Here are some pages that have photos taken last Saturday in Virginia City, right before my performance at the Victorian Ball. I am still trying to get the sound files to work right.
This page leads you to another page with more photos. (My son took the pictures... pretty good for a kid with a little instamatic.)
Alice's Victorian Performance

The link wouldn't work, Alice. But I love the picture on the steps. Tell us what you sang?

Well, it's all on the linked page that wouldn't work for you!! I know what's wrong, I first loaded a page that linked to a page I changed the file name to. Hit reload on the stair picture page, then see if the link below it works.

errr There was also some additional information available about the error: [Tue Jul 27 23:41:54 1999] access to /home/u02/./acflynn/public_html/program.html failed for swnasa-44.ionet.net, reason: File does not exist

heck, never mind that reloading, I should have just given you both links:
A Program Of Songs and three more photos. Since they were aiming at anywhere from 1860 to 1900, I didn't get too picky about the dates of the songs.

Can you reload the first page and try it again? Let me know if it works or not, please.

Yikes!! I just found what was happening. The scan of the Dance program with the tassle is linked to the second page, but the words "ENTER HERE" are still linked to program.html, which doesn't exist. On my way to fix it.

thanks for the compliments. If you remember, they were looking for a 'stage title' for me for the advertising and the introduction, and at one point it was going to be 'The Emerald Belle'. It finally was decided to use 'the Irish Colleen'. This was fun. I was asked to sing at the much larger Victorian Ball in Hardin next year. Hardin is near the Little Big Horn Battlefield, site of Custer's last stand. They do a very large re-enactment of the battle every year. I didn't know they had a Victorian Ball, too, but the dance teacher and organizer for the Hardin Victorian Ball was in Virginia City, and she asked me to sing for her event next June. photo of Custer battlefield This is the first time I'd done a performance like this, and it was a blast. I can see that singing at historic re-enactments could become addictive. I know alot of you Mudcats do this. I think what I liked about this one was that it didn't take itself 'too seriously' in trying to be completely obsessed with every detail being historically accurate. It was fun.

Omigosh, Alice!!!

I've been a vintage ballroom dancer for years. I regularly go to Victorian, Guilded Age and Ragtime formal events. In fact, the picture of me in the Mudcat is from a Ragtime ball we had in New York City at a grand, lavish, turn-of-the-century restaurant, complete with vaulted ceilings and bronze statues, where we all dressed, dined and danced as if we were Vanderbilts in 1910. Even the musicians were in period dress.

Where do you go to events?

Hi, Alice.....

What a fun that must have been! Wish I could have been there. Waiting anxiously for some sound samples.

If you haven't found them already, look up Joan Morris and William Bolcom and their "After the Ball" album of turn-of-the-century dance hall tunes. Two of the songs from your program are on that CD. I'm guessing your style might be like hers, in which case - well, still waiting anxiously for some sound samples.

Well, Matthew, the only other dance that required costumes of the times that I have been to was a Big Band 40's dance. Not too many opportunities for Victorian dances here, out in rural Rocky Mountains, but I am looking forward to the Military Ball next June in Hardin. I want to dance the 'Dashing White Sergeant' dance again (and sing, of course).June 24 Billings Gazette article

Oops, I guess I messed up on the references - mixed this up with another album. Nonetheless, You'd love Joan's stuff. Check out the sound sample at:

Thanks, Tiger. I had found her album at CD now. She sings in more of the operatic style than I do, but it sounds authentic to what those early recordings of stage sopranos were like. I have that range, but I sing somewhere between the classical and folk... I HAVE to get these RealProducer files to Upload! It's the only way to explain, by hearing it. aaargggh. I've crashed my computer numerous times today trying to get it to work. Struggling with a lack of memory (doh) here.

Alice....

I can assure you that Joan and Bill are serious musicologists and that their performances are done in authentic style. They're both on the faculty at UMich or UMinn, I'm don't remember which. We're hoping to see them in a week or so and continue an admiration that has lasted for 25 years. Try another sample at:

Hey, gorgeous! I bet you sounded even better than you looked, which was pretty darned cool. (I want a pair of gloves like that. Were they sheer, or was it just a sheen from shiny fabric? Tres chic. And, of course, as you told Matthew, we don't get a HUGE number of opportunities up here in the boonies to wear fancy duds, but, a gal needs those elbow high gloves.)

Look forward to hearing you sing.

WW

Tiger, yes, I agree that Joan Morris and William Bolcom are wonderful. Wish I could hear it with you.

WW(KC) The gloves were mesh black gloves from a costume store, the dress has been in my family since long before me, the necklace is also very old jewelry from my family, and the high black shoes were $2.50 from the thrift store.

Almost giving up on getting a sound file uploaded. I've spent alot of time today dealing with the way it makes my computer crash. (Wearing out Norton Utilities.)

sheeesh, now after all this buildup, I'm going to feel completely inadequate about how they sound (if you ever hear them). The little taperecorder was sitting next to the kitchen door of the dining room, and there is alot of clanking of dishes and silver over the music.

Oh, you had better let this thread die on the vine! The anticipation of hearing me will make the sound seem anticlimactic if I ever get it posted!!!!

OK, I think I have succeeded in attaching one of the Real Audio files of one verse of The Foggy Dew from this performance. If any of you are REALLY curious, *grin* then I can email the file to you. Let me know here: acflynn@mcn.net
