complete. I recommend the cd to anyone who can get it. As a tiny tot I went to sleep every night listening to Jean and Oscar Brand's records.
When I grew up, I had the great pleasure of meeting Jean back in 1989 and spending time recording her stories and songs on her porch in Viper. I have a lovely interview I did with her, which became part of the "Southern Songbirds" radio series about the women of Appalachian music. I feel it captures what a wise and humorous person she is, was.

I have stickers now that I am giving to people that has LLKM on it. The whole reasoning is not a promotional thing for me it is to make people remember the musical heritage of my area and state. I am really proud of my culture and heritage. Jean is a big part of Kentucky and her work has helped preserve our culture and heritage. LLKM and long live Kytrad. The Peace Round sounds like that positive note. I'm just glad to have had even the slightest connection to this lady. She once was kind enough to sign an old book I'd Mud-auctioned, in which she had appeared, for the auction recipient.

I don't ask for more. Wherever she may be, in whatever condition, that lives for me so powerfully that she will ALWAYS be with me.

Jean is one of the most significant and important balladeers of our generation. It may be that she is one of the remaining links to a genuine American folk tradition. I love the song
"The L and N Don't Stop Here Anymore". I've been working on it.

Jean has proven that a trad folk singer can be really knowledgeable about her role in the music. She has studied not only as a performer but as a scholar in the field.

We did it! We sang the Peace Round just after midnight NZ time!
It's now heading for half past two in the morning and we've just arrived home again. The Aussies on the eastern coast should have sung it about half an hour ago. It's on its way around the world!

I noticed Jean's words were slightly different than what I found in this thread, though I didn't make a thorough search. She sings "What a goodly thing / If the children of all men / Could live together / In peace."

(In this instance, I prefer the "children of the Earth" no offence to Jean.)

So there I was at the Nelson contra dance, having a great time, dancers whirling, taking my turn at the piano, and thinking "This is not the place to interrupt the action with a song. I'll do it when I get home." The dance ended, and the caller came up to me and said, "Allison, would you lead us in a song?"


....Why, yes, I would be delighted to! Nelson rang out with Jean's Peace Round and there were tears, I saw them. I felt chills, and such a connection with Jean and with all of you.

Love Animaterra's story, and I am sure there were may other Catters who had a similar experience, all around the globe.

We did our own New Year's for Jean and, while I am not under the illusion that it may have helped her directly, I know it helped me, and I suspect it would help Jon to know we all did as requested. Just as I know that fulfilling the original "Peace Round" request will have had much the same result, which I think Jean would like.

Many in various dulcimer clubs and folk music groups within Kentucky joined together at midnight to sing for Jean. Some of us were alone, some in small groups, others at New Year gatherings.....but we were all joined by this common bond - the love and admiration for Jean Ritchie.
I know she felt it some way, just as we felt the energy from each other.

Like many people I have been following this tread and sending good thoughts to all those concerned, but one of life's coincidences brought Jean even closer to my mind today.

I was doing some post Christmas tidying up and decided to go through my collection of old 78 rpm records. Imagine my surprise when I unearthed an "His Master's Voice" recording of Jean singing "Black-eyed Susan", "Going to Boston" and "Loving Hannah". The record states that it was recorded under the auspices of the English Folk Dance and Song Society. What made the coincidence was that the postman had just delivered my copy of Jean's Kentucky Christmas. There was a bonus tape in the package (thanks!) and on the tape was...."Going to Boston".

Sort of full circle really!

I've been keeping a computer sabbath of a sort the past couple of weeks, so I missed the "breaking news" portion of this thread...and yet, I didn't. I somehow settled on the Revels "Wassail, Wassail" recording as my favourite seasonal music during Advent this year. Jean's singing and her wonderful story of a blizzard-foraged Christmas tree brought nourishment to my hungry soul amidst the season's flimsier, falser commercial trappings.

My mother wrote from across the country, telling me she was in need of Christmas cheer...so I ordered a copy of the CD and sent it to her. In our two distant habitations, we both wrapped ourselves in Jean Ritchie's bardic gifts--as inspiring as a star in the winter sky, as comforting as a grandmother's quilt.

UPDATE

Greetings:

This came from Jon Pickow last night (January 2). He siad it was OK for me to put this onto Mudcat.

I've heard that people around the world sang it [Jean's "Peace Round"] as well. Then Pickows and the Brands sang it here, and with mom the next day.

I spoke to Jerry [Epstein] in the hospital the other day, and by the time I heard about the setback, the crisis had passed, thank God. It was good to hear his voice and know that he's not taking this laying down.

