Now I've got words to Yerakina and To Kokkoraki, thanks to Joe O & Yiorgos P. Has anyone the words (Greek alphabet or transliterated)to Varka Yialo (the boat on the shore) recorded by Tsitsanis & others and a favourite with my Kalymniot friends?

Hi, Roger -
Is this (click) the song? I'm guessing the Greek title is "Βάρκα γιαλό."

this page (click) has lyrics and a MIDI, but I don't know how to transliterate the lyrics.

Ah, here's a transliteration:

Ematha kira pos ehis varka yialo
ematha kira pos ehis psaropoula ke psarevis
o trialarilaro varka yialo

Kita na sou ti girepso varka yialo
kita na sou ti girepso ah gia na pao na psarepso
o trialarilaro varka yialo

Tha sou ti gemiso psaria varka yialo
tha sou ti gemiso psaria astakous ke kalamaria
o trialarilaro varka yialo

Eho varka gia sergiani varka yialo

Thanks, Joe, you're a star.
The recording I have by Stratos & Tsitsanis has one verse different, as does the first set of lyrics you post. When I've heard it sung in the taverna, various members of the party chip in with their own verses, so I'll try to learn these and perhaps have confidence to interject one next time (probably in 2011!). My attempt at Greek gets amused tolerance (rather like my singing!).

Interestingly, the Donald Swann version of Kokkoraki varies as well, understandable as a "Old McDonald" type song.

The insert notes give a brief synopsis of each song ( it's a 4-CD rebetika set). For Varka Yialo it says: I've heard my lady that you've got a boat on the beach- I'll come and ask for it so that I can go and fish. I've heard my lady that you've got a boat and you go fishing, a boat down on the beach.

I suspect there's a double entendre in there!
