Not for the faint hearted. Let's see... working up a sweat but without the clothes to mop it up, that should cause some steaming and odour. The raised arms for the arches will add to the olfactory punishment. Then there are the visuals; spare tyres continuing swinging after the dancer has stopped ("swing her by the middle" becomes "swing your own middle"), well-matured breasts (of both persuasions) wobbling unsupported, sweaty bare arms and bodies embracing for the basket or to promenade... And then the aural pleasures of all that uncontrolled slapping about, not to mention noises produced during the exertions by naked body parts which would normally be clothed.

And that would be just me!

One of Jelly Roll Morton's great piano pieces, learned he claims in interview with Alan Lomax, from Tony Jackson is called The Naked Dance.

The Naked Dance was done by prostitutes for the customers in the New Orleans brothels. The pianist would play and the naked girls would run up to the back of the small stage, kick the wall, turn and dance back up to the audience. Great days, eh?

The Naked Dance is very similar in melody and rhythm to Broonzy's Saturday Night Rub. Perhaps he heard it from someone of Jelly Roll's generation. More fun than a nude ceildh, I'll be bound - for the men...

An interesting piece - but I've heard from two sources (one of them FolkieDave) that in fact this is NOT the world's first nude ceilidh They tell me that there was certainly a naked ceilidh, if not the world's first, in Barnsley several years ago, at which the officiating band was the Rhythm Chaps. So it looks as though this is not a record breaker to use Roy Castle's terminology, and any claims that they organisers make to that effect are in vain (I hasten to add that I haven't been able to verify the facts as yet - anybody out there able to verify this???)

I can certainly verify them. The naturist ceilidh done by the Rhythm Chaps has happened at least once - probably twice and I am fairly sure Jim is correct it was Doncaster. The caller was Chris Sexton. And it was a few years ago.

(And if you do go to the Edinburgh event, a tip is to avoid the front row of the food at the buffet)

Come to think of it, The Sussex Pistols were booked to play a ceilidh for a naturist club in Surrey a couple of summers ago. It was cancelled at the last minute; the organisers must have got cold feet - or cold something or other.....

Hate to burst your bubble, but us yorkshire folk have been doing nude ceilidhs in Doncaster for donkeys years, I played squeezebox for a band last year in march, in sunny Donny. I can assure you the initial surprise quickly wears off and you realise these are genuine and friendly people, although Max our fiddle player had a roving mike and was in the thick of it! Just curious I suppose! I suspect nude ceilidhs have been going on for a very long time all over Britain, if they offer good money I'll gladly play for them again, but come on chaps, you,re really surprised are you?

Just as a footnote, many big supermarkets have regular nude shopping nights all over Britain,interesting that some kick you out for wearing jim jams, you have to be careful at bacon counter though! Oh I forgot to mention that the band don't have to play in the nude, you can get a nasty nip with a squeezebox, so they say!
