Not sure of the name of this one - I hope Killybegs is enough to identify it - I heard it on a cd of the Cheiftans recently.

Any help appreciated.

The song that I am familiar with is called Boys From Killbeggs, and presumably sung by the Clancy Bros, because it was written by Tommy Makem. It has been published in an Irish collection called "wind That Shakes The Barley" which I will send when I can find it. It is a song about fishermen - does this sound familiar.

John - it may well be the same song - I won't know until I try it to the tune I have in my head.

Thankyou for your help and I'll look forward to trying it.

Hi Toni!

I just have the words to a song called "the boys of Killibegs"
(the beginning of the chorus is "with a pleasant rolling sea and the hearing running free....".
Tell me if this is the song you are searching for, so i will write the whole lyrics down. Hear from you, Daniel

A song, "Killibegs" is contained in the Chieftains album "Another Country" available on CD and cassette. I tried to copy the words for you but my cassette gave out after the third re-wind. If it's the same, it is a catchy tune.

From: John in Brisbane

It may have taken two and a half years, but here's the tune. Please note that in the key of G the F# in the verse is flattened to F natural to give the modal sound, but is played as F# in the chorus. I know that the lyrics have been posted in another thread but I could not locate them. Regards, John.

Subject: Lyr Add: KILLYBEGS (Chieftains)
From: Big Mick
Date: 04 Oct 99 - 01:46 AM

Here you go. I am reposting the lyrics.

All the best,

Mick

KILLYBEGS

My heart was warm with family love, as I slipped into a chair,
Beside my Uncle Sean, my daughters cross the table there.
I walked the docks in misty rain, a pain was in my legs.
For I've seen the dreams of kinsmen in the boats of Killybegs

The banter of my Uncle and my daughters filled the air,
And the Donegalers next to us were glad that we were there.
I was kind of quiet, listening at the window ledge,
To the music of the harbor, and the birds of Killybegs.

Down the coast not far is Galway and the joys of Connemara
After supper and some sleepin', we'll be goin' there tomorrow
I worried if my words would ere be sung by Irish men
Or rot here on the docks, like the fish of Killybegs

SHORT BREAKDOWN

A radio was playin' though we never heard a word
And the rhythm of the music was familiar if absurd
Hey, harkening intensity, for silence did I beg
For what a song was playing in the air of Killybegs

I couldn't quite believe it for it sounded rather strange
The instruments were different and the key it had been changed
I reached to turn the volume up and teetered on my legs,
A girl from Tipperary sang my song of Killybegs.

Sorry Mick - different song. The tune I posted is The Boys From Killbegs. Chorus is (roughly) With a pleasant rolling sea and the herring running free, the boats all riding gently through the foam, When the boats are laden down there'll be singing in the town, When the BOys From Killybegs come rolling home. Regards, John.

Subject: Lyr Add: BOYS OF KILLYBEGS (Tommy Makem)
From: JoeTully@bigfoot.com
Date: 05 Oct 99 - 01:22 PM

This is probably what you're seeking.

BOYS OF KILLYBEGS
by Tommy Makem

There are wild and rocky hills on the coast of Donegal.
And the fishermen are hearty, brave and free,
And the big Atlantic swell is a thing they know right well,
As they fight to take a living from the sea.

Chorus

With a pleasant, rolling sea and the herring running free,
And the fleet all riding gently through the foam,
When the boats are loaded down there'll be singing in the town,
When the boys of Killybegs come rolling home.

Well you've donned your rubber boots and you've got your oil-skins on,
And you check your gear to see that it's okay,
And your jumper keeps you warm for it's cold before the dawn,
And you're ready to begin another day.

Chorus

Now you're headed out to sea and the wind is running free,
And you cast your nets as rain begins to fall,
But the sun comes riding high and the clouds will soon go by,
And today you'll maybe take a bumper haul.

Chorus

When the weather's blowing rough and the work gets very tough,
And the ropes will raise the welts upon your hands,
But you'll never leave the sea for whoever you may be,
When it's in your blood it's hard to live on land.

Chorus

Well there's purple on the hills and there's green down by the shore,
And the sun has spilled his gold upon the sea,
And there's silver down below where the herring fishes go,
When we catch them there'll be gold for you and me.

Chorus

All the best
Tully
