I am given to understand that the First world Air Bodrhan Championship is to be held at Blitherscrum Folk Festival this year.
Any ideas when the tickets will be available?

It deserves to be held in a place with the unfortunate name of "Blitherscrum"

Blitherscrum ?

Further investigation reveals that the Blitherscrum organising committee came up with the idea of an "Air Bodhran Competition" (the correct spelling of this Celtic drum by the way) following the collapse of their "Giraffe Impersonation Competition". This had been won five years running by Reg Fiaf and nobody else thought they had a chance so they didn't enter and the competition lapsed.

The Blitherscrum organising committee were greatly influenced by the great Reg Hall who has written that "The only place that the bodhran should be heard is being played by The Wren Boys on St. Stephen's Day..... and then not every year."

Following Reg's advice the committee has decided that the Air Bodhran Competition should be held every time February 29th falls on a Saturday.

We used to enjoy the GIC.The highlight for me was the delightful scarf and
Muffler exhibit in the auxiliary beer tent.
Some must have taken years to create.

Seriously - as a lover of Irish music living in a place where they have the best of it wall-to-wall, you have my full support.
Air bodhranning means we don't have to bother with our annual cull.

Fail to see the connection between air bodhran and your penchant for destroying books.

I understand that the new Olympic sport of clay bodhran shooting will take place in Northern Ireland as part of the 2012 Olympics.

An up-date on that. Clay bodhrans are very expensive to make and just shoot - so people are allowed to practise on real ones. And using a machine gun is not regarded as cheating.

Hmm there is a sub section to the contest where they have a bodhran on a stick.(pause for that to sink in....)
Also a new craze for playing Air Bodhran whilst lamenting the death of the folk club.
Hot air bodhraning. LOL

At Blitherscrum last year I particularly enjoyed the Frizbodranning competition.. those things fly through the air with a precision unmatched in a Folk Club!!!! I actually won first prize which was an air bodhran!....... With the 2010 festival fast approaching I guess the directors and committee will be meeting to make the usual arrangements..... Hope they get 'Jezlo' and 'Vinegar Butt' again this year.......

There seems to be some predjudice against Air Bodhrans, There I've said it.
I know its consider impolite to mention the helipants int the room.
Do you think it is the "real" bodhran players who are displaying such ignorance of this traditional instrument.

I must admit I haven't seen many around at festivals lately. Is it a dying art?
(Mind you I suppose it must be if the rules of clay bodhranning as outlined above are anything to go by).

I thought they were all in the front row of the audience at the Danny Kyle awards competition at Celtic Connections in Glasgow last week, trying to outplay the poor chap on stage! Bit of a riddle innit? (or that's what a bodhran turns into if you machine-gun it!)
