Subject: Lyr Add: VERY SQUARE DANCE (Steve Allen) From: Jim Dixon Date: 18 Sep 12 - 08:15 AM VERY SQUARE DANCE Steve Allen —Say, ever'body! —What's up, Steve? —It's time for a square dance, a very square dance! —Hooray! —All right, here we go! Chicken in the bread-pan, duck for the clam, Grab for the oyster; there we am. Ev'rybody swing that thing that— —Wait a minute! Hold it! Hold on there! —What's a matter? What we stoppin' fer? —Well, tell you the truth, I don't even know what we're singin' about. "Chicken in the bread-pan, duck for the clam"? Boy, I don't even know what those words mean. As a matter of fact, I think it's high time there were some new square-dance words, an' I brought some along, an' here we go! Rub your belly with linseed oil. Wrap your head in aluminum foil. Scratch your back where it may itch. Tune right in to Faye an' Skitch. Play gin rummy with fourteen decks, Punch an' Judy, Jinx an' Tex. Peas an' carrots, puddin' an' pie, I'll give you a punch in the eye. Blow your brains out; flip your lid. Oh, you crazy mixed-up kid! Now swing your Clyde, an' wash your face In a genuine styrene carryin' case. Turkey in a hay-loft, monkey in a tree, Possum up a hound-dog, chicken up a coon, Let's have lunch some afternoon. Ev'rybody jump an' rock an' roll. I wouldn't touch you with a ten-foot pole. Now Davy Crockett dreamed an' planned, An' he plays trombone with Basie's band. I said Davy Crockett from Tennessee, He's the greatest thing since Pinky Lee. At forty-five it may sound great, But spin this record at seventy-eight. Swimmin' in the water, flyin' in the air, I think this dance is pretty square. [Shave and a haircut] real square! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: A Very Square Dance (Steve Allen) From: GUEST,bruce trolli Date: 15 Mar 14 - 05:37 AM I once saw him sing a variation of this song during one of his shows where they had him making up song on-the-fly based on information from brief interviews of the studio audience. It went: "Chicken in the frying pan, cat in the oil Wrap your head in aluminum foil. If you don't know how to dance, Stick a barracuda down your pants." I laughed so hard I was choking! I taught my kids to sing it. Every once in a while it pops out of them and I start choking with laughter all over again. |
