Subject: RE: Review: Current Folk Clubs in Greater Manchester From: SteveMansfield Date: 02 Mar 10 - 06:08 AM Well you're both right in a way - the Greater Manchester Council was abolished by Margaret bloody Thatcher in 1986 and many powers returned to the 10 individual local and city councils: but many of the administrative and planning functions (transport, employee pensions, etc.) are still coordinated through AGMA, the Association of Greater Manchester authorities, and 'Greater Manchester' is still, I believe, a recognised geographical region. Sid, however, is probably still fully adjusting to Lancashire's territorial losses in the Wars of the Roses :) Good list Les, it deserves a permanent home on a website somewhere. It also overlaps nicely with Pete Hood's directory of events in Manchester and Cheshire at http://www.zen37219.zen.co.uk/folkystuff.htm. |

Subject: RE: Review: Current Folk Clubs in Greater Manchester From: Les in Chorlton Date: 03 Mar 10 - 03:14 AM I do indeed Bob, clearly unable to spell I have mangled his name into another. He came to The Beech with his daughter Liz when she danced Lancashire clog dances to celebrate the first year of our tunes session and sang a number of excellent songs and much fun was had. I understand from The History of The Cross Keys Uppermill that Buckley's Kitchen is at The Cross Keys L in C Any other mystery folk clubs? |

On a more serious note, Les - if you want a hand getting all that useful stuff into a web site, give us a PM. |

Subject: RE: Review: Current Folk Clubs in Greater Manchester From: GUEST Date: 09 Mar 10 - 01:51 AM We called in an interesting bar on Friday evening - Cheers in Crumpsall, next to Heaton Park. They have live music every Friday and Saturday, and quite often it has folk content e.g. this coming Friday it's a folk rock band (John Bilek) as it's coming up to St Pat's Night; then at the end of April Dom Collins is appearing there. There are othere "folkies" in between but I can't remember who they are, sorry! Ali |

Subject: RE: Review: Current Folk Clubs in Greater Manchester From: Les in Chorlton Date: 10 Mar 10 - 02:53 PM Ok the map doesn't show anything so that is a really sh*t load of help. If you put The Crown Inn Worthington into google map it works Les - going for a lie down |

Subject: RE: Review: Current Folk Clubs in Greater Manchester From: Will Fly Date: 10 Mar 10 - 03:00 PM The Crown's a great pub - good food and a great range of beers. Angie's very friendly and welcoming. It was a small company when I was there for the singaround, but fewer people means more turns! Not very far from the Crown is Red Rock Bridge, which crosses the Leeds-Liverpool canal. The miners' cottages in this picture were where my g-g-ggrandfather - a miner - lived in the 1840s. |