Mom is in a nursing home now. She is still on the ventilator, but she is somewhat responsive.

there was a long article in Sat Irish Times about a young woman who had a brain stem stroke. She has not had a great recovery - fully aware but paralysed, can communicate with eyes and finger - uses a machine something like the one scientist Stephen Hawkings writes with. The heartening thing is that ways have been found to aid communication and that she says life is worth living

We just had an update a couple of days ago. I know that everyone here (me included) really wants to know what's going on with Jean, but I think we need to respect her and George and the rest of their family's privacy, and be patient -- I am sure that Jon will post news (or someone will post for him) when he can. Yes, it is a lot. You may take that from me, as I have both parents in need of care just now. I check on this thread daily, and I am so full of empathy for what Jon and the family are going through. I can tell them this. Just keep one foot going in front of the other, no matter how insurmountable it looks. Never lose faith that it will get better. It will. And when you have a family that is built on love, as the Ritchie-Pickow family is, and friends that care as much as we care about you, it will lend you strength when the night seems like it will never end.

Singing 'with' Kytrad (Jean Ritchie in nursing home)


I'm taking the liberty of starting a new thread for the telling (and well-wishing) of Jean's stay in a nursing home. I do this because:

1. I spend enough time in those places to know how music can and sometimes does fill them to overflowing;
2. I have some idea how busy the Pickows and other family/friends are at this time;
3. I want to honor the Pickows' request to sing in the New Year for (with) Jean;
4. I suspect Jean is having a similar effect in the nursing home that she has had everywhere else she has been, whether she's mostly sleeping, or up and about busy with rehab! :~)


So-- Mudcatters, what song do you wish you could sing in Jean's room (or nearby)? Singing 'with' Kytrad (Jean Ritchie in nursing home)


Pickow's and friends-in-person who visit Jean, what can you tell us of Jean's stay? Does the staff have any idea "Who" they are hosting, and how are they treating y'all? I'm sure there have been many personal moments with one another you will not wish to share here, but please know that Mudcatters (posting or not) continue to think about and pray for you all, with warm gratitude for Jean's presence in our midst. Read the last line -
"In 1946, she graduated from the University of Kentucky with a B.A. in social work, and later took a job at the Henry Street Settlement in Manhattan. While in New York, Ritchie met other important musicians and became at home singing her mountain songs on the same bill as Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and The Weavers.

Since then, Ritchie has performed her family�s songs from the smoky coffeehouses of Greenwich Village to the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, England, and back home to the forks of Troublesome Creek at Hindman Settlement School in Knott County. And if the 85-year-old has her way, she'll be singing them for many more years to come.

"It keeps you alive longer," she says, sitting at her dining room table at home in Port Washington, New York. (She also maintains a home in Perry County, Kentucky.) "It wouldn't be much fun sitting in a nursing home, just waiting. If you want to stay longer in this world, you have to join in."


I hope Jean's head is full of music and her days in the nursing home pass quickly.

I've never met Jean but a few years ago, there was a thread regarding "The L & N" and I commented that I'd always thought it traditional and couldn't praise it more highly than that.
Jean replied and we shared a few PMs.
I was amazed that such a respected luminary would even take notice of anything I'd said. but I've realised that this sort of little incident is why she is so respected.

It isn't her music, which is superb, nor her tradition-bearing status, which is impeccable; but it's because of her humility and humanity and decency, all of which are what make her so important as a mentor and role model for us all.

Well at least we know that Jean is out of immediate danger and is in recovery and rehabilitation, which is usually a long slow process after a major stroke event. My own mother (born the same year as Jean, and also a musician) had a massive stroke which taught me a little about post-stroke recovery.
Depending on the severity of the stroke, recovery involves varying degrees of having to retrain the muscles needed for talking, eating, walking, etc. It's hard slow work, but amazing improvements are often made over time. Jean and her family are strong positive people, and I'm sure they are all up to the job.

Second that, Lisa. I am currently dealing with both a mother and a father in long term care and rehab. My Mom suffered a stroke. It is a process of creating new neural pathways and in 80+ year old folks who are a bit set in there ways, that can be difficult. But Jean, like my Mom, is a person determined to live a graceful, and interesting, life. She will deal with it in the same way she has lived her life so far, and that is why she is revered as a great folk artist, respected as a wonderful human being, and loved as a good friend. Prayers and love to the Ritchie-Pickow family.

Foggers you are rightI think it really stands as a testament to her character. Also sometimes an artists harshest criticsand critisicm comes from the people and area that they are credited with representing. For Mrs. Richey to be so loved by the people she represents is not a compliment to be taken lightley either. This was posted yesterday to a folklore list I'm on:

Hi everyone. I've been in touch with Jean Ritchie's family over the past several weeks and just want to give you a brief update. She suffered a stroke as you know and was hospitalized for a week. She was then transferred to a rehab facility here on Long Island and has made significant progress. Although she needs a respirator at night, during the day she is breathing on her own and able to move and speak. However she has limited language skills but is making progress. The doctors expect she will be able to go home in about 2 months.
